► Baumgartner broke the longstanding altitude record by about 26,000 feet.

► He came agonizingly close to breaking the longstanding freefall time record. Missed by just 18 seconds.

► He came surprisingly close to hitting Mach 1, but I suspect there are absolute limits that will keep a human from ever reaching that speed in a freefall, regardless of the altitude he jumps from. In any case, I’m not sure an unshielded human body could even withstand the pressure waves associated with Mach 1, so maybe it’s a good thing that he didn’t do that. Better for him to make it down alive, IMHO. (Extra points for touching down with both feet.)

This mission didn’t have much of a science payload, but it’s still intriguing to think that someone would actually do this.

Ahem!

What about me?
