LBD is correct that service dogs are easy to spot and their training makes them VERY well behaved. Emotional support animals are needed by some but the “need” for one has been so abused it’s a joke. That said, the rest of the dogs you see in stores are there simply because their owners DON’T CARE. They’re sure they and their dog’s are “special” and are above the law. These are the same people that let their dogs run loose on the beach.

Washington has made it astonishingly easy to vote.. they sent you a ballot.. in our case you make 3 choices and either drop it in a mailbox before last pickup today or take it to a ballot drop off.. i used the one at the library in Burien.

you would think this would be a no-brainer.. but as of this afternoon only 20% of Washingtonians had returned their ballot.

I was told by a supervisor that if a package is under 2 pounds and doesn’t fit in the mailbox, carriers are not required to deliver it to the porch. Carriers have the option to leave a notice for you to pick up.

If your driveway is ‘steep’, it might be considered unwalkable. There is no usps standard on that and it is up to the carrier(I was told by management). Would it be better if the carrier left you a notice to pick it up at the post office? (If so, I would suggest taping a note to the mailbox…where the carrier will see it…on the lid, perhaps?) If you want to talk to usps management, leave them your phone number and ask to be called by the end of the day, or ask for a phone number when you are told no one is ‘available’ and ask a good time to call.) Hope this was helpful. I also think the idea in the previous post about taping a note with an arrow for package deliveries isn’t a bad idea…but the ‘porch pirates can read too and seem more than willing to enter property to check things out.

I know it doesn’t help but it could be a lot worse. Amazon’s outsourcing of deliveries have an infinitely worse track record. Think Uber for mail. It’s horrible. While getting your packages at the street is indeed messed up (package theft opportunity anyone?) at least they are getting it to your house. I’ve had three packages (1 which was over $2K in computer equipment) delivered to an unreasonably different address across the street and down TWO BLOCKS!

For the most part, USPS has been a great, reliable, trustworthy service and I’m glad we have it. Sucks you’ve had some friction with them though. :( Might I suggest taping a post-it note to the front of your mailbox stating “Package deliveries ^” (pointing towards your front door)? I don’t know if it would help or be considered rude by the postal delivery folk or whatnot but just an idea.

Last Saturday while walking on Alki, I tripped on a high edge of the sidewalk and went down hard! My left shoulder hit as well as my right knee and right elbow. The intense pain, fear and humility was overwhelming and I burst into tears. My Phone was in pieces(cover came off).
Along came two strangers, I believe Fran and Brad-hope I got the names right! They were so kind and tried to help me up but the pain in my left shoulder prevented me from doing anything but laying still. They offered encouragement and Fran reassembled my phone so I could call for my Husband. They were exactly who I needed at that time-I felt so alone!
I asked my two new friends to bow down so I could see their faces as all I could see at the time were their legs and shoes! As they did, I felt so touched to put faces to the kindness they gave me. Fran said “I know you! You’ve walked here years ago! I saw the man who revived you!” She was referring to the time and near the same place I fell down from a heart attack five years ago! I was without a heartbeat and survived! All my angels were in place to administer CPR, defibrillator and summon an ambulance that was just blocks away.
My husband finally arrived and called for an aid car. Fran and Brad wished me the best and left as the aid car arrived and EMT’s were gathering around to do the wonderful things they do for us. I was soon at Harborview ER and discovered I had fractured my left humerus bone. Fortunately, I didn’t need a cast but a specially knotted sling that enabled the bone to start healing. Painful week since then but my heart was warmed by the memories of my two friends and all the people driving along Alki who stopped to offer assistance!
I wish I knew more of what happened five years ago as I don’t remember anything after I passed out. Last Saturday showed me there are still angels out there among us. THANK YOU!

    Hello everyone
Now, I’m not bashing the USPS – I realize they have their jobs to do, and in weather, it can be difficult. Does anyone know what their rule is regarding placement of packages that they deliver? I was always under the impression that if they deliver a package to you that doesn’t fit in your mailbox, they are to place it at your front door if it is accessible. We live on a street with no sidewalk or parking, and have a locking mailbox at the bottom of our driveway. Our driveway is steep but easily accessible. Today, for the second time in a few weeks, I’ve found our packages just laying streetside at the foot of our mailbox. I doubt this is our usual carrier, as he’s always delivered them at the top of the driveway. Last year when this happened, I went to the Post Office to complain, but was told that the supervisor was (conveniently) unavailable. Can someone explain what it is our carriers should be doing in this situation? I’ve never been able to locate a phone number for our local West Seattle Post Office, and the one time I made an on-line complaint, it went completely unanswered…I shudder to think of the upcoming holiday season….
    Thanks.

I hadn’t seen this thread before. So…I am a girl (woman) born before 1950. All the way back to ancient times in 1947 That makes me “vintage” now. In the early 70’s I enlisted in the Women’s Army Corp, where women got to shoot weapons, became mechanics working on vehicles in the motor pool, and driving said vehicles, too. So what’s the crap about having to be born in the 70’s, yada yada. Women may not have flown many planes way back then (damn, I feel ancient….oh, wait…), but women did a lot of stuff that you probably don’t realize. It had to start somewhere. And , as far as flying planes, and doing what men do, now…well, that changes and gets better every day. It might be 2 steps forward, one back, under the current administration, but, progress has been made. Things are far from perfect…we definitely are considered 2nd class by many in this country, but we persist…and resist…and hopefully the new generation coming up will follow in the footsteps of women like Harriet Quimby, got her pilot’s license in 1911, or Matilde Moisant, who got her license 13 days later. Military? No. But they could fly. Or consider Bessie Coleman, the first black aviatrix, who got her international pilot’s license in 1921. What an accomplishment. I don’t think Boeing is disrespecting women on that billboard. Yes, we’ve come a long way, and still have a ways to go. But give Boeing a break.

    PNelson…thanks for your post.

I’m confused too. From what I’ve read no where on the billboard is the word “cougar” so I’M guessING that the OP is assuming because one of the women is from the 50’s which would make her 68+ in age so she’s a cougar in “her” mind???.
Anyways isn’t the definition of a “cougar” an older female that goes after a younger male…is there a young male on the billboard getting his butt pinched or something? LOL!!!

I pass this billboard on my way home from work. It consists of two pictures side by side. On the left is an attractive older woman with a sassy expression making “cat claws” with her hands. On the right is a fifties era fighter jet, presumably one on display at the Museum of Flight. Underneath are two captions: “Born in the fifties” & “Flew in the fifties”. Y’all are the ones who labeled her a “cougar”

I see nothing in this ad that should be offensive to women in general or this woman in particular. What I find offensive is not identifying the aircraft. I’m guessing it’s a Convair F-102 Delta Dagger.
