I first moved down to the Emerald City in 1996 from Alaska to go to AIS for Computer Animation. After having lived in “almost” every neighborhood in the metro area of Seattle (Belltown, Waterfront, lower and upper Queen Anne, First Hill, Capitol Hill, Northgate, the U District, and some east-side neighborhoods as well) I signed up for a 6 month lease in 2002 for a mother-in-law style bottom floor “apartment” in the Admiral Junction. I thought it was too far from everything and I’d leave after the 6 month lease. That 6 months quickly turned into TEN YEARS before my landlord passed away and we had to move down to Alki. My girlfriend, our dogs and I loved living off Alki for a good 3 & 1/2 years before a private firm in Eastlake bought the property from the original owners and tried to jack our rent from $1,500/month to $2,150/month. After a rather absurd back & forth we ended up staying for 6 more months at $1,750/month while looking for a new place here in WS.

Lucky us, we found a perfect spot just off Delridge, a few blocks from Westwood Village that was great for us! So great, we ended up buying it from our once landlords (now friends). We’ve loved this neighborhood and almost everyone in it (specifically our direct neighbors! Not so much the fireworks jerks but hey, what can ya do?) for the past 4 years and it’s going to be really hard not running down to the local grocery and saying “HI!” to Sam, Heather, Che, and everyone else at a moment’s notice. I’m going to miss the cherry blossoms and the sounds of cheers coming from games going on at Chief Sealth. I’m going to miss having out of state family & friends visit and taking them on the scenic beach drive out to Salty’s for the best brunch in the region! I’m going to miss the amazing fresh seafood and the incredibly talented & creative people preparing/serving it.

Most of all, I’m going to miss the West Seattle “vibe”. I knew within a month of moving into a cramped 6′ ceiling basement apartment that this was the best area I had ever lived. That was as a younger, single guy though. Now my family’s needs have changed and we need to focus on better career options and lower cost of living so we are moving to Austin, TX. A place where we can get our daughter into preschool without a multi-year wait, exorbitant price, or both. Also a place we can get a 4 bed, 3 bath, 2 car garage “house” for less than we still owe on our 2 bed 1&1/2 bath townhouse. Also a place where the best school in the region is only $6K/ semester for residents compared to UW. I’ve been in tech for over 20 years in increasingly more lucrative roles and there is sadly, simply no way I can afford to give the quality of life and education to my wife and daughter that they deserve while staying here.

I’m sure I’ll keep checking in to see what going on “back home” and I really hope we can move back in 5-6 years after degrees have been earned and my daughter has been acclimated to schools and such but no matter what, West Seattle will always be “Best Seattle” to me.

Again, a fond farewell to all of you, my soon to be former neighbors and I wish you nothing but the best going forward.

You don’t own the meter, SCL does. It’s within their purview to replace/upgrade it to meet their needs.

Prior to the smart meter SCL did a lot of estimated billing based on prior use. With the advent of the smart meter your billing will be more accurate and, perhaps, eye opening.

As to the radiation claims: unless you’re carrying the smart meter in your pocket, just like your mobile phone, you won’t need to worry about it. As noted above, we are bombarded by all sorts of electromagnetic radiation from visible/non-visible light, cell phones, wifi, x-rays…and the list goes on. Enjoy!

You know I get a headache every time I call Seattle City Light and ask when will I be able to view my electric usage on-line. Got my meter.
    They promised last year.
    Every time just another excuse.

