I take the grandson to the bus in the mornings so I get to “interact” with those who walk to school or to bus stops.

After several close calls, I started to wonder what goes through the minds of those who buy their kids urban camouflage. Is it fashion alone? Is it cheap? Are their parents trying to collect on the life insurance?

I can tell you that it is not wise since some kids seem to be unable to cross at corners or crosswalks and those with hoods and ear-buds apparently feel looking either way when crossing the street in mid block is unnecessary.

If your children or grandchildren insist on camo, at least try to find the type that has some of the neon colors or contrast. The current white and gray camo, worn on misty or foggy mornings by those who have never seen a car pedestrian accident, is just asking for trouble.

JoB, I was just thinking about you and your dogs. I’m glad you are having success with packworks. Were you comfortable with their treatment of your dogs?

But I might add it is all in the past (thank god!), we have nothing to do with anyone from that school as if it matters since none of our kids ever had a playdate with any kids from that school and now our kids friends come to our house all the time. What bothered my husband and I more was the parents (other Moms who should have known better!) to keep telling me that our daughter is huge. I wanted to yell well hey maybe if you fed your kid your kid would grown too. Yes I can still get ralled up about it as I am now but hey we moved to an excellent school with an outstanding principal, wonderful teachers and very caring staff and it has been so positive that it really make the other school a very small shadow in our lives experiences.

But what I still don’t understand and probably never will is what gave the other parents the right to keep telling me our daugter is huge (by the way none of our kids are overweight), and when I told them no they would argue with me and say yes she is? I don’t get why they thought it was their duty or their right to tell me this or to argue with me. If all this hadn’t happened at a school I would have gladly told this busybody Moms to go $%^& %^&!!

It was a horrible school! None of our kids were happy there, my husband and I were miserable there too and truly hated going to any of the school functions but we did to support our kids. Having to deal with all those snobby parents, a principal who ruled the school like hitler and every morning and afternoon having people make comments about our daughter’s height and not know which parent would speak to me on any given day was quite enough for us all. Our kids have all done well since the move and have been able to make friends.

I see the same beauty you do. I am in awe that our systems work as well as they do. I just see how that came to be, differently. I believe we are in a constant state of change. An evolutionary trial and error. I don’t see the state we are in now, as proof of creation or intelligent design. We seem so magnificent in comparison to what? At the present time we’re not privy to alternative systems that might make what we have look like child’s play.

If I had never seen or heard of a car or computer, I would not comprehend how they came to be. The intricacies under the hood are just as mysterious and beautiful to me in how they work. And as much as I marvel at them and see them as complete in their design and function, I know a better model will eventually exist.

We are afraid to question the design quality of living things. We’re taught not to. Yet if we did, we’d see all kinds of flaws that could use improving. For example….when a rabbit doesn’t absorb all the nutrients in his food, it is diverted for further fermentation. He then excretes this in the usual manner and eats it again. This time absorbing the rest of the nutrients. This is effective, but is it really optimal to eat your own —-?

Living things are amazing. That in and of itself does not suggest creation over evolution.

Evolution is observable. That fact can’t be negated. Faith is the belief in what you want to be true, and all that includes. Nothing wrong with having some of that. But I agree, it doesn’t belong in the science classroom.

Nicely put Karen and easy enough to do, but after the comments keep coming one right after the other it gets really old having to ignore people’s comments. Especially when they are commenting on a childs heights, weight, etc… After me telling people at her former school that she isn’t “huge”, or “large” we gave up since those people were choosing to remain insensitive slobs. Parents would come right up to me and say Oh she is so huge or large, and I would answer No, she isn’t large or huge she may be abit taller than your kid but she isn’t large or huge, then that well-meaning parent would say No she is large or huge. I wanted to yell to the top of my lungs No she isn’t large or huge, your kid is short but you know I was raised to use my good manners and I would never say what I truly wanted to say. Now we are at a different and much better school (no we didn’t move because of these comments, just a better educational experience for our kids) and since Septemeber we have never heard one word that our kids, especially our daughter is large or huge. The parents at the new school have manners and use them. The other school was so chocked full of snobby parents it was shocking!

So all that said I still believe people should just shut their mouths and stop making any comments that are unkind to anybody.

How about bad hair? Or awful clothes choices? Or a car that pollutes the environment? Or a messy house? Or non-organic produce? Or reading those smutty romance novels? Or the way you choose to speak to your child? Or your spouse?

Anything you comment upon can be taken as a criticism. There are some things that we can not change or do anything about and when we judge someone – over anything – we do so without knowledge of that person’s circumstance.

My hair looks bad – I just had a bad haircut and am waiting for it to grow out.

My clothes are poorly suited to me – I have no budget for new clothes, or no one has taught me how to do that “put together” thing.

My car is a 4X4 gas guzzler – I need it because I do a lot of off road driving for work.

    See my point?

In some ways it is up to us to not take things so personally. When someone comments upon your height (or your daughter’s), instead of getting angry you can point out how well clothes look on tall people – as an example.

Weight is a touchy issue in our society but judgements of any type can hurt, so we need to be mindful of other’s feelings.

