jon: i give it like i get it. if i saw you in public making exaggerated claims about taxation without representation, i probably would engage you in polite conversation… unless you were yelling and waving a gun around (which is how i picture betty453.)

by the way, PC is another way of saying polite. so, yes, i was raised to be polite, but not to suffer bullies.

as far as my anonymity goes, the internet is a big place, and it’s chock full o’nuts. i have met other forum posters, and i’m pretty sure they would tell you that i’m a nice guy. but i am an introvert, by default. i’m not on social media of any kind because i don’t like complete strangers knowing my business, for one thing. for another, i keep in touch with family just fine without facebook.

why do you care who i am, anyway? let’s discuss ideas, not each other.

    so, back to the ideas:

yes, i know you don’t get magical cash when your home’s value increases. but i think for most (obviously not all) homeowners in seattle, the booming economy and increasing business revenue have also increased wages and hours worked. i’m a union hod carrier, and i’m currently having my most productive year since i started doing this 25 years ago. i’m not struggling with taxes. bills to corporations are far worse.

i can’t speak for those on fixed incomes.

I read through much of the ordinance and see some tremendous opportunities for attorneys to make lots of money off tax payers through arguing the many subjective statements in the document. Considering how many lawyers work in Seattle, I can see why the homeless are being lured here with freebies and used as political pawns to fleece tax payers.

Largely, this proposal is a joke because urban campers will simply move their tents around faster than the City can legally act.

We already have laws that forbid urban “homesteading”. I think the idea of urban homesteading on public land is in direct opposition of private property rights since this legislation builds towards creating a protected class that can sue with impunity for stuff they never had exclusive rights to.

Perhaps the city can lease some of the vast open stretches of port property and let private non-profits manage urban camp sites–where individuals are assigned a specific space at a nominal cost. Urban camping rules, of course, to include no drugs, no alcohol, no crap piles, etc. –Violators get immediately evicted just like any camp ground around the state.

Lets just enforce the law and empower some private non-profits with designated space not currently used or enjoyed by the public.

In almost 10 years of covering outages here, I’ve never heard of any such thing … unless it’s on a person-to-person arrangement. You might try asking, at least re: the former, if the folks at Nurturing Expressions (WSB sponsor) in The Junction have any idea about that. Your better bet might be having a cooler case with ice ready on standby in case there’s an outage that lasts more than a few hours. Good luck, as a long-ago nursing/pumping mom, I know how irreplaceable the former is! – TR

    Wow.. What a compassionate group.
Personal attacks and of course the Elitist Liberals making Fun Of CapITaliZatiOn. and speel’in. But, of course anyone that might have a problem with ” Letters n Such ” are more than likely a product of our FAILED edumica-shun system.
The same EdumiKation system that Liberals oppose any change too for any reason. No performance requirements , No reviews, No new procedures or overhaul of any sort just more money that’s it. After all the U.S taxpayer is getting a Fantastic return on our investment by spending the most in the world per Student and getting what… ? The 22nd best Education ?
Only in Liberal-ville with the use of Liberal Math can you pay the MOST -per- student in the World and get the 22nd best in performance and somehow that is a ” Great ” return on Investment. Brilliant !
The Liberal solution to everything is simply MORE money. That is it ! But, in the real world where there is thing called ” Accountability ” you simply can’t do a crappy job on something and turn and look at you Boss ,Investor, Banker or Customer and say …” Sure we did a crappy job but if you lend, allocate or pay us more money we will do a better job. Well maybe if it works out that way”.
It comes down to the fact that Liberals are a group of Elitists that know how our society should be run and anyone that argues against there Ideology, questions there decisions or demands for more money are just unenlightened, uneducated Haters & Racists that need to be ignored or pushed out of the way ” for the good of the collective” To use a Hugo Chavez-ism.
It is a bit funny how we don’t hear much praise of Venezuela like we used too ? Kshama Sawant’s philosophy is right in line with Chavez so I’m wondering why we don’t hear the praise that we used to hear about O’l Hugo ? After his leftist policies that were praised by Sean Penn and many others. Who needs food to eat anyway ?

Lots of Kool Aid from both sides here. Mark me disgusted and resigned demo party a few years ago. Did not and will not join the GOP due to glassy eyed social issue right wing nuts that poison the brand. “Those who take extreme positions in American politics are always wrong” ~~~~ President Dwight Eisenhower.

That said, the Dem nominee did in fact sign two very restrictive non disclosure agreements on January 22, 2009. One is for Top Secret materials, the other is for Sensitive/Compartmentalized Information. Both affirm and acknowledge receipt of training and indoctrination in secure transmission, handing and retention of data. Both indicate there is no reservation or deceit on the part of the employee signing off.

