KimberleyParticipantand waynster for the win.
@scouser – Ha Ha, that went right over my head, although now you mention it – anything with Martin Clunes is worth watching. I’ve been quite partial to both MI:5 and Strike Back (including the lost season one that never made it stateside).

snaParticipantCheap labor overseas combined with technology has and will continue to eliminate employment opportunities for those who lack a strong education or some sort of unique skill. The days of an able bodied person just being able to work hard and get ahead are quickly vanishing, if they haven’t already.
.
Liberals like to blame diminished union power, tax policy, education, etc., and while those trends haven’t helped, they aren’t the root cause of the working poor’s problems. And reversing these trends likely won’t fix the problem.
.
There’s a HUGE supply of cheap labor in China, Mexico, India, and southeast Asia. And more and more jobs that require routine tasks (assembly lines) or relatively minor skill (tax preparation) can be done with technology and software. There’s no reason to think this will change anytime soon.
.
So those with the skills and opportunity to automate away 10,000 jobs get very very rich And those owners of businesses who can replace expensive labor with cheap overseas labor also get very very rich. A relatively small minority is getting rich by eliminating the need to American labor.
.
From an economic efficiency standpoint, this is the optimal outcome, but it creates one hell of a income inequality problem. Frankly, I see no real solution other than a very steep income tax with negative tax rates below 40K.

LaconiqueMemberThank you, Cait!! This shameful omission and the mistakes in both literary history and UK political geography had nearly convinced me that they just don’t make Anglophiles like they used to. God save the Queen, the Doctor, the Gunners, and Billy Shakespeare.

waynsterParticipantI am a simple person by nature with complex issues that are easily fixed. I find that laughter relaxes me along with nature the quiet peacefulness of snow falling at midnight waves splashing on rocks telling their story …..sitting outside on a cold or hot summer night. Then again the doctor bending my ear about what I shouldn’t be doing do I listen no. I live the past only to remember what the future might bring boring to some simple to me…..

gmabettyParticipantII sometimes stay in my apartment, no tv, just quiet, while reading a good book. Its like I need to step away from everyone, even best friends for a shirt while. Being in our 70’s (that’s my close buddies) we all have our little times when we need “space”. Sometimes feelings can easily be hurt. We all learn after a while what’s good or bad times. But we still enjoy each others company and support when necessary.
I have not had to give in to the arthritis pain in my feet as yet and lean on pain pills or shots, so far. Already know that my next move would be shots into certain areas of feet.
I know my pain isn’t to the extent that JOB has to deal with, thank goodness. I still love to walk only shorter distance and time. More than 3 hours and I suffer at night or next day.
Being in a building of senior citizens , we all have to learn when to avoid certain people at times and mostly offer “hello” and walk on.
Ive always used walking, whether fast or slow, as a good stress reliever. I’ve always preferred outdoors so can enjoy all the natural beauty around us. I try to live and enjoy my life as it is.

KevinParticipantTruffle Salt made with black truffles. Not for everyone, it’s kind of an acquired taste.

It has the ability to transform one food into a whole new culinary sensation.
.
It can be found locally at the WS Thriftway as well as the Pike Place Market.
.
If you are adventurous, try the 10% version.

miwsParticipantWasn’t that an Arthur Treacher’s? I am very vaguely remembering the one you mention, perhaps at the location that has long time now been a Skipper’s?
I remember others in the Puget Sound region, and I believe they may have been a national chain, or at least covering several states.
I also want to say that they were about the first in the area to offer malt vinegar to squirt on the fish, (and chips, if you’re like me), when all of the other places only offered a lemon wedge.

December 26, 2013 at 9:35 pm #802073BorealisMemberSeaopgal thank you for the helpful suggestions and should this type of encounter happen again I will be better prepared to set a better boundary quicker. It caught me by surprise and unfolded slowly as I first was assessing if the person was intoxicated or mentally ill. I wanted to be kind and give him a chance to say something and was caught off guard about the money. He did go back to his table and kept to himself, but I the escalation of money giving and second approach disturbed me. I don’t want to set off a witch hunt, but also hope that by putting something out in the public space, parents like me might have or revisit the conversation with their own children, hopefully I am wrong and this was just a chance encounter. If there is a person at large, I hope that people better prepared than I might help keep safe boundaries.

WalkerParticipantThey still use feed corn. Sure it’s mostly grass fed, but there is no way the can keep up with quantity of milk the need all year long and not feed their cows grain. It’s probably fine. Probably.
I’m not saying to stop using the organic label. I’m saying it got watered down once it was taken over by the dept of ag. Sure the greens you get from a local farmer are going to be great, but the big food corps are able to label things organic that are not even close to what normal folks would consider organic.

