UPDATE: Hundreds join streetcorner protests at 20+ intersections in West Seattle

1:07 PM: So far we’ve been from Morgan Junction…

… to the north end of The Junction…

… and we’ve seen hundreds of protesters on a dozen streetcorners, midway through a planned two-hour protest of various actions the Trump Administration has taken or might take. Next, we’re traveling the rest of California Ave.

1:20 PM: Just did that, and counted another dozen intersections with protesters at multiple corners, ending at Admiral Way.

1:53 PM: Just made it up to Highland Park and a group is at 16th/Holden as announced.

2:25 PM: The photos above were all taken by us from our car window, at stoplights. We’re back at HQ now and below we’ll be adding other photos a bit later this afternoon.

ADDED 3:07 PM: Above, Dave White‘s photo from Walk-All Ways; below, Bucky Hayes-McQueen‘s photo from Admiral/California:

ADDED 5:15 PM: Below are photos from WSB contributor Dave Gershgorn, who went to several of the locations:

The protests were organized by West Seattle Indivisible.

On my way there. May we prevail.

    • onion April 19, 2025 (1:57 pm)

As I walked along California between Stevens and Admiral I also heard and saw a lot of car horns and waves in support of the  sign bearers. Thank you, everyone who participated.

    • BJG April 19, 2025 (4:40 pm)

Was there at the last demonstration. Couldn’t go today, but so happy to see West Seattle represent! Excited to hear the sounds of free speech and see our freedom to gather is still available. Thanks to all for the signs and the two hours of your Saturday. It matters. If we care we are all going to need to be getting louder.

      • Grateful protester in WSea April 19, 2025 (4:58 pm)

        Well said, BJG, well said.

      • LP April 19, 2025 (8:00 pm)

Well said. Hope to be in your company at the next one!

  • Clark April 19, 2025 (1:39 pm)

I’m all for the protesting, I’m behind them but the constant honking is awfully annoying.

    • Vee April 19, 2025 (2:37 pm)

I have to agree , blocking the sidewalks and loud honking was too much, made the mistake of going for a walk, had to detour, don’t get me wrong , I support cause but way too loud

      • BreadCats April 19, 2025 (3:36 pm)

Too loud? Our rights are being stripped as we descend to fascism and you complain you had to reroute and it was too loud? I’m sorry, but this is incredibly tone deaf. You can survive a little inconvenience.

      • AccidentofBirthUSsolucky April 19, 2025 (4:43 pm)

But Vee – how to protest, but where people are?  It’s not an everyday thing.  Perhaps it would have been better for you,  yes, to take a different path, in support?  (you know, I doubt Paul Revere enjoyed the rough path of his midnight ride.  Or Washington’s men crossing the Delaware R in the cold stealth of night.  Or the poor people being bombed in their homes in Ukraine. In Gaza. In alltheplacesmainmediadoesnotcover.  Taking a detour path one day, is it really too much to ask?

    • Keephonking April 19, 2025 (2:44 pm)

What a privilege thing to say while thousands and millions are suffering under this administration. These protest and community gatherings will continue so get use to it.

      • El Clave April 19, 2025 (2:53 pm)

Not very inclusive of you. I guess you get to decide everyone’s opinions now?

      • Vee April 19, 2025 (3:04 pm)

Has nothing to do with privilegeWe are all suffering under the administration Do not judge

        • AN April 19, 2025 (3:59 pm)

You might consider a more expansive definition of “privilege”. It doesn’t mean only money.

        • Alki resident April 19, 2025 (4:36 pm)

Speak for yourself. We aren’t all suffering, including over 7 million who voted for this administration. Pretty dramatic to say we’re all suffering.

          • Bobby z April 19, 2025 (6:45 pm)

            It’s called misery loves company.

          • Kat April 19, 2025 (10:58 pm)

With all due respect, yes, everyone is suffering. The devastation that this regime has unleashed on the environment, for one example, will certainly affect everyone, including those who gave it its power.

          • AlkiResident3 April 20, 2025 (8:13 am)

Including the 7mill? How do you know they are not suffering now because of their decision. Or have regrets? Are you blind and not see the destruction him and his thugs have created already in their first 100 days. What a very ignorant comment.

      • Jolyn April 19, 2025 (10:10 pm)

A modicum of empathy can be spared for some who really can’t bear a lot of noise, I think. Maybe a teaspoon or a pinch? It wouldn’t be smart to move the protests though.

    • Wit April 19, 2025 (3:15 pm)

Real protests are loud and empowering. Silent protests are about ase practical as swimming in a pool minus the water. Sorry we ruined you day though.

