WEST SEATTLE CRIME WATCH: Smash-and-grab robbery at Westwood Village Big 5

This morning we have the report narrative for a smash-and-grab robbery that happened Tuesday night at the Westwood Village Big 5 Sporting Goods store. Here’s what police say happened at the store shortly before its scheduled 8 pm closing time; the report says it was not originally reported/dispatched as a robbery:

On 12/9/25 at 1942 hours I was working uniformed patrol with Officer XXXX as 3F2 in the city of Seattle when we were dispatched to 2600 SW Barton St (Big 5 Sporting Goods) in reference to a disturbance. The call was dispatched as follows, “j/o [just occurred], susp broke window, customer has gun and kicked susp out of blding.”

Dispatch provided the following description of the suspects, “WM, WHI BEANIE, BLU MEDICAL MASK, BLK JACKET, BLU JEANS 2) WM, GRY MASK, BLK JACKET, BLU JEANS.”

Upon arrival I spoke with two Big 5 employees, XXXX and XXXX, who were present during the incident. They stated that two suspects entered the store wearing masks, gloves, and hooded jackets. XXXX added that she saw the suspects were armed with a knife, crowbar, and a glass/window breaker. After entering the store, the suspects walked toward the airsoft/BB gun section. XXXX and XXXX did not have any verbal contact with the suspects, both backed away when they entered. XXXX stated that she did not attempt to contact them out of fear of being assaulted, due to the suspects possessing weapons.

The suspects then shattered a display window and began loading several BB/pellet/airsoft firearms into a suitcase. In total the suspects took six BB pistols and two BB double barrel shotguns. The total value of the stolen merchandise is $884.92. …

W/XXXX was shopping in the BB gun section of Big 5 during this incident. He was no longer on scene and contacted by phone. XXXX stated that he saw the suspects break the display window and place merchandise into a suitcase. Similarly to XXXX stated he observed the suspects were in possession of weapons, a knife and a baton/”billy club.” XXXX stated that one of the suspects began reaching toward his waistline and pockets. At this point XXXX stated he drew his firearm in order to protect himself and the employees as he thought the suspect could be reaching for a weapon.

XXXX then began giving the suspects verbal commands, “get out of the store, stop what you are doing” and “put your hands up”. He then directed the employees to retrieve a less-lethal defensive tool such as pepper spray, but they did not have any. XXXX stated that one suspect did not react and continued placing merchandise into the suitcase. The other suspect put his up and said, “ok bro, ok bro.” The suspects then exited the store with the suitcase of unpaid-for merchandise. XXXX statements were congruent with security video and statements made by employees.

I established probable cause for RCW 9A.56.200 – Robbery 1 for the suspects given they were unlawfully taking property in the presence of a victim who expressed fear of injury, fear that the suspects used to obtain possession of the property.

A shorter SPD summary says police looked around the area for the robbers but did not call for a K-9: “Weather conditions and time delay made a K-9 track impractical.” If you have any information on this robbery, the SPD incident number is 25-360795.

I’m confused. The report says the call came it at 7:42 AM… Big 5 doesn’t open until 9:30. How did all this happen two hours before opening?

    • WSB December 11, 2025 (11:32 am)

No, it says “1942 hours” – that’s 7:42 pm. (Emergency services use the 24-hour clock, which starts at midnight. 7:42 am would be 0742 hours.)

I get the sense that these guys thought Big 5 sold firearms, and I hoping they were really upset when they learned they ran away with… 884.92 worth of BB guns. Glad nobody was physically injured over such a dumb crime.

Nah, they knew what they were after. Those Airsoft guns look exactly like the real thing, and they weren’t after them as Christmas presents for their nephews. I’m guessing they’d likely be used in more street crime robberies, with potentially a lesser sentence if caught. / But a BIG shoutout to the brave citizen who intervened on the behalf of the employees. In this crazy state that’s no small thing, as anyone with a concealed weapons permit who actually uses it in the defense of self or others is most certainly placing placing a target on themselves by the state.

No one should have to live in a state they think is “crazy.” I’m sorry you are stuck here, and I hope you can leave soon.

Born here, raised here, still live here and I’d rather people like Good Job! live in my crazy state, and it is crazy now, but we can fix that by not allowing crazy to continue.

OUTSTANDING WORK to the legally-armed citizen who intervened to protect the employees. Those Airsoft replica firearms absolutely look like real guns, even at very close inspection. It’s almost certain that they will be used to threaten other victims in future robberies so it’s a shame that the perpetrators weren’t apprehended. The cover of darkness during that sideways, in-your-face rain was the absolute worst conditions to attempt an area search.

