To my dear West Seattleites and fellow Arbor Heights residents:

Please don’t allow your dogs to run loose. I was nearly attacked on a walk this evening by a large dog. The dog was in a fenceless yard, unattended and without a leash or a chain. She ran across the street to me and growled, barked, and showed her fangs as I pressed myself against a fence. She got less than two feet away from my bare legs. My mom and I screamed and yelled at the top of our lungs for someone to get their dog. Finally, a neighbor came outside after at least a minute. He said the dog belonged to his neighbor, whose yard she came from. The dog’s house and all of the neighboring houses had full driveways, yet no one else could be bothered to come out and help.

To the people who didn’t help: I sincerely hope you had fallen to the bystander effect instead of a lack of empathy.

To the owner: It’s incredibly irresponsible to allow your untrained dog to be left unattended outside when she has an instinct to protect her land by growling at and cornering passersby. I hope your dog doesn’t attack a person or one of the cats that roam the area. I also hope she doesn’t get hit by a car while she’s loose.

Imperial Hardscape LLC Phone Number 4257727707 did our retaining wall last year and they are coming back to do our sidewalk and flowerbeds in July. Lima and his crew are the best, just ask Mutual Materials, they highly recommend them as we do.

I don’t typically do this, but we’re in a jam. We have a sweet part Maine coon cat named Tuna, and she needs a temporary home when we go on our upcoming road trip. Would be July 2nd-18th. It’s a long shot, but if you’re interested in having a furry friend for two weeks please let me know. She lived with a couple cats before we adopted her, but probably wouldn’t do well with a dog. We have two small boys that she does well with them as she figures out how to have space when she needs it :) I can’t stomach taking her to a cat motel for 2 weeks and it makes me sad to have someone just stop in on her for an hour a day for that length of time. If interested, please drop me a line! Open to discussing compensation! Thanks!

When would be convenient for you for the city to maintain its roads? Often road work is scheduled to create the least disruption but there are times and project scopes where impact is unavoidable. In these cases mitigation happens but those options are often limited.

Many of the projects have complex scopes that require work beyond the surface and many of the projects that are primarily performed on the surface require extensive prep prior to the final pours of concrete or asphalt. By not performing those preparatory tasks and not pouring when conditions are good leads to repairs on that new work sooner.

Construction bids are made with certain assumptions and based on provided information. If there are issues discovered during that construction it’s possible that a reassessment of the engineering and associated costs may come into play, which is reasonable. Example may be poor soil conditions for soil compaction requiring additives or other solutions, utilities or other underground systems that were unknown due to age or 3rd party installations, etc. It would be very unreasonable to require a contractor to bid work and eat those unanticipated and unforeseen costs, especially on a low bid lump sum basis. That said, when contractors screw the pooch the may be subject to contractual penalties called “liquidated damages”. Often these are pecuniary in nature and are cumulative on a daily basis. In some contracts they are also substantial.

There is a labor shortage. Also, we have an entire generation that believes that physical labor is beneath them. I see it all the time in hiring and work performance. Much of this is due to HS counselors, for the last 20-25 years or so saying that the only options for students is college or the military. Vocational education has been cut, social pressure to get that degree, and no real understanding of the value of the trades and now those chickens are coming home to roost (which is great for my pay). It has also led to a glut in college graduates which has driven down the value of that degree in the job market. This creates a wicked double whammy effect (technical term) of broke young-uns complaining that good paying jobs just don’t exist even though they are literally everywhere if you’re willing to get dirty and, of course, start at the bottom.

So, in short, too much work, too few workers, a shortage in raw materials, and, perhaps, poor planning, leads to this lag in completion which is inconvenient for you. Oh, and that if we don’t repair roads when there are first issues then it leads to larger issues and more expensive and time consuming repairs.

Fingers are pointed at you because you’re the one who wrote the post! Sheesh.
I think there a lot of troubles in this city and I surely have no answers. many of us have things that trouble us about the verious problems in Seattle. For me, its the mountainous piles of garbage everywhere I look. I just don’t understand why the city and all of its ‘leaders’ can’t do something about it. Mental illness, homelessness, covid, all big problems that are complex. But why can’t they pick up they frikkin garbage?!

Yes, I could have called to police, and have done so many times in the 13 years I lived at the Junction. In my experience, unless you are a victim, the police aren’t especially interested in your report. Basically I became immune to the troubles at the Junction. I have great respect for the police and great sympathy for people with mental illness, but I simply got worn down and moved away. The Junction Association has no power over the violence at the Junction. I have communicated with them. “aa” and “tjd”, it’s easy for you to point a finger at me. But, why don’t you try living at the Junction for a while? You might understand. As much as I love new bike paths and green belts, at a certain point we need to fund a street force of people trained to properly deal with people with mental illness, and stop expecting the police to be everything to everybody and every situation.

Has anyone else noticed that West Seattle roads are under constant construction, with inordinately long project timelines? Holden and Delridge have been under construction for all of COVID now. That, and during a time when the bridge is closed so that area already relies on heavier traffic than normal. And then, before that is completed there is construction up that hill to add speed bumps- speed bumps of all things. And then there is the construction north of that prohibiting entrance to Delridge by Cloverdale and just north of that is more construction to turn onto Barton. All of these are now taking months.

With this kind of road work, I would honestly rather not have road work at all for a year. Why is it so hard to get construction bids for projects, with clear timelines, and then charge the construction company if they go vastly over in time or resources? Perhaps I am not understanding something, and if so I’d love to hear. Every other area I’ve lived in (about a dozen now) have not had anywhere near these kinds of problems with roadwork. I can only assume it’s a criminal misuse or mismanagement of public funds.

I have seen some similar threads with some weak responses like the fact that hours are more limited during COVID or labor is more difficult or individual explanations of having to redo work done already. But when this occurs repeatedly, for years, what explanation is there really for this? And what recourse do we have to end this?

Today at about 3PM I was waiting for the bus at Alaska and California, and that psychotic guy who haunts that intersection tossed over trash bins and started attacking black men. The men weren’t bothering him in any way, yet he threw a chair at one and confronted another, both in the middle of the intersection, stopping traffic. No police ever appeared. This kind of behavior by that insane guy has been happening in that block for years (I lived there for 13 years). Is there nothing that anyone can do to get that guy some help or institionalize him? He is a scar on the Junction and now is attacking others during the day. It will only get worse. The black men who were attacked evidently didn’t call the police. Guess why? This is bad!

In 2013 an mRNA vaccine startup was funded by a $25 million DARPA grant given by the federal government under the Obama administration.
    That startup was Moderna.
The in 2016, Obama got Moderna another 125 million after their mRNA vaccine technology showed promise.
Moderna then created their successful COVID vaccine in January of 2020, four months before trumps “Operation Warp speed” even existed.
So, no, the science was not rushed.
It was developed after years of research and testing.