Within the last half hour, someone has tagged it with spray paint.
Was it tagged by seal sitters for pick up, I wonder?

while i will agree that a little snark goes a long way.. i think that for some snark is the first step towards engagement… and engagement is a good thing.
i think of the many evenings that i sign on here and am simply too exhausted to engage …
there are a lot of paths to that mind numbing fatigue.
Jans…
since you are now at maybe once a year..
perhaps monthly massages would be an achievable goal
any massage therapists out there you would like to give a fellow massage therapist some much needed TLC ?
Mertrognome
each year i try to find one aspect of my life that i would like to improve… and work on it a little at a time..
it’s worked for almost everything except getting well and losing weight :)
*****
i know.. i know.. I am going to save the exercise/health/you could be thin/well if only you applied yourself some time…
if i just gave up all treats like chocolate and the cocacola i use to keep moving and moved more i would lose weight… maybe
that could work.
It didn’t the last few times i gave up cocacola..
and it didn’t the last few times i was too sick to consume anything resembling sugar…
but it might
oddly enough..
the only time i have lost more than 10 pounds .. and kept it off for any length of time..
was when i moved here. I lived on cocacola and chocolate for nearly 3 weeks while i sold the house, packed and moved…
i kept the weight off till i crashed.
When i finally got up again.. it was back.
i am not sure now how i would move more without the cocacola…
i tend to nap A LOT when i give it up…
and i don’t have the stamina to venture far from home :(
but still.. i am working on that one again…
when i last substituted green tea capsules backed by excedrin for cocacola my doc asked me how much i was enjoying that .. needless to say i wasn’t.. but i was able to give up cocacola and limit the naps …
my goal this year is less naps AND less cocacola…
Chocolate is my only real sin.
I don’t drink.. don’t eat pastry very often.. generally skip desert.. try not to grab fast food on the run …
and i eat my 7 servings of fruit and veggies.. in their whole raw form at least 5 out of 7 days a week…
See… I really should be skinny .. just maybe not as skinny as i was for the first half of my life :)
chocolate is what i use to treat myself for pushing through the pain and fatigue
to do that one (ok.. several) extra thing(s) i thought i couldn’t manage.
Blame me if you will..
but i am not giving it up.
and oh how i wish i could move more…
right now my aerobic program is dancing to one of those musical stuffed animals with a rock and roll christmas message.
I got feisty one day last week and 2 30sec sessions in a row nearly undid me for the week…
my Christmas..
From now on, I am going to conquer my world one song at time …
i promised hubby who thinks watching my workout is a hoot..
in the meantime.. i am holding the line at what i consider an unacceptable compromise
but where my body returns every time i lose enough to count :(
my doc says we will worry if my metabolism flips and i start losing weight…
that could indicate too many nasty new problems to count.

i know. i know. TMI

miwsParticipantWhat a great list!
9,10,11,12 and the Afterthought are so spot on, IMHO.
I have always tried to look on the bright side, no matter what is/has gone on in my life, and no matter what, realize that there are others out there that have had to deal with much worse circumstances, and perhaps didn’t have the support I may have had to deal with a particular situation. I try to retain perspective.
I definitely, the past two and a half plus years, have added several more of the “right people” to my group of friends.
And, although I realize many people’s lives are complicated, and that those complications have been “dealt” them, I think there are many others that basically choose to make their lives complicated, whether it’s through a very busy, highly demanding career, and an intense non-work life; busy social life, racing the kids around to each of their after school activities.
While those people’s ambition to achieve their goals is highly admirable, at what cost? At what point do they just stop and catch their breath, and appreciate the great and simple things around them?
And finally, this:
7. Stop worrying and complaining.
I suppose this has happened plenty of times here on the Forums, but I think for the most part, we generally try to have a discussion, no matter what “side” we are on.
What I first thought of, though, as I read the above, was the concise, one sentence comments I read on articles on the Main Page, from the same commenters, with the same snarky tone each time. I picture them as the ones that just sit at their keyboard bitching all the time, and never taking action such as going to neighborhood meetings, and other meetings and gatherings that are provided to get community input on on a certain topic, or sending in feedback via e-mail, phone calls, letters and such.

anonymeParticipantKimberley, most of the “Young Ones” actors are now middle-aged, mainstream actors – barely recognizable as their former YO characters. I’ve seen a couple of them in episodes of “Midsomer Murders”. I’ll keep an eye out on the street for Neil…(aka Kimberley)!
Wake: IMHO, Churchill can’t compare to Dame Maggie. Judi Dench needs to be squeezed in there as well, along with my all-time fave Britcom “As Time Goes By”. In fact, I watch Brit TV so much that when I watch American TV I wonder why they talk so funny. Of course, there could be other reasons for that…
