and I heard at least a dozen shots about 10 min ago on Alki around Cactus area … maybe on the beach?

    • AlkiD April 12, 2026 (6:45 am)

We heard the gunshots on Alki at the same time.

    • Dan April 12, 2026 (10:30 am)

We were walking close by at that time, heard and saw obnoxious fireworks.

  • HPneighbor April 11, 2026 (6:49 pm)

Police are knocking on neighbors doors asking for ring camera footage to try and identify the license plate numbers of the black BMW sedan and black Mercedes sedan that were seen fleeing the scene. If you have any information on these cars, please share with police.

    • Christy April 11, 2026 (7:58 pm)

Why is no one else talking about the silver Prius that was also fleeing the scene?Another woman and I both saw the vehicle. She approached me just moments after the shooting and said she had seen one of the gunmen near the Prius at the time it happened. According to her, he was armed and on foot, and it appeared he may have just exited the vehicle. This was around the same time we heard another single gunshot. At the time of the shooting, I was about a block away. I then saw a silver Prius driving away at a high rate of speed from the exact direction of the incident. The back driver-side window was rolled down, and it was clearly leaving the area immediately after the shooting.

Hi – Thanks for noting this.  Please report to SPD using the case number (if you have not already.). This kind of info is helpful.

  • Lola April 11, 2026 (6:56 pm)

Dont know about Highpoint, but I was just at Spud picking up some dinner and we just heard 20 shots across from Spud.  Sorry but WTF??

    • WSB April 11, 2026 (7:03 pm)

Police were dispatched to check that out but I haven’t heard confirmation that it was gunfire. At Alki, fireworks are common too.

  • Rob April 11, 2026 (7:26 pm)

Maybe a more vigorous campaign is needed to apprehend and incarcerate these criminals.  Apparently, the Summer of Safety signs aren’t doing the trick.

    • WestSeattleMom April 12, 2026 (5:52 am)

I agree! Consequences aren’t matching actions and crimes committed.

    • 1994 April 12, 2026 (10:57 pm)

More cameras may help apprehend these cowards. Cameras to identify the cars, people inside or outside the cars…..if no witnesses can identify them maybe cameras can assist.  The cowards need to be stopped before they injure or kill someone.  They need to be held accountable for their poor choices.

  • resident April 11, 2026 (8:12 pm)

Pretty wild as this seems to be a hint into our summer. New turf and drive by shootings while kids are all playing at the park. The fact the cars were not stopped as police were right behind them and we watched it all is very unsettling. Stressful and upsetting for all involved. The more accountability, the better. This is chaos.

    • Mark M April 12, 2026 (12:41 am)

What do you mean? Are you saying the police were present and witnessed the shooting and let the shooters just drive right by?

  • Sonja April 11, 2026 (8:25 pm)

Sounds more like the Summer of Scary.

  • Concerned citizen April 11, 2026 (9:01 pm)

As much as cameras are not wanted by all I think it’s a good idea for all of our safety.

    • Rhonda April 12, 2026 (2:49 am)

Government surveillance cameras have NO business being in a residential neighborhood full of single-family and duplex homes. High Point is an area of families and playgrounds, not a concentration camp.

      • 1994 April 12, 2026 (11:02 pm)

Wild gunfire has NO business being in residential neighborhoods full of single family or multi-family homes. High Point is an area of families and playgrounds and NO one has business firing guns in residential areas or any area of the city.  Cameras do not make High Point or any area a concentration camp.  What makes a neighborhood turn into a concentration camp is a bunch of idiots terrorizing people to the point they may not want to be outside or even live in such a violent neighborhood.

    • CameraSecurity April 12, 2026 (9:07 am)

While cameras might offer a fleeting sense of security, they rarely prevent impulsive acts of violence like drive-by shootings and often pose a greater risk to the privacy of law-abiding residents. In incidents involving masked suspects or tinted getaway cars, surveillance provides little actionable evidence, yet the infrastructure remains in place to monitor the daily movements of innocent neighbors. This “mission creep” often leads to the technology being repurposed for minor revenue-generating infractions or invasive data collection, creating a permanent state of surveillance that treats every citizen like a suspect without actually making the streets any safer.

      • Peter S. April 12, 2026 (10:19 am)

@CS:  Although it’s completely fair to have concerns about what the technology might be used for, it’s also fair that many of us would prefer that police have as many tools as possible to apprehend those responsible for dangerous criminal behavior.  I hope you never travel to major cities in Europe or elsewhere where constant real-time surveillance is a given.

You could make the same argument about the ALPR cameras used for road tolling.  Strange that they’ve been  exempted from this “pause”, isn’t it?

        • K April 12, 2026 (11:39 am)

Many studies have been done that show the cameras do not prevent crime, and do not improve solve rates when crimes are committed.  It would be one thing if we were weighing the loss of privacy against an improvement in either of these areas, but we are not.  Road tolling cameras have a proven net positive result: tolls.

Government owned or controlled surveillance cameras require us to trade our privacy and risk abuses of info in exchange for a false sense of security. Not worth it.