    • Sue April 19, 2025 (3:17 pm)

Imagine what it’s like for those of us who live near 16th/Holden. It’s been 5 years of this noise every Tuesday (and formerly Tuesday and Thursday).

      • Grateful protester in WSea April 20, 2025 (6:14 pm)

That is, really, indeed, too much.  16th/Holden Protesters:  Can we not help, WSea-ites?

PLEASE MOVE protests away from 16th/Holden. The people we are harming,  do not deserve this thoughtlessness.  There are def other areas, just as or even more visible- a rotation would at least provide respite.  IF WE, as protesters, can be so callous to others, why in the world should we expect better treatment from whomever we try to demand it from?  EVERYONE Please, can we not get more creative?   Repetitive – even with different messages – loses impact.  Even if the cause/org is different!

        • Jackie April 20, 2025 (7:53 pm)

Good luck. I’ve asked them for years to find somewhere else, or, as you suggested, at least rotate. They aren’t interested in it. It seems like the more frustration I’ve voiced to them, the more it commits them to the course of action as if I’m the enemy in any of this. It’s so disrespectful and so alienating, which seems like the opposite of what one would want from a “galvanizing” protest. My husband and I (both of us are minorities) are planning on listing our house in June and moving away from 17/Holden. We just can’t take it anymore. Thanks for honking for us, though. Even if we explicitly asked for the opposite.

    • WS Res April 19, 2025 (3:53 pm)

I agree! Protests should be silent so as not to bother others. /s

      • Honk April 19, 2025 (4:54 pm)

Thanks for all the HONKING!! It was great to be out there, & see ALL the others with their signs & noise making!!! Honk, honk, honk

    • 22blades April 19, 2025 (9:22 pm)

January 6th was a real “annoying” bit of “tourism”. This ain’t a bake sale.

  • Toni Reineke April 19, 2025 (2:30 pm)

Thank you, WSB! Couldn’t go due to a migraine, so your coverage is very much valued!

    • WSB April 19, 2025 (2:37 pm)

I didn’t plan on traveling the whole route to look – one of our contributing photographers had been planning to check it out – but after a busy morning had to go from here to The Junction on a time-sensitive errand anyway, and upon seeing the turnout, realized it was a “happening now” story so I took stoplight photos and pulled over to post via phone – TR

      • Grateful protester in WSea April 19, 2025 (4:48 pm)

TR  you are a WSea Community Treasure!  Beloved would not be going too far.  The glue that makes our neighborhood special.  (These expressions are not only mine; and similar shared just today nbsp;  Thank you!!

  • Elizabeth April 19, 2025 (2:36 pm)

Thank you to those who turned out today.  Do the next right thing,  Be the Paul Revere of your community. If you can’t be Paul, be the ones who stayed at home banging drums to warn the next house of the emergency that was rising. We all have a part to play in ensuring our democracy remains strong.

  • Lauren April 19, 2025 (2:40 pm)

Way to go, West Seattle! Proud of our community today 🇺🇸

  • Pam Mandel April 19, 2025 (2:41 pm)

Shout out to the California Ave neighbor who was blasting the Woody Guthrie out their windows. We noticed. You rule.

    • WS Res April 19, 2025 (3:54 pm)

Excellent, more people should know Woody and his music. I play him and Utah Phillips every Labor Day, all day.

It makes me happy to see people finally getting out and saying something as a united group. The westbound section of the West Seattle Bridge is finally getting the attention it deserves and might finally get fixed.

  • Dm April 19, 2025 (3:43 pm)

So proud of and encouraged by West Seattle today!

  • Meeeeee April 19, 2025 (3:50 pm)

To those complaining about the noise–we won’t prevail over the cruelty, stupidity, misogony, racism, and criminality unless noise is made.                                                                                         Now is not the time for quiet resistance.

  • Lee April 19, 2025 (3:57 pm)

So proud of the hundreds (if not thousands) who stood up today. Thank you to West Seattle Indivisible for organizing this protest!

  • B April 19, 2025 (4:03 pm)

I am thankful to all of the people who participated in the protest today, and to WSB for covering it.  I think that many people don’t fully grasp how seriously wrong things are in DC right now, and these protests at least help to spread awareness.  I’m also thankful to the people who honked their horns as they drove by, and to the guy with the cowbell.  For me, these things added even more to the positive energy of the protest.  This may seem like a relatively small protest in West Seattle, but our numbers add to potentially millions of people who protested across the nation today.

  • WS Walker April 19, 2025 (4:26 pm)

Way to go West Seattleites! So many smiles, laughing, making connections, and all around joy at each intersection. Thank you to all who took the time to make a sign, show up and stand up for Democray!!!There was a lot of noisy honking – but the show of support from drivers and passengers alike was welcome and they were smiling too.Keep up the good work and keep the faith in people  power.

