Pelly Place planting: The video

Four clips from today’s event: First, the kids — from Gatewood Elementary, Denny Middle, and Chief Sealth HS, with EarthCorps assistants:

Here’s Nobel Peace Prize recipient Wangari Maathai assisting with one of the trees — this is what she’s famous for, if you aren’t familiar with her work; this online reference calls her the “Tree Woman of Kenya”:

Also at Pelly Place: King County Councilmember Dow Constantine. Our videographer asked him for a few words, and he reminded us he’s no stranger to ravine restoration:

Last but by no means least, part of the poetry performance by Gatewood Elementary students:

It was an amazing event- the kids were awesome and the Sealth students did a wonderful job mentoring the younger students in planting. we got 80 native plants into the ground! Pelly Place is a beautiful pocket of forest and worth exploring if you have never been there. It was truly inspring to share this space with Wangari. A thanks goes out to the Green Seattle Partnership and all of the teachers, parents and neighbors of Pelly Place that helped make this event possible!

EarthCorps holds many planting events-weekly- through the late fall and winter- check out our website to sign-up. I will be posting a spotlight on our website about this special event and will send in the link to WSB.

I think it’s really cool that the 3 schools worked together on this project. Way to go!
