Last month, we told you a documentary was on the drawing board to tell the story of West Seattle’s Fauntleroy neighborhood, as planners sought marketing help. Now – they are ready to hire a producer – and have just issued a request for proposals. Here’s what they need and how to apply:

The Fauntleroy Centennial Group is an ad hoc committee charged with funding, writing, filming, producing, and presenting a 30-minute documentary DVD about this West Seattle neighborhood. To date, representatives of the Fauntleroy Community Association, Fauntleroy Church, and Southwest Historical Society are on the committee, as are local historians.

We have applied for a grant from the Seattle Department of Neighborhoods, secured one major sponsorship, and initiated conversations with other prospective sponsors. This request for proposals is intended to comply with the city’s requirement for a competitive process in selecting a video producer and to bring the best available talent to the project.

Project Objective

The documentary is to capture the historic events, people, and places that shaped the community, profile what it is today, and explore the challenges of retaining and nurturing community in an increasingly urbanized city.

Timing

Production will begin on or about April 1, 2008, when we expect to have a signed contract with the Department of Neighborhoods. The documentary is to be finished no later than July 18, 2008, and DVD copies provided no later than August 8, 2008.

Scope of Work

We invite statements of qualifications that demonstrate familiarity with the Fauntleroy neighborhood and expertise in the following areas:

• Developing story lines
• Developing and meeting a project schedule
• Sensitively interviewing people of diverse ages and backgrounds
• Doing high-quality filming of individuals, groups, interiors, and scenics
• Selecting and integrating archived photos, slides, and footage
• Editing, doing voice over, and managing post production.

The producer will preview the documentary with the committee prior to final edit, screen the finished documentary at a V.I.P. reception, and be available for media interviews to help publicize the DVD.

Volunteers will assist with research, support interviews, search archives, scan photos/slides, solicit permissions, arrange screenings, recruit and interface with sponsors, administer funds, and file reports.

Cost Estimate

A cost estimate is required for planning purposes. Actual compensation will be negotiated with the successful applicant.
