More road work! Arbor Heights, south Fauntleroy ‘microsurfacing’ begins today

Another alert from SDOT – the “microsurfacing” work in Arbor Heights (and south Fauntleroy) is under way. You might already have seen the crews doing advance weed-clearing work along the roads in recent days. Here’s a larger map and full info. It’s been seven months since SDOT’s original announcement of this work.

I love when the city remembers Arbor Heights! Can we have sidewalks next pretty please?

I lived in Arbor Heights for 5 years and it was always abundantly clear that the city had no idea this was part of it’s jurisdiction. This may be the first time anything like this has ever been done. Agree, the area needs sidewalks.

What??!!! The crew came to resurface our street (Calif DR SW), and stopped 2/3rds of the way in. Apparently, the first crew didn’t finish the prep work, so it wasn’t ready to be resurfaced. This is a cul de sac! The on site crew manager told us we would have to wait another 5-7years for the next time the neighborhood would be resurfaced. Our street is falling apart. Be warned WS and stay on top of the work being done. We all pay our share of taxes…this is unbelievable.

I have a note into the city now…

Don’t just e-mail – you can also call 206-684-ROAD, and if you don’t get anywhere, remember that Councilmember Tom Rasmussen chairs the Transportation Committee (though you could contact any councilmember in theory to help you with a problem). Let me know if that still doesn’t get anywhere. I really don’t think that if the street is on the schedule, it’s meant to be ignored no matter what the problem … TR

No sidewalks It would just make cars go faster and parking would be worse.

@Shannon, please email details to contact@wwrhah.org.

Our street was done in AH today and it looks great, and we’re very thankful and happy for the improvement! I hope that the rest of California Dr. will get done @shannon, that is terrible–they need to come back and finish it!!

Thanks for the info Tracy. I left a VM for the Crew Chief.
Joe – I forwarded the details for your reference as well. Trying to keep the neighborhood calm while we figure this out…

Why oh why are they spending money on doing this? Arbor Heights has very nice, non-potholed streets, while Roxbury, 35th and Admiral, its like driving an off road course.

Paved how long does it take to dry?

  • Rob August 19, 2014 (7:44 am)

It is nice to them repaving the roads but what don’t under stand is when they do it on a road that doesn’t need it . They went down 44 the and the road surface was just fine . I drove around and most of roads in the area were just fine. You would think in a city screaming for money would pave roads on a strictly needs to be done bases

  • Paved August 19, 2014 (10:22 am)

@clark5080, they say it takes 2-3 hours to dry, which was the length of time they waited after it was finished before they removed the signs, and opened the road again for cars.

Also re: time, we added some info (and an “after” photo) in today’s traffic watch – local resident Kevin M. said it was three hours on his street yesterday between application and reopening.

Was wondering if anyone could elaborate on the process that they follow? We just got the notification that this Friday that they will be closing our entire street for repaving starting at 7. We live on a dead end, and for us to park outside of the paving zone would require us to park 6 or more blocks away from our house. Does anyone know if they have a plan for these scenarios where there is ONLY 1 route for travel?

I am excited about the micro surfacing process, but think this could have been a bit more organized.

I hope Fauntlee Hills is next, our roads are in terrible condition.

The map above, which was delivered to all addresses in Arbor Heights, is NOT accurate. My street is on the map for resurfacing tomorrow, 8/21. Today they put up ‘no parking’ sandwich boards with a date of 8/25. I changed my work schedule so that I could be home with a nervous dog on the construction day. Get your act together, SDOT. How much did it cost us to have these erroneous flyers printed and distributed? I also agree with other posters who say this work is unnecessary. Our roads are a mess; this is a waste of funds.

Tracy can you find out why 108 SW south or the point f ABH are not in the plan ? Thanx. R

In response to comments questioning the need for this work, and comments on missed areas that are in poor condition:

The microsurfacing is strictly a means of extending the life of asphalt pavement still in good repair; it is not effective on pavement which has already failed (or on concrete paving). The microsurfacing is a thin emulsion that, once dry, seals the pavement below from moisture and oxidation. The sealant does not help asphalt surfaces that are already badly cracked or brittle.

SDOT crews spent many hours in Arbor Heights since last fall making spot repairs in advance of the microsurfacing now underway, but there are some areas where the pavement is already too badly degraded for this to help. In these areas the pavement will need to be replaced to its full depth.

So they did my street and all I gotta say is this is done so cheap, it’s not even funny. They did a crappy job smoothing it all out, and now I can already see cracks forming. Can’t wait to see how quick the potholes will show up. Waste of taxpayer money.

Call 206-684-ROAD if you haven’t already, to report it.

Sorry, comment time is over.