The documents are on the State Department’s webpage the Judge in the Judicial Watch law suit forced state to create and populate with records. For your review I will attempt to post a link to the pdf of one of them. From there, it should be easy to dig up whatever else you want. All federal court records are kept on a site called “Pacer”. The cases are in the DC District. Your first 1500 pages are free.

Make up your own mind about whether it was allowed to set up a private server as one signed the non disclosure agreements. Also note there are emails that are still so sensitive the court would not order them published. There are things that are “born classified”. Here’s your link. I hope this works:

    chrome-extension://oemmndcbldboiebfnladdacbdfmadadm/http://freebeacon.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/HRC-SCI-NDA1.pdf

Happy reading. The image is not clear, probably by design, enlarge it and you’re in business.

I personally don’t think there is any defense for transmission or retention on an unofficial server. Your mileage may vary.

As a daily bike commuter from Admiral area to South Park along Harbor Ave and W. Marginal Way I have seen a HUGE increase in vehicles from cars to RV’s that are obviously lived-in, as well as those who camp in the thickets that border those miles of roads.

Additionally, the amount of ‘stuff’ has grown too! Lots and lots of garbage, cloths, household items, and who knows what else has began piling-up.

I can only imagine what it must be like to live out there under normal circumstances before adding all this wind, rain and run-off to the mix.

” reducing speed limits from 35 MPH to 25 MPH is an environmental problem”

i would have to do the math on that one since fuel consumption is often dependant upon speed..
and in our family’s case in whether the person driving is the slow and steady turtle wins the race style or the hurry up and wait style…
depending on who is driving our car averages a 3 to 5 mpg difference in mileage… even when average miles per hour remains consistent.

but i am pretty sure that human beings are far more likely to survive an unintended interaction with an automobile (getting hit by one) if that car is going 25 not 35.

i am positive there is substantial data on that one.

also.. i am not gay.. but the notion that gays or gay gatherings don’t support the economy of this city is absurd.

I live across the street from one of the groups of people who build floats for gay pride and have witnessed first hand the dollars and time that are spent producing those floats.. not to mention the food and drink consumed before, during and after the event. Every one of those dollars are spent in our local economy.

You choose Seafair? I find the float builders across the street more entertaining than the pirates.. which is why this city supports so many different events .. something for everyone.

Redblack, Thank you for your learned comments. Of course we cannot commend you personally because you are anonymous. I do not think you would speak to me in person with the same tone as you have written. You are probably to PC to do so.

Redblack and Skeeter fail to realize that increased value of property does not mean increased revenue to the property owner unless they sell the property. 13.5 % increase in 2016 coupled with an expected 20 % increase in 2017 can be very hard for anyone to budget working for wages or on a fixed income. People will be priced out of their homes. Some will end up on the street under I-5 in the jungle.

JanS, Blog or rant; I do not know. I was just trying to have a discussion about what I see as our cost of living getting out of control and local government wasting funds involved in projects where basically we are throwing good money to bad investments. Mean while we are ignoring our roads, education, creating traffic nightmares, harboring criminals while telling the police that they are cruel.

Joanne Brayden, Thank you for using your real name and understanding that landlords need to recover costs. Most renters think they do not have to pay when they vote for another initiative to be paid for by property taxes. You have the picture.

dhg, I have worked around gay people all my life. I have no problem. I just do not care to have their life philosophy thrown in our face daily by a mayor who is fully concentrating on that segment of life and ignoring other more important problems. Do not tell us that the emphasis on the Gay community by the City of Seattle has cost nothing. Seafair is a big money maker for the city.

To all: The best fuel economy from today’s cars is at 40-45 miles per hour. Installing Bus Bulbs, going from 4 lanes to two, reducing speed limits from 35 MPH to 25 MPH is an environmental problem. In addition, if one expands the Lead Time between two points, one expands the Work in Progress. Meaning the longer it takes to get from A to B the more cars will be on the road at any given point in time. So we are polluting the air and we creating traffic nightmares and destroying commerce.

I’ve noticed a sharp increase in the presence of tents, cars, and RVs collecting under the east side of the WS Bridge near Spokane st. There have always been a few tents or RVs there since I started commuting from WS to SODO in 2013, but the growth of temporary dwellings appears to have spiked. Is this partially a result of evictions from “The Jungle” in recent weeks?

