he wasn’t doing the people’s business. he was doing some other people’s business dealing with interests that affect his district. (read the part in the article about apple exports.) and they paid him to do it; taxpayers didn’t.

i’ll take that over aetna or group health or those corporate drug pushers flying john boehner to pebble beach for a three-day golf retreat for three times the money any day of the week.

$21,000? you’re seriously freaking out over $21,000? five days for a plane ride halfway across the globe for a congressman and staff. probably got some good food and stayed in a place without roaches or rats, too. scandalous!

crikey. go find some other witch to burn at the stake.

or maybe you could email old baghdad jim and have him post here.

“The democrats are going to have to get this done on their own somehow.”

I don’t think so. The Democrats don’t have to do anything. And I, for one, hope they don’t. They’re holding the boss card on this one. Obama is offering a deal that, if he were working with folks that show good faith, would be a slam dunk. Keep the middle class tax cuts, have a nice holiday, and when we come back to work we’ll get busy on the rest of it and have serious negotiations. But the Repubs seem to have lost the ability to deal in anything other than hostage style negotiation. After 4 years of putting up with their cr*p, I’m hoping the “Mr Nice Guy” Obama is exchanged for the “I Drink Your Milkshake” Obama.

government spending as a percentage of GDP has been dropping since obama took office. GDP growth has been slower, of course, but it’s still rising.

the problem is that government revenue as a percentage of GDP has been flat or falling, too.

like i’ve said before – yeah, we need to cut spending. but you can’t cut your way to a balanced budget. it’s impossible. with a roughly $3.6 trillion budget, and a $1.1 trillion deficit, you’d have to cut almost half of the budget merely to balance it and start paying the interest.

we have to grow government’s share of GDP until we get to a manageable and sane place.

and in the interest of improving the dialogue and civility, i understand what you mean by “entitlement,” skeeter. but i still hate that term.

you’d feel the same way if i started calling the mortgage interest deduction an entitlement, even though everyone with the ability to do so takes advantage of it. some more than others. does that make the rich more entitled than the middle class?

people pay good money in good faith into social security and medicare for 40 years or more, and they expect to see a return. no, it isn’t a retirement plan; they should plan on that on their own. but those programs are designed to be there so that no matter how bad shit gets, pensioners always have enough money to keep them from dying on the streets.

those programs can be tweaked to make them more solvent, but they shouldn’t have a meat axe taken to them just to square the ledger sheet.

hey, wait a minute. the white house has already cut the budget. why don’t republicans want to talk about that?

    http://www.tnr.com/blog/jonathan-cohn/110606/obama-deficit-reduction-offer-spending-cut-tax-increase-boehner#

The trouble with this analysis is that it ignores history: As part of the 2011 Budget Control Act, Obama agreed to spending reductions of about $1.5 trillion over the next ten years. If you count the interest, the savings is actually $1.7 trillion. Boehner should have no problem remembering the details of that deal: As Greg Sargent points out, Boehner at the time actually gloated about the fact that the deal was “all spending cuts.”

And now, with this latest offer, Obama is proposing yet more spending reductions, to the tune of several hundred billion dollars. Add it up and it’s more than $2 trillion in spending cuts Obama has either signed into law or is endorsing now. That’s obviously greater than the $1.6 trillion in new tax revenue he’s seeking.

that’s a pretty simplistic approach, hooper, because the economy is a large, dynamic animal. and government revenue depends largely on how well the economy is working.

returning tax rates on higher incomes to previously functional levels is an expedient, because the economy is not recovering quickly enough to prevent the government from running budget deficits for the immediate future.

however, if the current economic trends continue, we’ll get there, with or without tax increases.

but, yes. we should cut some of the fat. the political problem is what various factions consider fat, and what they consider muscle.

you want cuts? start with defense contracting. lots of redundancy there, and there are a lot of jobs being done by contractors that could be done more cheaply by federal employees.

like the army peeling its own potatoes for a change.

gotta be careful, though. lots of cuts will lead to even higher unemployment. one of the worst unemployment factors in the past 4 years has been the layoff of hundreds of thousands of federal and state employees due to budget-cutting. and because of that budget-cutting governments have less money to bid for private contracts to build and maintain things.

that’s why ARRA – aka “porkulus” – was a good idea. not great, mind you, but good and necessary.

