West Seattle Junction Car Show 2009, report #2 (afternoon)

(scroll down for the latest photos/video; also, see our morning report here)

If you visit the WSB Forums, you’ve seen “westseattledood” – who sent the photo above that features their inspiration and sidekick, photographed with an appropriately licensed car here at the West Seattle Junction Car Show, continuing till 4 pm. As a co-sponsor of the show, we’re here all day, under a tent at the California/Alaska corner by Easy Street Records – the tents immediately east of us are where you can buy raffle tickets for a big stack of great prizes, and they’re giving away car show posters too. From WSB contributing photojournalist Christopher Boffoli, a wider perspective on the show, which is lining California SW from Genesee to Edmunds:

ADDED 1:17 PM: Here’s a 1935 Auburn that rolled in a while after the show started – its owner didn’t want to talk on camera but told us he’s a 1975 West Seattle High School alum:

We’ll continue posting photos and video through the afternoon – the Oh Boy Oberto hydroplane is here, next to Super Supplements kitty-corner from our spot, and we shot video as its engine fired up – note the firefighters standing by!

And two more detail shots from WSB contributing photojournalist Christopher Boffoli:

Square-dancers have been promenading at the heart of Walk-All-Ways and we’ll have video of them in a bit too.

ADDED 2:25 PM: Here’s that video:

In less than an hour, awards will be announced – there are awards for best of decade, best of carmaker, and a few other special awards. If you haven’t been down here yet, don’t miss the cars on Alaska on both sides of California – all the way over by the Farmers’ Market corner, you’ll see two vintage police cars, just west of the vintage fire trucks.

2:38 PM: Before the car awards, they’re running off some rapidfire contests in the intersection – including what was supposed to be “longest beard” but turned into “best beard” – the guy at far right (four contestants are in the shot, plus the show announcer with his back to the camera) won:

More to come as the West Seattle Junction Car Show continues till 4 pm – thanks again to the great folks who’ve stopped to chat or just yelled hi as they walked by!

3:02 PM: Awards are about to be announced. We’ll tweet them live at @wsblive before adding them here.

3:39 PM: Now that the awards are over, many of the cars are leaving, so if you were thinking about a last-minute trip down here, you might not see too much. “Best West Seattle car” went to Jim Clark for his 1957 Corvette; “Best in Show” went to a 1959 Chevy convertible – we’re tracking down some names to match to the numbers. Congrats to all, including show organizers – 257 cars registered this year, up from 100 last year (which was the show’s first year). We’ll publish a separate story later with the winners.

Oh darn! Now I’m trying to remember, of all the dogs I passed up at the show, if one of them was Dood! I would have said “hi” had I realized. But, I guess I could always use the excuse that I didn’t recognize him without his sunglasses! ;)

    .

What a great show again this year! Beautiful weather, and saw around 5 of my buddies with hotrods or classics, and their cars. Great to see TR and Patrick again, at yet another of their “remote broadcasts!”

    .

Now just waiting until around 4:00 or so, when I hope to be treated again this year, to a somewhat informal, and unintentional cruise by the drivers that come down California, through the Morgan Junction!

    .

Thanks to WSB, Liberty Bell, Puerto Vallarta, Bakey Nouveau, Talarico’s, and all of the other sponsors!

I took my 2 daughters (and hubby) and we had such a great time-it was so great to see so many people out enjoying West Seattle-and the cars, oh man how cool were they? If I wasn;t such an environmentalist I would totally have a hot rod :)What good fun-thanks.

The “comedy” guys over the speakers got annoying real quick. I don’t remember hearing them last year. Wish some nice music was played instead. Hope their not included next year.

Congrats to Jim Clark for taking Best in Show!

I was wearing souvenir T-shirt today, that one of my buddies that had his car at today’s show, gave to me as a gift several Christmases ago. The shirt is from a Yakima show, from around 2000-2001. On the front are two hotrods. As I was looking at Mr. Clark’s ‘vette, he said, “I like your shirt!” I thanked him, but thought it was a bit of an odd comment coming from a car guy. I mean, it’s a cool shirt and all, but it’s a typical car show shirt, which Mr. Clark has probably seen, and even owned a zillion of. Anyway, he contines, “…the car on the bottom, the ’39 Chev(?), was mine at the time…”

    .

So, that was a cool bit of a coincidence, and I ran into the buddy that gave it to me, and was able to share the story with him!

Missed the vintage police cars, they must have shown up later. I expected they might be there. Only slightly disappointed though, as I got to see them at the Greenwood Show, back in late June. A few weeks previous to that, I visited the Seattle Police Museum, down in the Pioneer Square area. The very nice senior lady worker, or more likely volunteer that was there and greeted me, gave me a thorough introduction. She told me about Officer Ritter, who has made a significant contribution to the museum. Many of the items that make up the exhibit belong to him. I had the pleasure of meeting him at the Greenwood Show, and was able to thank and compliment him on his efforts. My guess is that he most likely brought one of the classic police cars to this show.

    .

The museum has been open for around ten or so years now, and I’d been meaning to make it down there practically since it opened. Was very happy to have finally done so. It’s only $3.00 to get in, and I’d allow maybe up to two hours for a first time visit. I think it took me about an hour and a half, and that was with carefully reading all of the info at each exhibit, something I rarely do in such a situation with my short attention span. I usually just give a cursory glance, then move on to the next exhibit.

great job on the car show – but the announcer/horrid music was a bit much. Macarena? Old Time Rock and Roll? Seriously? 1996 called, and they want their crappy mix tape back. And that announcer was terribly loud, terribly annoying. Just put some classic rock on to go with the classic cars and leave it be.

    FWIW-
I could hear that loud announcer of the winning cars from
6 blocks away as I walked over to see the cars.
The car show was really neat, but I sure feel sorry for all the folks who live in the ‘noise bubble’ that the event created.
If someone who lived there wanted to enjoy a peaceful sunny Sunday afternoon in their garden, well, they were out of luck.

I heard from my uncle that the music wrecked a lot of this car show, but that it was one of the best turn outs ever? Hopefully I will be there next year!

Show Cars are in my blood! Third generation racer ;)

Sorry, comment time is over.
