Beveridge Place Pub reopening delayed

beveridgesunday.jpg

Thanks to the people who just e-mailed and texted us to let us know that Beveridge Place Pub has sent out an e-mail update saying plans to reopen tomorrow in the new location next door, after closing the old location Sunday, are on hold because of inspection issues. We tried calling but got no answer; the e-mail forwarded to us goes on to say, “Unfortunately, we can’t provide an exact date for the new place right now, but we’re sure you understand we are trying to resolve things as fast as possible.”

Leave it to the City of Seattle to screw up someone’s business plans ! If they keep this up ( Websters and now the Pub ) there will be no place to eat or drink in West Seattle.

Inspections delay a lot of restaurant openings… this doesn’t surprise me. I’m looking forward to checking out the new digs.

jk67: as far as I know they will not be serving food, but you will still have all the great delivery options as at the old location.

Did anyone hear the interview with the owner of the Elliot Bay Brewery today on KOMO 1000 in reference to the rising prices of hops around the world?
I guess beer prices are on the rise as hops have gone from $5 a pound last year to $15 a pound currently.
Ahhhhh fudge! With beer prices going up and salmon prices on the rise, there goes summer. Might as well tell me the sun wont shine. Whats next? Tri-tip?

It’s not just the cost to make beer. The price of lot of grains and foods has gone way up, all over the world. Food costs are up over 50% in some poor countries. From today’s world news:

Food Riots in Haiti: Haitian President Fails to Restore Order
Angry Food Riots Are the New Face of Hunger

As part of the background to this (the biofuels feedstocks debate was brought up in the discussion about the new “green” filling station in WS), here are a few brief excerpts from a long article in the Dec. 6, 2007 issue of The Economist, that cites several reasons for the global increases in food prices, including this fairly significant one:
    .
“America is easily the world’s largest maize exporter—and it now uses more of its maize crop for ethanol than it sells abroad. … Ethanol is the dominant reason for this year’s increase in grain prices. It accounts for the rise in the price of maize because the federal government has in practice waded into the market to mop up about one-third of America’s corn harvest.

“… the demands of America’s ethanol programme alone account for over half the world’s unmet need for cereals. Without that programme, food prices would not be rising anything like as quickly as they have been. According to the World Bank, the grain needed to fill up an SUV would feed a person for a year.

“… In poor countries, in contrast, food accounts for half or more of the consumer-price index (over two-thirds in Bangladesh and Nigeria).”

I asked one of the bartenders about food at the new place the last time I was in there and he said they’re not going to have food at first, but may decide to add a kitchen if business is good and there is sufficient demand. At least it looks like they’ll have plenty of space for a kitchen at the new place!

Anyone know what’s happening with the old space? I heard the reason they built the new place was because the old building was slotted to be torn down, but that turned out not to be the case. So, I would assume another business will be going in there. Another bar would be fine with me. You’d have a trifecta of the Corner Inn, Beveridge, and the new joint.

My understanding is that there is going to be a restaurant there.

Sorry, comment time is over.
