West Seattle Crime Watch: Dog bites kid; fare beats cabbie

handcuffs_2.jpgFrom the latest reports filed at the Southwest Precinct: A nine-year-old girl had to be rushed to Harborview Medical Center yesterday afternoon after a dog bit her in the face. It happened in the 7900 block of Delridge around quarter past 1; the dog’s owner wasn’t around when it happened, but the girl’s parents were. The report describes the dog as a 3-year-old pit bull named “Cain” and says it was taken away by Animal Control, along with another dog found at the location. Next, the cabbie attack:

NONPAYING FARE GETS VIOLENT: Early Monday morning, a cab driver took a 28-year-old man to 34th and Juneau. Instead of paying the fare, the man took a swing at the driver, who calmly asked again to be paid, and then got beaten up. The attacker ran away, but left his photo ID and wallet in the cab, which helped police identify him when a K-9 team tracked him to his nearby residence. Turns out he has a criminal record and a $5,000 warrant was out for his arrest in a malicious-mischief case. Police took him to jail, and he’s still there right now.

DRIVER PASSES OUT: Police made a DUI arrest early Monday in the parking lot of a West Seattle 7-11, where they found a 46-year-old man passed out in his car. He admitted he had driven there; blood-alcohol tests showed levels more than twice the legal limit. Officers say it was the suspect’s second DUI arrest in less than a year but he “does not have a conviction”; they also noted he kept talking loudly about how much this arrest was going to cost him.

FENCE FLAP: Police had to break up an argument in the 1000 block of California Lane just before noon yesterday. A man was yelling at two neighbors to get off his property; the police report notes that they are in an “ongoing civil property dispute.” Apparently the neighbors were taking photos of people hired to put up a fence, because they believed the fence was partly encroaching on their property; the man agreed it probably was and took that section down.

SUSPECTED PROWLER NABBED: A 911 call at 2:50 am Monday reported a prowler in the 1300 block of Alki. Police found a 35-year-old Capitol Hill man walking east on Alki Avenue; he told them he had been “throwing away stuff in the garbage cans” at the location where he was reported to have been prowling. They discovered a $5,000 drug-arrest warrant was out for him, and took him to the King County Jail. (He’s still there as of this writing.)

POSSIBLE PROWLER REPORTED: A resident in the 2900 block of 39th SW called police yesterday morning just before 10 am after seeing a man first knock on the front door, then ring the bell, then turn up at the back-porch door; the resident thought perhaps he was casing the house. He was described only as black with a “medium” complexion, 40s, 6 feet tall, white baseball cap, jacket and black pants.

SCHOOL BREAK-IN: Someone broke the glass in a door at Roxhill Elementary early Sunday morning, tried to steal a projector, and left bolt-cutters behind. School personnel think the burglar(s) may actually have made off with something but weren’t sure what as of the time the report was filed.

BREAK-IN NEARBY: Four blocks north of the school, in the 9000 block of 30th SW, someone ransacked a house last Saturday night, after getting in through an unlocked bedroom window. The items they took included jewelry, a TV, a PlayStation 2, DVDs, a DVD player, and power tools.

AERIAL BREAK-IN ATTEMPT: We’ve told you about two cases in the past few weeks where someone broke into West Seattle businesses by cutting through the roof. Last Wednesday morning at a Junction restaurant/bar, someone tried to do it again, but didn’t succeed, though they did manage to steal some bottles of beer by smashing through a window and reaching through the hole.

CAR BROKEN INTO: In the 9100 block of 45th SW, just before 2 o’clock this morning, a resident called 911 because someone tried to steal a neighbor’s car, breaking the driver-side window, breaking the steering column, and turning on the headlights before fleeing. Police woke up the car’s owner to break the news.

ANOTHER CAR BROKEN INTO: The door of a car parked in the 6900 block of 37th SW was pried open between 11 pm Monday and noon today; a laptop and $20 were taken.

AND YET ANOTHER CAR BROKEN INTO: At quarter till five in the morning last Sunday, in the 3900 block of 55th SW, a car alarm awakened the car’s owner, who got outside quickly, only to find a car window broken and audio equipment stolen.

TOOLS TAKEN: A construction site in the 1300 block of Alki Ave has had tools taken several times in the past month, but nobody reported the thefts till now.

As we always remind you – don’t hesitate to call police when you see or hear something suspicious, and of course when you believe a crime has been (or is being) committed. In addition to 911, there’s a non-emergency line at 206/625-5011. A big collection of Seattle Police crime-prevention resources is linked from the Southwest Precinct’s Crime Prevention page. I didn’t know you could get a DUI while parked in a parking lot?

Apparently you can. My friend pulled her car over and parked to ‘sleep it off’. The police stopped and questioned her, and she got a DUI.

If you are drunk in your car and in posession of your car keys, you can get a DUI.

Sorry, comment time is over.