On the other hand, we need to not take things so personally or we will become a society that is afraid to talk to each other for fear of offending someone.

I like to think that believing in God as Creator and believing in the science of evolution are not mutually exclusive. Couldn’t God the Creator be creative in going about the act of creation? Who am I to suggest that there is only one way or only one date or number of days that our universe came into being. Would my concept of 24 hours in a day naturally be God’s concept as well? Rather godlike of me to think so, don’t you think? I look around me and have no doubt that a loving Creator God designed and blew life into our amazing and ever changing world/universe. I believe this down deep in my core in my soul. I guess this belief is called faith.

Actually.. nearly all garage door openers are on the web. Some of the older ones are indeed set by a switch combination. It is usually hidden but it is solid state and usually uses a DIP (dual inline package) switch that may set the combination OR set the type of signal or remote it will respond to.

Google the brand name and model number to see if you can find the installation or users manual.

I hate to see people call out an expensive tech for something they could get from a manual.

However, some brands are favored by installers because the details of how they work or are set, are not published. This creates work opportunity for the installer company.

I think Camp Long would be a great place for a reception. It is $40 an hour (I think??) and has a kitchen and you can get a liquor license for a fee.

The West Seattle Golf Course is also somewhere to check out.

people really get touchy with the religion thing, whether you label yourself “christian” or not. Ken, one can’t have a discussion about evolution, I don’t think, without a little religion creeping in. It’s bound to happen.

To those who went off the path a little…we all must be a little more tolerant. I respect everyone’s right to believe what they want to believe. What I don’t appreciate is for people to assume that I don’t have my own personal beliefs, that they HAVE to tell me about theirs, and how much better off I’d be if I felt the same. That’s hogwash…I’m not you…and you’re not me. I would never, ever tell you that you’d be better off believing how I believe, because it’s personal to me, it has nothing to do with you.

I once had a close friend sit in my home and tell me that if I wasn’t “born again” I was going straight to hell. She was never invited back to my home again, because I found it so offensive. She had no idea what was or what wasn’t in my heart, just that I didn’t wear it on my sleeve as she did. Respect? She certainly had none for me.

Now…back to topic at hand…evolution. So many things have evolved…where was the beginning? Who knows. Who created the original? Who knows. Big Bang? Maybe? God (or whatever you call a higher being in your life)? Perhaps. I studied the body, it’s systems, it’s intricacies, the way things work amazingly together, when I was in massage school. Now, there’s something that can’t be just random, it’s so beautiful how it all goes together.Yes…evolution…we are not as we once were. But, hey…ya gotta wonder where the plan came from……ok, those are just random thoughts :)

Hey m, I was in the women’s gym at All-Star last night. There is a sign that says “Rerack your weights after use.” Actually, I didn’t see anything out of place. I’ve only gone there twice now (just this week, as a guest, as I’m checking out local gyms) and so far I like it. I am going to try a spinning class next — looks like the Friday evening spins are wide open for more participants! : ) How long ago were you a member there?

I think this all depends on how many guests and food… your style. It’s tough having a wedding in winter only because it’s so cold. Just means you may be spending a little more. Wedding and reception in same place? that’s another thing to consider.

If you have a good friend with a cool house, that can be wonderful. Camp Long has a facility. Old Lodge kinda place. The YMCA?? What about the church. Do they have a reception area? They sometimes give a discount if using the church and reception area, also if there is a wedding there the same day, you might be able to share decorations.

Congratulations, may love shine on you always.

    Dear Katydid:

Assuming you have new batteries in the one that doesn’t work (I know, but I had to say it), open the cover of the one that does work. Each of those little white switches and the three (i think) positions together form a code. Get a piece of paper and mark down the switch positions of the controller that does work. Close it back up.

Open the one that doesn’t work. Are the switches in the same position as the one that works? If so, you need a new controller. Note the brand and type of opener and you might be able to buy a replacement controller.

If the switches are in different positions, set them the same as the controller that works. Reset the cover and try it.

    Good Luck – JD

    WSMom,

The folks that are the P-Patch people, can help.

Apparently they can look into different “groups” ie. church, owner of property if it’s on their property, or maybe even the school. Any way, we would first contact the P-Patch people and see about he lot. There is no such thing as too many gardens, in my opinion.

“Prayingman’s comments are exactly why it’s frustrating and futile to discuss religion.”

It’s only futile because you make it so. You’re the one who is closing off to it, not I. Where I’d like to find common ground with you, you’re opposed to it for only reasons you know.

“The friendly I’m just stating my opinion routine is a fallacy. There is no mutual respect for my choices.”

There’s mutual respect, certainly. Does it mean you’re right for it? Nope. Does it mean I’m going to hold you to the fire for it? Nope! You know, JT, there used to be rumors of molestors who wanted the right to be able to love young male kids. Let me guess, you respect them and their right to want to do so, right?

“In the end, you still turn your “opinions” into a sermon and an attempt to recruit. You still choose to not accept my beliefs by stating you know god works through EVERYONE. Really? That insults me. Keep your god to yourself or to those that ask. It’s not like there is a living, breathing person that hasn’t been made aware of religion.”