“I have shown you that JFK link. He did state what the country needed to boost the economy.”

I have a news flash for you. That was nearly 50 years ago… and in an entirely different regulatory climate than today’s.

You know.. before Ronnie and the political whiz kids decimated regulation and tanked our economy…

i have news for you Rich..

the American people don’t want more of the same old same old

Obama was re-elected on the NOT THEM ticket…

    Not Republican.

and the same thing happened in nearly every district in America where redistricting didn’t guarantee a Republican win.

the only way that will change is if Obama continues down his Republican lite trajectory..

and even then it isn’t likely to swing Republican.

That energized base that turned out the vote actually expects some progressive legislation out of their progressive President.

The Republicans made me do it isn’t going to fly any more…

and if democrats hang on to that position both parties are likely to find themselves redundant in the next election.

You are really invested in the concept of the BIG LIE aren’t you?

It really is too bad you do’t apply the same standards to the fellas on what you consider to be your side of the political aisle.

your outrage would be both more believable and understandable if you did.

Dobro. Why does there need to be this investigation? It is really on the Administration to come clean. But they won’t and that is why I am complaining.

It’s pretty obvious that Susan Rice was a pawn. But why? Why the story about a video causing the attack and the death?

Because, the admin was pushing a line of cock and bull that Al Qaida had been minimized. Obviously not and it was counter to the administrations propoganda machine.

When the acting Libyan President says it was a preplanned terrorist attack, why then did the CIA talking points get repeated for a few more days. Why would the Admin, Carney and crew not call it a Terrorist Attack?

Because it would hurt the President’s re-election.

Here is what he said nine days afterwards. QUESTION: “We have reports that the White House said today that the attacks in Libya were a terrorist attack. Do you have information indicating that it was Iran, or al-Qaeda was behind organizing the protests?”

OBAMA: “Well, we’re still doing an investigation, and there are going to be different circumstances in different countries. And so I don’t want to speak to something until we have all the information. What we do know is that the natural protests that arose because of the outrage over the video were used as an excuse by extremists to see if they can also directly harm U.S. interests.”

    — President Obama, Univision Town Hall, Sept. 20

At the UN General Assembly, 14 days after the attack.

“That is what we saw play out in the last two weeks, as a crude and disgusting video sparked outrage throughout the Muslim world. Now, I have made it clear that the United States government had nothing to do with this video, and I believe its message must be rejected by all who respect our common humanity.”

    — Obama, speech to the U.N. General Assembly, Sept. 25

Then on Sept 26 Jay Carney said that the President said it was a Terror Attack

It took the President 15 days to change the story (with as much damage control as possible).

At least Hillary changed her story earlier.

I think the President owes the American people an apology.

    What do you not get?

I have shown you that JFK link. He did state what the country needed to boost the economy.

When Republicans give in and raise taxes after Democrats promise to lower spending the Republicans get screwed because the Democrats keep spending and break their promises.

You always talk about Clinton. Well, he did get a minor tax increase but Gingrich and crew were fiscally responsible. Something Pelosi was not during her reign.

Now after four years and Trillions of dollars of debt you want to believe that the tripe you are pushing is working? 40 cents on every dollar borrowed and it is only going to get worse. You can’t defend that.

You Demonize Supply Side, but you don’t take in all sides. Lower rates, less loopholes, less spending (LESS SPENDING) equals more revenue.

Now, admittedly the Bush years saw him lower tax rates for the lowest income levels AND the Republicans spent too much. But even Bush’s worst year of Deficit spending was only about one quarter of what Reid and Obama have been spending.

You are handing a selfish debt to the youth of our country. You are being selfish. You are not willing to do what is necessary. It is you who are ruining our country. You don’t even have to pretend you are nice anymore.

We do not want what you are selling because it is corrupt. Seen a budget the last 3 to 4 years? Nahh. Seen meaningful cuts in spending? Nahh.

BTW, you could have had some meaningful legislation the first two years of Boy Wonders administration, but you didn’t do it.

HE PROMISED TO CUT THE DEFICITS IN HALF. Promise broken.

