WEST SEATTLE CRIME WATCH: Admiral gunfire investigation (updated Friday afternoon)

11:03 PM: 911 has dealt with two waves of calls about suspected gunfire this past hour or so. The first, in the Alki area, was determined by police to be fireworks. But the most recent, in Admiral, was just confirmed as gunfire. Police report finding at least two shell casings in the 2700 block of 44th SW [vicinity map], which is just south of Lafayette Elementary. No injuries or property damage reported so far.

12:54 AM: No further info on this. As always, we’ll be following up with police later today and will add any additional information we obtain.

FRIDAY AFTERNOON UPDATE: We have the police-report narrative:

At 2251 hours I was dispatched to a report of a shooting in the vicinity of [3000 BLK] 45 Ave SW. The following information was provided by dispatch.

“J/O, 6 SHOTS FROM THE EAST”

There were additional 911 calls reporting additional shots being heard as well as racing vehicles. The reports consistently placed the shots/vehicles moving to the east toward the West Seattle Bridge.

No one was reporting having seen any suspects or vehicles and no one was reporting any injury or property damage.

I checked the surrounding are with other Officers. Other Officers located [MULTIPLE] XXXX fired cartridge casings in the 2700 block of 44 Ave SW. The casings were in the middle of the street. No damage or injured persons were located in the vicinity. Some neighbors stepped out and advised they had not seen the shooting. Their cameras did not record.

The report concludes with the officer writing that they photographed the scene and collected the casings to submit into evidence.

Heard 3 pops followed by 3 more about 30 seconds in between. Was just walking my dog near 45th. Scary.

We heard the same. Sounded like it was right outside our window.

I heard the same string of fire you did.  I’m on 47th/ SW Stevens.  It sounded like it was right outside my house.

I heard 2 shots with another two shots with about 5 seconds in between.  Sounded close like it was right outside my door.  Close to 47th/ SW Stevens

    Where’s the police?

    • WSB August 28, 2025 (11:49 pm)

The police are who found the shell casings.

I heard the two clusters of “pops” way too close for comfort as I was nearing PCC and feared they were gun shots. Police car was slowly driving north down 44th with bright lights on as I left PCC.

Our windows were open and we heard them at 45th and Charlestown.

How many reports of gunfire in West Seattle need to take place before consideration is given to installing technology like Shot Spotter? If used properly, it could give our great officers at SPD the opportunity to actually find the shooters rather than just responding to the scene to find shell casings. If you have a better solution, I’d love to hear about it!

    • My two cents August 29, 2025 (10:19 am)

There appears to be a disconnect between what ‘ShotSpotter’ says it can do versus actual results (relied on Wikipedia entry for information and citations).

Shot Spotter doesn’t provide any more useful data to police than “earwitnesses” who call 911. Human callers can describe cars speeding away, descriptions of events leading up to shots like arguments, clothing, etc. Further, if someone hears what they think are shots and then sees fireworks rising up one street over they won’t report a shooting to 911. But Shot Spotter will and waste precious SPD resources.

Thank you for the glimpse into reality!