JoB, for those of us of a certain age, struggling to find words is an inconvenient truth not necessarily indicative of a cognitive disorder. ;-) Certainly your own writing is notable for being clear and nuanced. Of course, there are times where use of an emoticon to convey satire or irony might help some readers to avoid making incorrect assumptions about your intent.

Otherwise, I think style is a significant part of content. But I would agree that making assumptions about what informs a particular style is precarious. For instance there are some mental health issues that show up in irregular capitalization yet it would be wrong and unwise to assume everyone using idiosyncratic capitalization is deranged.

The biggest difficulty I have with the irregular caps issues is I assume the writer intends to be provocative or annoying even though I may not have sufficient evidence to support that opinion. It’s a knee jerk reaction on my part. So I try to catch myself and try to figure out what they mean or intend—-are the caps for the reader or the writer; do they convey emphasis, anger, contempt, satire; just what do you really mean? In any case, it’s safer to assume they don’t have a better way to express themselves.

captainDave, Of course the woman had no way of knowing your motivations for supporting Trump.

She may have assumed you were in favor of having a President who thinks he can run the country like a dictator, replacing generals at the Pentagon, using the Justice Department to go after political opponents, etc.

Or perhaps she is sufficiently informed about economic matters to understand the consequences of the President just threatening to short pay US Treasury bonds, undermining the status of the US Dollar as the reserve currency of the world.

We here at the Forum know you are far too thoughtful than to support Trump for those reasons.

JoB: I think a lot of people are afraid to speak their minds about real issues since most of the “prominent voices” in Seattle are far left of center.

I had a women the other day go absolutely nuts when she saw a “Trump” bumper sticker laying on the dash of my truck. She followed me for two blocks honking and screaming obscenities over nothing more than her assumptions that I am a stupid, racist, bigoted, womanizing redneck that had no business being in West Seattle.

She has no idea that I simply prefer to keep a constitutional Supreme Court rather than a transition to a subservient liberal court that serves Hillary Clinton’s specific agenda. The woman has no clue how sick I am of the government corruption and regulatory repression that has crippled businesses like mine all over the country. She didn’t stop for a moment to consider that I had family and friends directly affected by terrorist attacks from people that should have never been in this country.

There is a prevailing attitude here in Seattle that extinguishes the possibility of reasonable, balanced discussion about important issues that will effect our future–So we are left with bantering about boring triviality. The important issues will come to pass without discussion and we will all pay the consequences for the dominance of emotion over reason.

I hate to be a killjoy in the midst of all this “reasonableness” .. but Seattle has just been issued a high wind alert for the latter part of this week. While you are presumably safe and warm in your homes, Seattle’s homeless will be on the streets or in the woods during this event.

Yes Michael Waldo.. studies have been done. In my opinion, Seattle’s homeless population is one of the most studied in the nation, but you don’t hear much about the results of those studies because they don’t fit the public perception of Seattle’s homeless.. people from somewhere else who prefer to be homeless and came to Seattle for our “great” services.

What they show is a rising population of single displaced women (often homeless as a result of domestic violence), single displaced elderly whose limited incomes can no longer cover Seattle’s rising rents, displaced families whose working adults can’t cover Seattle’s rising rents, disabled people who are in the process of applying for Social Security Disability with legitimate health claims (some for as long as 9 years) but whose benefits when they are granted won’t cover housing costs and last but not least our community’s mentally ill (many of whom are addicted to both legal and illegal substances).

Our supplemental housing lists are so large they are run by lottery and if you are lucky enough to be granted a voucher you might not be able to find housing before it expires.

    That’s the reality.

Yes Waynster. tiny houses would be a better idea and in many cases would actually benefit homeowners. I can tell you from personal experience that the homeless i have had helping me with my gardens have been invaluable to me. If i wasn’t a renter i would be parking an RV in the back yard. It breaks my heart to have them come work with me during the day, to feed them and befriend them and then send them back to a tent on the hillside where they are subject to being run off on a regular basis.

Andasai.. you want 6 months for further study. No big deal, right? Except.. those 6 months include another winter with more homeless deaths due to hypothermia and weather related illnesses.

Seattle instituted a 10 year plan.. with an incredible amount of study. After 10 years, that group concluded that the solution was housing. The Mayor didn’t like their plan and commissioned yet another study which was followed by another. Again, the solution is housing. Yet, you think putting our homeless population at risk for another 6 months for yet another study is the answer?
    Not likely.

The only logical result of postponing this plan, which would designate specific areas as possible temporary shelters with services is to gain time to keep them out of your neighborhood.

All if can say is look around. They are already here (hiding in plain sight) and their numbers are increasing.

We need immediate solutions that address the core problems.. not endless studies with little or no real action.