I disagree with the “legally armed citizen”s escalation to firearm.
What if he shot the guy they reported “began reaching for his waistline and pockets”?
A shooting, perhaps death over shoplifting, likely by juveniles?

What’s the point of escalating to firearms when, as reported and confirmed, one suspect ignored the gunman’s demands and continue scooping up the loot?

All of this gun waving led to the same results, with the thieves walking out with their legally marketed toy replica weapons.

I am relieved that no shots were fired, no one was injured.

    • Rhonda December 12, 2025 (12:55 am)

Gunnie, this was NOT “shoplifting”, it was violent, class-A felony robbery involving deadly weapons and force due to the knife and crowbar. Robbery is one of the leading causes of homicides. Any one of those employees or customers could’ve been stabbed or bludgeoned at any moment, taken hostage, etc.

      • K December 12, 2025 (9:30 am)

But they weren’t and the robber completely ignored the “good guy with a gun”, kept about his business, and got away with a suitcase full of BB guns, so i’m not entirely sure what your point is, or what you’re excited about.

        • Rhonda December 12, 2025 (11:30 am)

K, the armed customer drove one robber to surrender and run away and the other to leave with what items he already had. If they had not been interrupted they could’ve stole nearby boxes of handgun, rifle, and shotgun ammo for real firearms and countless knives and machetes in the same display cases. They weren’t going to stop their rampage for an unarmed employee or customer.

          • Gunnie December 12, 2025 (2:11 pm)

            Could have to would have?
Your scenario is pure conjecture and inconsistent with police and witnesses accounting.
The suspects judging by what they took, were after replica guns not ammo or lethal weapons.

            No suspect surrendered.
One ignored the commands of the guy intervening with gun and continued to load his loot.
The other suspect bided his time while his partner was looting, by agreeing to leave and leaving. Here is the report- “XXXX stated that one suspect did not react and continued placing merchandise into the suitcase. The other suspect put his up and said, “ok bro, ok bro.” The suspects then exited the store with the suitcase of unpaid-for merchandise. XXXX statements were congruent with security video and statements made by employees.”

            Also for Ferns’ comment.

Gunnie you are the inconsistent one here.  You pose what-ifs for the good guy but not the criminals.  You ask what if he shot someone while they were committing a crime and further speculate about them being minors with ZERO evidence but you fail to ask what if the same criminals stabbed someone?  You are clearly blinded by your bias.

          • Gunnie December 12, 2025 (6:24 pm)

            OK Neighbor.
            Lets conjecture.
In this scenario, the thieves had entered and employees stood down while they broke display cases and took their play guns and play ammo.
Yes they could then stop their looting and go stab and club Big 5 employees.
That is possible and if it rose to that level, deadly force would be warranted.

I speculate that the video shows no one had knife to their throat and no mention was made of the armed citizen rescuing the employees.
There are no reports of “smash and grabs” resulting in murder in the USA, so this would be a first.
There are multiple examples of armed civiliansshooting at suspects but hitting innocent bystanders.
My bias is against firearms that kill about 125 Americans every day, proving us uniquely stupid in civilized society.

          • k December 12, 2025 (6:45 pm)

Rhonda, the narrative said he ignored the gunman and continued putting merchandise in the suitcase.  Unless you’re suggesting the police officer is lying, they didn’t just leave with what they already had.  He continued to steal more, even after being presented with the firearm.

        • Ferns December 12, 2025 (11:34 am)

You are incorrect and should reread the police report. Most of the suspects DID stop what they were doing and STOPPED reaching for a further weapon. As you say, no one actually was hurt by the legally armed citizen. So it’s a moot point in your view. I’m actually shocked at how incredibly responsible and reasonable the armed citizen behaved, waiting for a necessary moment to get involved, and seeking a non-lethal means of subduing the ongoing threat with pepper spray. Go whine elsewhere. This is a good example of responsible gun owner behavior in an emergency. The person didn’t play Rambo or the hero.

What about the incident at Jefferson Square with the break in?  I haven’t seen any blog mention of that.

    • WSB December 12, 2025 (12:28 am)

Do you mean the damaged storefront on the inner east side? Unintended crash (accelerator hit instead of brake), not burglary. Crash happened at 10:47 am Tuesday. I missed it because we were at the Food Bank covering the Nucor donation and nobody texted (it wasn’t a major callout so it didn’t catch my eye when I checked the log upon return) – TR

We need more armed citizens. Good job on the part of the guy that was legally carrying.

  • TRAN VU December 13, 2025 (11:07 am)

    I can’t believe that happened at WESTWOOD….