So the raiding of Medicare will continue for the upcoming fiscal disaster called the ACA.

And if any of you even think the Republican party is dead, think about 2010. Worst Democrat defeat. Jerrymandering districts? You got your collective asses kicked.

The popular narrative is that the Republican party is going away. No Way. I have complete faith that it will rise again and send the left into fits of agony.

In fact look for another butt kicking in two years. With the ACA and the fiscal cliff looming, I bet even some of the Obamaphone voters might have some remorse.

So pat yourselves on the back, but don’t sprain your shoulder doing so. You won the Presidency and had at best very slight gains in the Senate and House. Nothing has changed really.

But, it will allow the next generation of Republicans to test the waters and see where some, and only some, changes need to take place.

Your party will screw this up just like the Republicans did when they became complacent not so long ago.

    With apologies to Clement Moore…

‘Twas shortly before Christmas, when all thro’ the ‘hood,

    Not a creature was stirring, not that they should;

Tracy was in her ‘kerchief, and Patrick in his cap,

They’d shut down their laptops for a typically short evening nap

When over on the Duwamish there arose such a hum,

‘Twas all they could do to shake off the sleepless numb.

Awake once again as the tweets flew like a flash,

Rebooted Windows and threw up the sash.

No matter what, no matter when, it was time to go,

West Seattleites needed them – to stay in the know.

So they whistled, and shouted, and call’d out by name:

“Now Jefferson, now Madison, now Arbor Heights and Denny,

    “On Alki, on Chief Sealth, on Gatewood, and Genessee;

“From the tip of Alki to the top of the Myrtle towers

“Now text away! Text away! Text away all!”

While once an ancient city burned (unreported) under a fiddler named Nero,

There is no doubt about OUR neighborhood hero

With journalistic integrity, high standards, and ethics proved true,

Assisted by a sleigh full of helpers – and CJ Boffoli too.

And then in a twinkling, we saw on the forum

That Seattle Magazine had indeed announced with decorum

On behalf of West Seattle and all its elves

Tracy and West Seattle Blog were among the Best of Two Thousand Twelve!

Our eyes – how they twinkled! Our dimples how merry,

    We know they’re as dependable as the Fauntleroy Ferry;

Not ones to bask in glowing words, they went straight back to work,

But after news fill’d all the stockings; it was time for a perk,

A sidetrip to Sponsor Zippy’s for a bit of a nosh

Then off to see the light shows at Helmstetler and Menashe.

Finally it was time to spring to their sleigh, give their team a whistle,

And head back to world headquarters, on the corner at Thistle.

But we heard them exclaim, ‘ere they drove out of sight

Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good night!

Congrats Tracy and crew! Thanks for being our everyday Santa…

Agreed. Drivers should slow down. Here, there, and everywhere.

    >>Two kids were hit by a motorist yesterday in the school zone outside Chief Sealth.. SLOW DOWN!

–Um, as I understand it, the kids who were hit yesterday at Sealth were run down deliberately, so speeding was not the issue there at all.

Guess what was the issue, though.

    A friggin’ off-leash dog . . .

Witnesses said two girls were walking to school when a dog ran up and jumped on one of them so she pushed it away. Witnesses said the dog’s owner became enraged and intentionally drove her car into the girls.

    http://tinyurl.com/brbwrnq

Considering incidents like this one, is it any wonder that people are hesitant to confront off-leash doggers at Lincoln Park?

    #775729

I live on 35th and can say with some certainty that people drive WAY too fast here (in general and in the school zone). It may be a four/ five lane road, but it’s also a residential drive. The more cameras SDOT/ SPD put in, the slower people will drive (I don’t care if it’s driving the limit because you’re a good person, or out of fear of a ticket). I’m all for it!

The other day I was driving home heading south on 35th (going the limit, mind you), and a car sped past me as the road goes downhill just past the fire station. They were going maybe 50… fast enough that they weren’t able (or maybe willing) to stop for the red light at Thistle and the red light cam totally busted them (I saw the flash). I think I actually cheered out loud.

Lots of families live up and down 35th… please just drive the speed limit. If you’re late for work don’t try to make the time up on 35th especially in a school zone (you’re just going to sit on the bridge anyway).

