Duwamish Tribe–In January 2009, the Duwamish Longhouse & Cultural Center was opened to promote and share the heritage of Chief Seattle’s Duwamish Tribe–Seattle’s First People and only native tribe. Duwamish tribal leadership continues unbroken since Chief Seattle. The Longhouse provides a home for the Duwamish people and visible place to declare, “We are still here.” Like traditional potlatch houses, it is a gathering place to which the Duwamish can invite guests.
