Mysterious Ivar’s sign fished out of Elliott Bay

The WSB Forums have been abuzz about this – and we finally have a link to share from one of the photographers who caught it on camera: An (apparently) old Ivar’s sign fished out of Elliott Bay off West Seattle shores last night. See it here at seattletimes.com. Whether it’s history … is for now a mystery.

I smell something fishy here…the sign is too clean for the amount of time it could possibly have been submerged? The “Ivar’s” section is completely readable and I just don’t believe it…Also, how many divers have been in this area over the years and yet it was just now found? Ivar’s is also promoting some new up and coming chowders on their website…call me a skeptic but something smells of really good chowder here.

When I came to Seattle in the early ’60’s, I recall Ivar giving an interview in which he expressed interest in sinking advertisements into Elliott Bay for the benefit of divers & swimmers. truly, a man of his word…

For those of you calling BS, you must not have lived here when Ivar was around, this is exactly the type of promotion he was capable of. He was a Seattle Icon and native West Seattleite, and a tribute to the man who is still getting his name in print over twenty years after his death. For more info check out this website.
