UPDATE: Fire on west edge of Westcrest Park

(WSB photos unless otherwise credited)

7:06 PM: Firefighters are at 8th SW/SW Trenton right now, working to put out a “brush fire” on the west edge of Westcrest Park. The smoke was visible for miles as we headed there to check it out. Flames charred the slope at the Trenton street end too, west of a park retaining wall, close to apartment buildings.

Fireworks? 911 callers were reporting “booms.” Police are there investigating, too.

8:02 PM: An hour and a half after the first SFD crew arrived, the last one just left. Thanks to D for photo we’ve added above, showing why the smoke was visible from afar -leaping flames at one point.

Please stop setting off fireworks in Westcrest. It is completely dry and a huge fire hazard. This is the third or fourth brush fire we’ve had in the last month.

Fireworks. Teenagers, 3 vehicles. Laughed at as they drove away while we dealt with fire fighters and police.

Could they have also set the porta potty on fire at Highland Holden?

I rollerbladed over an unused firework today on Alki trail and it exploded under my skate.  I was not injured just freaked out.  This needs to stop.

If it was small enough for you to rollerblade over and it didn’t make you crash, I’m 100% sure it couldn’t have injured you.  😉

Tracey could have been startled and fallen off their skates and been injured, but sure, go ahead and downplay it. So condescending.

Fireworks enforcement is an absolute joke. It’s been over a week of nightly explosions that scare our pets and keep us up into the wee hours of the morning. King County (and Seattle to a lesser extent) should be ashamed of how poorly they enforce fireworks. They should be locking up these arsonists to send a message.

Agreed. Still going off like crazy in Arbor Heights. Always the same people, same location, year after year. Yet here we are.

But have YOU actually called the police,  or are you just expecting them to just show up.

King County (White Center) doesn’t respond to police calls. They’ll issue a ticket after the fact if you’re willing to testify. A complete joke in a neighborhood that desperately needs more police intervention across the board.

This all boils down to having no respect for anything, even themselves.

We had same problem here of same house, every year setting off fireworks before and after the 4th. All the neighbors coordinated a call to police ( 6 callers)  and amazingly they came, ticket issued and problem solved. This was 2019 though.

Saw this while walking my pup yesterday. I will never understand how people can treat parks like this.

If there was any kind of meaningful enforcement of fireworks violations, some of the fines might actually offset the cost of the tremendous damage they do – including what it costs to have the fire department running around putting out fires.  Since neither the city nor SPD gives a rat’s ***, make the bottom line about money.  How many taxpayer dollars does it cost to do nothing?

Call City Council and demand action. We should not tolerate the risk of fire in our neighborhoods.

Sorry, comment time is over.
