6:00 pm, Wed., June 17, 2015, C & P Coffee Company (WSB sponsor)

What happens when you unite (1) a Boy-Science Wonder who can bend time, (2) a transracially-adopted, African-American girl who’s the CEO of her own company, and (3) a super Seattle librarian? You get an opportunity to build the best, kids’ summer reading list ever! On June 17, 2015, join WordsWest Literary Series for its first-ever Kids’ Night at a special start-time of 6 pm. Be astounded as local children¹s authors Sundee Frazier and Charles & Elisheba Johnson introduce brave, new, diverse heroes and heroines who are changing the world with their ingenuity. Meet West Seattle Public Library’s Leslie Sumida, who can find the right book for any reader. There will be yummy treats for kids! And their parents should know that C & P Coffee Co. also serves beer and wine.

Sundee T. Frazier is an award-winning novelist of books for young people, including Brendan Buckley’s Universe and Everything in It, Brendan Buckley’s Sixth-Grade Experiment, and The Other Half of My Heart. Her recently sold novel, Cleopatra Edison Oliver, CEO, features a transracially-adopted African-American girl who wants to change the world with her enterprising spirit. Sundee is the recipient of the American Library Association’s Coretta Scott King/John Steptoe New Talent Award and was invited to appear on the TODAY Show for Al Roker’s Book Club for Kids. Brendan Buckley’s Universe was a 2015 selection by Seattle Public Library for the 20th Global Reading Challenge. Her books have been nominated for twelve state children’s choice awards, including the Sasquatch Award in Washington State.

Charles & Elisheba Johnson are the co-authors of The Adventures of Emery Jones, Boy Science Wonder, which now comprise two volumes—Bending Time (2013) and The Hard Problem (2015). Elisheba Johnson, former owner and curator of Faire Gallery Café, is an Executive and Commissions Liaison for the Office of Arts and Culture in Seattle. She writes for “Curating a Life,” her parenting blog, and creates mixed media art pieces. Dr. Charles Johnson is a novelist, essayist, literary critic, short-story writer, philosopher, and Professor Emeritus at the University of Washington, Seattle. He has published thousands of drawings as a cartoonist and illustrator, two collections, Black Humor (1970) and Half-Past Nation-Time (1972), and created, co-produced and hosted the 1970 PBS drawing program “Charlie’s Pad.” Charles is a MacArthur fellow, the recipient of an American Academy of Arts and Letters Award for Literature and a National Book Award for his novel Middle Passage.

Every third Wednesday, 7 pm, at C & P Coffee Company, WordsWest hosts literary events that range from readings by published local and national authors, to craft discussions and guided writing explorations for every experience level. Each week, a poetry lover from a local, independent business shares her favorite poem as part of the Favorite Poem Project.

WordsWest is curated by West Seattle writers Katy E. Ellis , Susan Rich , and Harold Taw .
