WEST SEATTLE HOLIDAY SCENE: Junction flag volunteers

(WSB photos)

The West Seattle Junction was decked with the Stars and Stripes today, thanks to volunteers recruited by the Junction Association. We were passing through The Junction on the way to cover the West Seattle Fourth of July Kids’ Parade in North Admiral when we saw the group gathered for their briefing:

Many of The Junction’s community events rely on volunteers – Summer Fest (one week away!) still has some openings, for example.

Lack of flags on buildings and homes is just weird during 4th of July . Such a strong anti~USA sentiment in WS and in Seattle, in general.

Where the country is headed is more important to me than a symbolic piece of fabric.  Don’t make facile assumptions of people as “anti-USA” if they aren’t flying a flag because they might surprise you on a number of issues and/or you might be forced to revisit your own assumptions and beliefs.  While I believe in the humane and decent treatment of every human being without exception, vis a vis immigration enforcement,  my views on the detrimental effects of immigration  – illegal and legal – for example, are probably far different than most out protesting yesterday.   On the flip side, did our founders envision an imperial America, with a military presence in every nook and cranny of the world, spending more than China, Russian, Britain, Germany and a number of other countries combined, sending federal troops to quell unrest in civilian America? Stuff to think about.