I tried long ago to unsubscribe from his emails but since I am a PCO and my email is public I seem unable to stop them.

I voted for McGinn because he was the most ineffectual of the candidates and unless someone else who has even a smaller chance of achieving their crazy goals appears I will continue to vote for him and vote to endorse him at party meetings.

Any of you who want to push your favorite candidate ( or quash the hopes of your least favorite) should join the 34th district Democrats. You can do so online now which will get you on the mailing list for the newsletter and your dues/contributions will go where you as a member vote them to go.

    https://www.completecampaigns.com/public.asp?name=34thDem&page=1

If there is no PCO in your precinct, you can be appointed to the post and run in the next pco election.

It pays nothing and you have to talk to your neighbors and occasionally politicians and other riff-raff.

I know a lot of the straight razors used in many places are the one use type….nice handle with a swing out holder where a razor slides in. Once it’s used, it’s tossed.

I can’t imagine why just keeping a permanent razor in an alcohol filled glass wouldn’t do the trick. A good wipe followed by a soak for a while seems like it would kill just about anything.

I realize how incredibly scientific that must sound…

near as i can tell, you have to do your own leg work. but wsdot has a traffic map archive, so you can go back to any date/time and see what traffic was like:

    http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/Traffic/Seattle/Flowmaps/Archive/

and here is the flow map data for daily number of cars on seattle roadways:

    http://www.seattle.gov/transportation/tfdmaps.htm

but my experience is that if you leave home after 6:45 am on weekdays, you’ll be in slow west seattle bridge traffic, and it usually doesn’t let up until 9:30 or 10.

coming home, it obviously depends on which route you take.

if i’m not on 99 or I-5 headed for the west seattle bridge by 3 pm, i’ll use surface streets like first avenue to the bridge, second avenue to the columbia street entrance on 99, or columbian way. but if you’re south of downtown, traffic into west seattle is pretty easy, even during rush hour.

    good luck.

My sister in law and my 5 nephews/niece are homeless and looking for an apartment or house preferably in West Seattle, but anywhere north of Kent. They are low income. We have been all over craigslist, WSB and driving around the area, but have had no luck yet. Please if you have any leads on a place or know anyone who would like to help a needy family out and could pass on the info it would be so very appreciated.

I worked at 7-eleven in a different state for a couple years. We sold a ton of lotto tickets. This was before the days of self-service machines. The clerk would have to key in the numbers the customer wanted to purchase if the customer didn’t fill out a little slip. You see the same people buying lotto tickets day after day. I was pretty bored, so I ran my own social experiments a few times.

One game we had (again, this is not WA state) was a daily “pick 3” drawing. Customer picks three numbers, say 8, 15, and 19. If all three are drawn you’d win a few hundred bucks or whatever. Gamblers are so finicky though. Just to see what would happen, I would sometimes ring up different numbers on purpose. For example, I’d type in 8, 16, and 19. I’d then print the slip and ask “hold on a second, what numbers did you want?” Customer would respond “I wanted 8, 15, and 19.” I’d say “Oh my mistake, I keyed in the numbers wrong. Let me cancel this ticket and get you the numbers you want.” Every time I made this “mistake” the customer would always blurt out “Hold on! Hold on! Let me buy the numbers you input incorrectly, and also let me buy the numbers I originally wanted.” Gamblers are creatures of superstition. In their mind, the numbers I “accidentally” printed became necessary for them to have. It was fun to watch.

I only did this a few times because I was bored and liked conducting experiments. Please don’t hate me.

JoB, don’t think this legislation has anything to do with a/the campaign. It does have to do with the fact that pendulum is way past center. And the fact that both parties are beholden to WS.

As long as $ is at the core of our elections, the voice of the people is marginalized. I’m looking for any way I can to support getting $ out of elections as job #1. It’s gonna’ take years, maybe decades but it’s worth the fight. We be doomed otherwise.

Obama’s not Romney campaign didn’t.. and that’s a good thing

but this kind of legislation is the inevitable result of a not ____ campaign.

the proposed fee is too small to be effective.

it’s good that Obama is pandering to his base by proposing a fee at all..

but the fee he proposes does little more than pay lip service to their request….
