WEST SEATTLE CRIME WATCH: Mail theft victim shares lessons learned

Reader report sent by CW:

Around 7 am on June 21, 2025, someone with the master key broke into the USPS mail boxes for our townhome complex and stole everyone’s mail.

This incident was not the first time our cluster box unit (CBU) had been broken into. Around 6:30 am on November 27, 2024, someone with a master key broke into our CBU, but during that break-in, an image of the mail thief was captured by a door camera.

After the second incident, we decided to reach out to the U.S. Postal Service, to ask if our CBU could be re-keyed.

A supervisor at the West Seattle branch informed me that it would be impossible to re-key our CBU because all CBUs sharing the same zip code have the same master key, and all of the CBUs in our area would need to be re-keyed.

The supervisor recommended calling and filing a report with the US Postal Inspection Service at 877-876-2455, option 3.

There’s also an option of filing the report online at mail theft.uspis.gov

While searching the Internet for information, we learned why it’s important to report stolen mail to the US Postal Inspection Service.

There are over 139,000 mail collection bins and 16.5 million CBUs in use across the country, and the U.S. Postal Service is planning to strategically replace only 49,000 traditional locks with higher-security electronic locks, in areas identified as high postal-crime areas.

With USPS master key fetching $1,000 to $7,000 on the dark web, we don’t see mail theft going away any time soon.

We wanted to share the above information with the other residents of West Seattle so they would know whom to call if their mail is stolen.

If you have any tips for the USPIS, CW says the confirmation numbers they received for these two incidents are 38105618 and 38105621.

Sorry this happened to you—what neighborhood are you in?

The US Postal Service is a joke; the reply basically says that you are sol because we can’t afford to change.  I go out of my way NOT to have anything important be touched by the USPS.  I actively shop at businesses that don’t use the USPS. My expectations for the USPS IS questionable delivery service and even worse customer service, I simply don’t expect any USPS delivery to arrive in a timely manner.  I don’t complain to USPS if something goes missing, I just call the business I bought stuff from for a replacement.  I have never had any pushback from a business after I say why did you trust the USPS to do the job?  I have never heard a company defend the USPS as reliable, they just send another package.  If you care about your deliveries, make sure it doesn’t go via USPS.

And I have had similar experiences with the commercial delivery services also. They are ALL prone to package loss, misrouting, delays, poor customer service, and of course, theft.

There is evidence that the USPS has been neglected for many years, more recently in favor of private sector competitors.

CW, what is your zip code?  Those of us who might live in the same one would have a further heads up to be on guard. Thank you for all the info and I’m sorry that keeps happening to you.

We asked about their neighborhood. “Between the Admiral and Alaska Junctions.”

So you have nothing delivered? In case you haven’t noticed UPS and FEDEX have packages stolen/misdeliverd/damaged in transit. But have to ask why your hatred of the post office. I’ve never had an issue and have never heard anyone with such an aversion to the USPS.

I put my mail on hold during a 3 week vacation and when I returned nothing was ever delivered from that time. All that mail, gone. After speaking with the local postmaster his response was merely,  “What do you expect from a free service?” I too have an aversion toward the USPS. I also now have informed delivery, however several times mail was not delivered even though I received a photo of the item in an email, and retrieved my mail right after the carrier walked away. Where does this stuff go?

I live in the north end of WS and use the California Ave post office. I’ve NEVER had an issue with my carrier/delivery or staff at the office. Vacation holds have been no issue. I live in an apartment and pick up my mail every day and never have had a problem with theft. What isn’t there can’t be stolen.

Our regular mail carrier is the best, he’s always delivering at the same time everyday on the days that he works and boy do you know it when he is off or on vacation!

I can’t speak for apartments/commercial but our mail residential carrier and his subs are fantastic. We have our mail held at least 3-4 times per year and haven’t had any issues.