Anyone else concerned about Seattle City Light’s ‘smart’ meters and the increase in radiation they expose us to? And the medical problems some people are reporting since analog meters began being replaced with smart meters? SCL is currently replacing analog meters with smart meters in West Seattle. I’m amazed no one here seems to be talking about the increased health risks documented in numerous sources, including the award winning documentary ‘Take Back Your Power’… We attempted to opt out of our meter ‘upgrade’, and were told that because we have solar panels we are ineligible! This is really concerning considering the ‘upgrade’ is only a change that benefits SCL and in no way benefits our family. We’ve been challenging SCL to allow us to opt out without having to disconnect our solar panels, but without much success. Even though we are technically still in the process of trying to opt out and our account is noted as such, I arrived home yesterday to find an SCL employee attempting to install a smart meter. When I called to speak with SCL today, they confirmed there was a note on our account that we were opting out, and they had no explanation as to why an SCL employee would not have known this. Wondering if anyone here in the community is interested in having a conversation about this to increase our collective power.

Your focused on my responsibility to move the bike or notify someone or read a disclaimer…
    Your missing the point.
The owner has exclusive responsibility to maintain the bike and should know the status of the bike at all times. Such as battery charge and periodic maintenance history. This is not “fly by wire technology” Jump on a bike and the battery is almost dead. Someone could get hurt.

Jump needs to clean up their act.

Per the rules here, on the R&Rs, you must contact the business before you can rant about them. It’s states in the rules pretty clearly. If you contacted the business then you could get all of your questions answered. You can reach them on their website, Jump.com, and there’s even a phone number for them.

It’s pretty crappy to just leave it where it was if you were able to move it. Your demand that you should be compensated is ridiculous. It says far more about you than it does about the company.

    Elma and Jo B,
    How about a compromise?
Let’s ask NWAAF for the the more “risque/rude” merchandise to be displayed in a certain corner of the store, with appropriate signs displayed? Whaddya say? Seems like a win-win for all? And no local business loses any customers.

Hello, in my 20 years of house/pet sitting I have only done over night. As stated before, I have plenty of experience with birds and every creature from fish to horses. Currently the two Yorkies we have are rescues, also the other 24 we have owned over 30 years. Rescues are unique with each one having different issues and special needs due to the unpleasant life they were raised and exposed to. It’s a package deal and there is always unexpected behavior challenges, one must know and be prepared when making the decision to bring home a rescue. Patience and acceptance are a must bringing a rescue to your home. We have had the most joy and happiness watching them change when they finally believe they are safe and this is home, where there is no shortage of love from my roommate and me. They are worth the extra effort and care, and deserve to have a ‘normal dog’ life. Please ask any questions you may need answered
Thank you, I hope to hear from you, Dusk

Hello all. Thank you kindly for your interest and response. We are still actively looking and all of your profiles are amazing. Because our zoo is slightly complex with birds, a cat, and a rescue dog, we are looking for someone that is willing and able to stay in our home and on overnights. If that is still a fit, please let me know

Stores can only stay in business if they have thing’s people want to buy. Nobody is forced to buy anything. If there’s something in a store you don’t agree with don’t buy it. If something isn’t selling it won’t stay stocked for long. If you want to express outrage go after the customer’s that are buying.

I agree Elma – my daughters love going there but it’s a little tough to explain all the “humorous” items. It doesn’t really fit in with what we’re trying to teach them about being respectful. But – it’s obviously just my version of respect! Definitely doesn’t reflect current society. I think I’m getting really old. Or super outdated!

    Pangolini Pie..
i have watched the video and i read the comments above..
the shelters they described do not exist in Seattle.
if we want to get the homeless off our streets there is an economical solution that works
give them the kind of shelter where they can begin to rebuild their lives.

what we do now is chase them out of the camps they create for stability and put them back on the merry go round of looking for another place to camp or a shelter they are locked out of during the day.. without providing the time and space for them to even clean themselves to go job hunting.,., hauling all of their belongings with them.

it’ a lose lose scenario.. for which we currently blame and incarcerate them.

I find that merchandise humorous and one of the unique qualities of NW Art & Frame. NWAF is my go to for little gifts, which includes some of the more spicier items. I’ve lived here for over 25 years – and they have always had these cute gifts. If you find it offensive, then dont buy it or look at it! Dont be sad! It’s just not your thing, and that’s ok.
