WEST SEATTLE CRIME WATCH: 4th grader’s bicycle stolen (Saturday update: his mom recovers it)

Maybe you’ll find Matt B‘s son’s bicycle, dumped in your neighborhood …

This 20” olive green Novara bike that belongs to my 4th grader was stolen from our place today near 37th and Cambridge. It was taken from our driveway between 2:30 and 4:45. They threw my kid’s helmet on the ground. The rear fender was no longer on it. Just in case it turns up somewhere … he doesn’t know it’s missing yet and will be heartbroken.

SATURDAY: See comments for the saga of how the bike owner’s mom got it back.

Hi Dylan, I’m Regina (wife of Matt B and mom of kid with stolen bike). Thank you so much for offering up this replacement bike. Is it a 20″ frame? If so, I would be interested. I also just have to say that comments and offers like yours are restoring my faith in humanity after this!

So it was my kid’s bike stolen. My wife was walking the dog just now and  saw a white kid in an army green hoodie, looked like he had a buzz cut growing out, kid was too big for the bike, riding my kid’s bike down the street around 37th and cloverdale. She yelled at him repeatedly and he didn’t stop. She had our little dog and couldn’t follow or anything. Just now happened. Find this little dirtbag! Thanks to those who’ve offered bikes, too! My kid would like this bike back.

The City needs to make bike thieves accountable, time behind bars and made to pay restitution to the victims.

Believe it or not, my wife, who I always knew was a badass but is now a Certified Badass, got the bike back. Yesterday she was headed to Target, so the same afternoon after seeing the person with the bike in the morning, and guess who she saw pushing the bike up Barton St? So she pulled over and said “You have to give me that bike right now!” And the person dropped it. And then my wife, who in addition to being a Certified Badass is also a caring and empathetic person, noticed the thief was in rough shape–maybe an unhoused 19 year old, with clothes to match. So she then asked the thief if they needed help! Which they declined to receive. And believe it or not, this is the second time my wife has seen someone riding our stolen bike. The first time was over 20 years ago, in another city and another state, not too long after we met, when she bought me a cool Diamondback BMX bike for my birthday. We went for a ride around the neighborhood and back to her house. Brought our bikes inside the fenced yard…and my BMX was stolen. Then she saw the kid riding it down the street later on and ran after him, but he just pedaled away. So, I guess she is 1 for 2 in recovering stolen bicycle vigilantism.

Good for her in demanding the bike back, sorry this happened but happy to hear it was resolved. So tired so thieves stealing anything and everything – a small childs bike is lower than low.

The stolen bike chop shop that was in the bushes by the Westwood post office is now back on SW Trenton at, or at least it was at the end of August (Haven’t been out much lately)

There was one RV back for a while on Trenton. It’s been gone for at least a few days now (still gone as of my pass through the area at 9:30 this morning(

Sorry, comment time is over.