I dare you to cite your source for this. This is beyond fake news with no references cited AT ALL. I’ll help you out though. From the Office of Justice Programs

            Research Summary

We report on the findings of an updated systematic review and meta-analysis of the effects of closed-circuit television (CCTV) surveillance cameras on crime. The findings show that CCTV is associated with a significant and modest decrease in crime. The largest and most consistent effects of CCTV were observed in car parks. The results of the analysis also demonstrated evidence of significant crime reductions within other settings, particularly residential areas. CCTV schemes incorporating active monitoring generated larger effect sizes than did passive systems. Schemes deploying multiple interventions alongside CCTV generated larger effect sizes than did schemes deploying single or no other interventions alongside CCTV.

            Policy Implications

The results of this systematic review—based on 40 years of evaluation research—lend support for the continued use of CCTV to prevent crime as well as reveal a greater understanding of some of the key mechanisms of effective use. Of particular salience is the continued need for CCTV to be narrowly targeted on vehicle crimes and property crime and not be deployed as a “stand-alone” crime prevention measure. As CCTV surveillance continues to expand its reach in both public and private space and evolve with new technology, policy will benefit from high-quality evaluations of outcomes and implementation.

        • Sonja April 12, 2026 (1:54 pm)

Peter, many of those European cities with cameras everywhere are police states where you’re guilty until proven innocent and there’s no 4th Amendment like we enjoy here in the USA.

          • Peter S. April 13, 2026 (9:44 am)

London, Frankfurt, Vienna, Paris are NOT police states.  They’re not even *in* police states.

          • K April 13, 2026 (11:38 am)

Peter S, let’s look at cities in the US, so we’re comparing places with similar gun laws.  Atlanta is one of the most surveilled cities in the WORLD, more than any European city you listed, and they still have higher crime rates than the national average.

        • CameraSecurity April 12, 2026 (8:57 pm)

The fundamental issue isn’t a lack of footage, but a lack of investigative capacity; giving the police more “tools” is irrelevant if they currently lack the resources or directive to follow up on the evidence they already have. We see this in the tolling example: the technology is incredibly efficient at automated revenue collection from law-abiding citizens, yet it consistently fails to stop violent criminals who simply use stolen plates or tinted windows to disappear. If we continue to trade our privacy for high-tech surveillance while the underlying issues of police response and accountability remain unaddressed, are we actually buying safety, or are we just paying to be watched?

  • Ve April 11, 2026 (9:07 pm)

One reason not to do away with any type of surveillance cameras  or any means to help police

    • Feel April 12, 2026 (5:49 pm)

The city currently has surveillance cameras and they don’t seem to have prevented this crime or helped the cops catch those responsible.

  • Seattlite April 11, 2026 (9:28 pm)

QUESTIONS:  1.   How did West Seattle and Greater Seattle get to the point of gun shots being fired in residential neighborhoods, on the streets?  2.   How did Seattle get to the point of not having a fully staffed police force for years?  3.   How much more of the wild, out-of-control firing of guns in WS are Seattleites going to take?   4.  When will Seattle’s SPD get a handle on catching, arresting, charging, and putting these miscreants behind bars?  5.  How long before innocents are caught in the crossfire?

  • Neighbor April 11, 2026 (11:52 pm)

Why do we understaff the police force in these crime-prone areas? High Point should have a much larger police presence to help put an end to the rampant crime.

    • Seattlite April 12, 2026 (7:52 am)

Seattle has a police officer shortage is the short answer to your question.

  • Witness April 12, 2026 (5:06 am)

I will say, the police arrived quickly after people started reporting the incident. Always remember to call it in.

  • flimflam April 12, 2026 (7:58 am)

And the city will shrug its shoulders and promise to look into it.

    • Citizen Joe April 14, 2026 (5:14 pm)

I’m still waiting for Saka’s street lights 🙄

  • HP Resident April 12, 2026 (8:01 am)

A few strategically placed Flock or other type of camera systems in HighPoint would greatly reduce their ability to get away every time. IMO stopping these shooting dangers for our families outweighs privacy concerns here. This happened ~50 yards from a park that had at least 6 or so kids playing in it at the time.

    • Another HP Resident April 12, 2026 (12:04 pm)

I was so, so worried about the kids at the park when I read where this happened 💔 Our 7yo was two blocks away, heard everything, and didn’t sleep last night. While everyone is shrugging their shoulders, children are being traumatized in real time.

    • Luna Lady April 12, 2026 (1:09 pm)

HP Resident – Cameras would do nothing to stop these brazen, violent criminals. They did this in broad daylight despite a large police station down the street and an entire neighborhood full of witnesses. There are only a few escape points out of West Seattle due to it being a peninsula surrounded by water but they still easily disappeared despite good descriptions of the vehicles.

      • WSzombie April 13, 2026 (5:10 pm)

Do you know how many black BMWs and Mercedes there are in Seattle??? lmaoAt least cameras could get license plates, direction of travel, number of criminals, etc.

  • Dog Whisperer April 12, 2026 (9:51 am)

It might be time to do something.

  • Capt. Obvious April 12, 2026 (6:42 pm)

Republicans have flooded the U.S. with half a billion guns, now they complain that Democratic leaders of big cities like Seattle must DO SOMETHING about the proliferation of gun violence. Unbelievable.

  • Resident April 13, 2026 (9:18 am)

Edit to previous comment. About 10 shots fired around 12:45am this morning, Monday April 12th. SPD responded and searched the area. Heard near Chief Sealth, but im unsure at how close.

    • WSB April 13, 2026 (9:46 am)

I was still working during that dispatch; no report of evidence being found in that case, so gunfire not confirmed.

Sorry, comment time is over.
