West Seattle Crime Watch: 2 incidents along Fauntleroy Way

One, a business break-in attempt – the other targeted a car (whose owner is puzzled why the thief/thieves took what they did) – read on for both reports (one includes a photo):

That photo came from Angela at Budget Blinds of West Seattle (WSB sponsor) along with this report:

9pm last night our glass alarm went off and the alarm company contacted the owners Kendra & Parrish Hammer. They rushed to the showroom! It appears that someone attempted to break in by throwing a large rock at the door twice & they took, what seems to be, a crowbar & tried to peel the door open. Thankfully we have a protective film on the glass (as you can see from the pictures) that (deters) break ins! What really shocks us is that this happened at 9pm. The neighborhood is still out & about. People driving on/off the West Seattle Bridge. Fauntleroy is a busy road, even at 9pm. After throwing a large rock a couple times & trying to pry themselves in, it appears they got frustrated & tore out one of our planter boxes. Luckily they were unsuccessful. Although, we do keep everything locked up here!

Budget Blinds’ official address is 3518 SW Genesee, but as you can see on the map if you haven’t passed by before, it’s steps off Fauntleroy. And from a mile south on Fauntleroy, we get this car owner’s report:

My Scion xB was broken into around 5am this morning in (the west side of the 5600 block of) Fauntleroy Way SW [map]. I heard the alarm, and turned on the light, but couldn’t see anything (and wasn’t dressed to go out and confront a burglar!). I can’t figure out how they got in as the doors were locked, no apparent damage to doors or windows. All I can tell they stole was my change cup with about $5 in it and my business cards. If anyone has ideas on what someone can do with business cards, please let me know. Worst part… they SMOKED in my car (which has never been so violated). I can hardly stand to be in it!!!

Ok, I missed a few words, good thing for budget blinds that they had the right kind of glass in their door….

Not surprising about the lack of notice. The downside to protective glass is that there isn’t that unmistakeable din of *shatter*. If there was no one to witness the incident in person, for all anyone within earshot knew, someone could have been hammering something.

Actually, the glass break sensor was triggered on our alarm system, and the roof sirens went off for 4 min (we are thinking about increasing this time to 10 min. but don’t want to make our residential neighbors mad, as they are really loud!) With security film the shatter is still there, it just prevents the glass from caving in and allowing entry.

Wise idea adding the film! Sorry to hear this happening at a “reasonable” hour of evening in a “populated” area of the ‘hood, but, you know, criminals often simply do not apply logic the way “regular” people do. In fact, sometimes striking in broad daylight right in the open is effective because it is the last place “regular” people would expect a crook to be dumb enough to try. Good on you for having that film and an alarm!

To the business card theft. Depending on what they say or what type of business they advertise, they may try to use them to gain access inside offices and/or homes.

Sorry, comment time is over.