You mean like the sermon you responded with? Again, I will voice my opinions as much as you or anyone else will. Accept your beliefs? What might those be exactly, JT? I’m listening. And if you don’t believe in *my* God, that’s for you to deal with, but don’t be so insulted by somehting / someone that doesn’t exist. Welcome to the real world, JT. Intolerance hurts, doesn’t it? And, if you don’t want to hear about it, don’t bring it up or give me reason to post specifically about religion or God. Think about it the next time you say His name in vein. Like it or not, I bet you say it, don’t you? Just remember, that saying is in reference to God.

“People like to use the line “you’re just anti-christian” to excuse their constantly bad behavior.”

JT – I feel for you, if that’s what you got from my other post. Do yourself a favor and read it over, so that you can see you’ve got me pegged totally wrong. But if you insist, go on, tell me my constant bad behavior. Jaded, jaded, jaded, are you, JT.

“It’s rude to try and sell something to those who aren’t interested in buying. I can’t believe how many times a discussion has turned into someone listing bible verses on how to get saved.”

You’re 100% right. It’s just as rude for others to respond the way they do. How about something along the lines of what Jan might say? She differs in her views but at least has the decency to be polite and cordial about it. Give a punch, take a punch!

“Would it be ok to turn every new sponsor thread into a personal pitch for Amway and Mary Kay? I’m really surprised this is such a hard concept to comprehend.”

Keep trying JT, you’ll get it. No, it wouldn’t ok.

“Sorry Ken. Can I start a new thread for you to get back on topic? “

And next, you’ll want to preface it with, “Christians Not Welcome”. Again, if you want to stay on topic, at least be cordial about it. Just don’t expect for me to be quiet when you open up this topic. Read my posts, JT and Ken, and you’ll see that I’m as interested in our community and what’s going on as much as anyone else. Not everything has to be about religion or God for many reasons, but mainly out of RESPECT for others views.

Sorry, Ken, but this conversation has gone a different direction, and points were brought into it in spite of you or I. I will not sit by and allow JT and others to be the only influence around here. Either way, from my standpoint, I addressed my opinion about evolution / creation. I will say to you, Ken, that the idiots walking amongst us are as much *Christian* as they are ANYONE ELSE! No corners the market on being a hypocrite or anything else of the sort, even if that’s how some may wish it to be. Again, Ken, this is bigger than you or I and ultimately, we all stand to win or lose because of it.

Whether this matters to you at all I cannot say, but I try not to lump you into any one label because I do not know you. Can you carry this conversation by doing the same? What about my statements do you not understand? Here it is again, one paint brush stroke doesn’t paint an entire wall.

What I see in your words is fear that perhaps who you thought were bible-thumping people that you seem to dispise may not actually be true. Believe it.

I hear some of you say that Christians are close-minded folks. Guess what? You’re right there with me. Fairy tales? Okay, if that’s what you think. But I bet you have your own. Try living life by loving people and attempting to get along with them.

I certainly do not have whatever fears you think I have. Sorry to disappoint.

There’s a patch of seemingly unused land at the south end of West Seattle HS (next to the Episcopal church) that I think would be a wonderful spot for a pea-patch. It’s already fenced and gets lots of sunshine. I wonder how one goes about siteing a new pea patch? It could be a great opportunity for the high school students to learn hands-on organic gardening etc.

JoB, many many young women I know don’t care for Hillary (and I am referring to Democratic women here, in our 20s and 30s.) To imply that because we disagree with you, we must be victims of the right wing hate machine is insulting. Reasonable people can disagree about the best direction for the party (which I still think would have been Edwards, actually). The Old Democrat ways don’t work any more and have not stopped the neo-cons from doing their damage to the country. We have to try a different way, and maybe Obama can offer that (maybe he can’t, but I know Hillary can’t, or she would have showed it by now.)

I did not start this thread to discuss religion.

Religion seems to be involved because it is pretty much only the subset of christianist who think the literal interpretation of genesis and other tales from the Bible should trump not only paleontology and biology but geology, cosmology, astronomy, genetics and a hundred other fields of study, who also seek the political power to ram that insanity down the throats of the rest of is.

But if you expect sane humans to allow the idiots among us to control the education of public school children in a way that denies all reason and rationality, all measurable evidence and observable interaction, and tries to equate astronomy with astrology, then we shall have a fight for the future.

Children can recover from the fairy tales of youth as long as they are allowed to think and learn.

They may not recover from dogma taught as science.

Now mainstream Christians seem to get upset when I point out the ugly side of the Fundamentalist Bibliolatry. I can only assume it to be for one reason. Your particular sect or denomination has been slowly poisoned by the same heresy. The worship of the Bible rather than the Deity.

I unfortunately need to go out of town soon, on short notice, and my regular dog walker/sitter will not be able to care for my two dogs while I am gone.

I am open to sending my dogs someplace for overnight care, but will only consider a home-like environment. I have one 14 month old 60 lb. dog and a 5 month old puppy.

Does anyone have an in-house overnight dogsitter they trust who might be available on short notice? or a “home pet care” service to recommend? Thanks!
