Local students have an offer for you: Free website design

Do you have a West Seattle nonprofit organization or small business with no website (or not much of one)? Chief Sealth High School teacher Sam Reed, and some of his students, have an offer for you:

Dear WSB readers,

As the Web Design & Business teacher at Chief Sealth High School, I am always looking for ways to involve my students with community businesses, organizations and non-profits. I believe that an early introduction to area professionals is a great way for today’s youth to gain insight into the “business world.”

Coming in late January, I will be offering an Advanced Web Design class. In Web Design 1, students worked on creating their own personal sites using some of the newest technology out there including Dreamweaver, Photoshop and Fireworks and Flash. Select students achieving high marks in that class are choosing to enroll in Web Design 2 for second semester. Here’s where you, the community, come in!

I need 5-10 local businesses and non-profit organizations that would be interested in having a new website built or re-designed by a team of Sealth students. This would be done at no cost (although a strategically delivered treat to the students might improve work) and all I ask is for a business contact to make him or herself available one morning a week from 8:45 to 9:30 for a “team meeting.” Students will then take your input and work during class on your site.

While I can’t promise the quality of work that you would pay for, free work – done by some top students using the latest technology – isn’t a bad offer! For any person or business interested, I’d be happy to discuss the project individually. Work will be accepted on a first come, first-served basis after answering a short questionnaire. Please contact me at my e-mail address below.

Thank you WSB and dedicated readers,

Sam Reed

I was on the student end of a program like this one several years ago at South Seattle Community College. It was a great help to my professional development and a great bonus for the client.

With what started yesterday morning with the help of WSB, spiraled into over 30 responses, a short article on the Seattle P-I online (http://blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com/thebigblog/archives/126735.asp) and a local radio plug this morning.

I want to thank everyone that has expressed interest. I have sent out follow-up questionnaires to each request, and will be processing through those this week.

The next step will be for me to set up meetings, so that I can meet interested parties face-to-face. From there I will select participants for the projects that will begin in late January.

Thanks so much! I am very excited about this opportunity and appreciate all of the local West Seattle support.

Sorry, comment time is over.