  • Jen April 19, 2025 (4:30 pm)

FANTASTIC!!Thank you all for doing this! HONK HONK!

  • Mb April 19, 2025 (4:39 pm)

I was there and so enjoyed the liveliness and community. I loved the cars honking support. I don’t do well with lots of noise so stayed south of the junction where it was just perfect. This was a great event and so fun to be a part of.

  • Zipda April 19, 2025 (4:46 pm)

Proud of my neighbors.Protest, scream, resist, honk and never give up as we watch our precious democracy dying at the hand of criminal fascists and their cowardly enablers..

  • Delridge Neighbor April 19, 2025 (5:00 pm)

  • Dog Whisperer April 19, 2025 (5:21 pm)

They’ll continue to protest until president trump fixes our 37 trillion dollar federal government debt.

  • Noise April 19, 2025 (5:23 pm)

It was great to participate in this WS. Loved all the supportive Honking & all the people that came out!!

  • Oerthehillz April 19, 2025 (5:23 pm)

Those of you blocking the main junctions intersection during a green light are being confrontational and disrespectful. Please if you’re going to demonstrate do it respectfully as someone may be needing to get somewhere in an emergency, etc…it’s completely unnecessary to throw your weight around to make a point. The turnout was more than enough, try doing it lawfully next time. I don’t support that kind of demonstration at all.

    • TeeJay April 19, 2025 (9:03 pm)

At The Junction, people stayed on the sidewalks until the WALK ALL WAYS light was on, and only then did they flow into the street. I saw this rhythm over and over. People in cars passed through in their turn, as usual, and in our turn, waves of people filled the intersection with joy and purpose.
Signed, another gray haired woman determined to see the Constitution respected.

      • Let’s be truthful y’all April 19, 2025 (9:23 pm)

So NOT true gray haired lady. We sat at the junction for 4 stoplights because of the demonstrators standing in our way when OUR light was green. While I do love that we live in a country that has the freedom to do so, I don’t appreciate pompous lies just because you think you are superior standing with a sign. Quit with the lies and pompous attitude.

        • Felix Grounds April 20, 2025 (4:58 pm)

          Four light ctles??!!THE HORROR-the horror.

      • Oerthehillz April 19, 2025 (9:52 pm)

you are wrong to say the green light was not blocked by crowds as I had to wait for it to clear while flags were being waved until it almost turned red.  Many of you lingered too long and kept cars from being able to go on their turn.  The cars behind me did not make it through because there were some who continued to wave their giant flags in the middle of the street knowing well that our light was green. It should raise caution that with differing political opinions this blatant blocking can cause road rage as we’ve seen in the news. Marchers are great, but should be reminded to respect traffic rules.

        • Cait April 19, 2025 (11:56 pm)

Was there the whole time and this is “fake news”. Weird to see it in action.

        • SaraJunction April 20, 2025 (8:31 am)

Is this a threat? Road rage? Because judging from your other comments I know who you voted for. Seeing people fight, protest , community building must boil your blood.

          • Oerthehillz April 21, 2025 (4:02 pm)

It’s too bad that you see my concern for my community as a threat even going as far as claiming you know who I voted for. You’re wrong on both accounts. A mild reminder for marchers to pay attention to traffic lights was grounded as a safety concern. Wow, people are so quick to jump on others. BTW I’m a Libertarian.

        • Brian April 20, 2025 (2:39 pm)

Seethe in your car some more. Get mad about it. Be sad.

    • Defender April 19, 2025 (9:21 pm)

Wow, I was there – didn’t see any of that.     HONK HONK

  • WSI April 19, 2025 (6:37 pm)

Thank you West Seattle! for showing up with signs, horns, chants, laughter, and love! Your energy and readiness to join us in protest today was beyond anything we at West Seattle Indivisible imagined. You have lifted our spirits and we are grateful for this community!

  • Laurie Reinhardt April 19, 2025 (6:53 pm)

2,000, 2,000, 2,000, 2,000, 2,000, 2,000, 2,000WE DID IT!2,000 DEMOCRACY DEFENDERS CAME OUT TODAY! WAY TO GO WEST SEATTLE!!!Thank you West Seattle Indivisible

  • Scarlett April 19, 2025 (7:25 pm)

Let’s pretend that Musk retires and goes back to Tesla and embattled Trump gives ground and his presidency morphs into mostly hot air – now what?  After some of you put your signs in the garage and pat yourselves on the back, go back to buying Tesla’s, do we go back to electing an establishment Republican-lite Democrat and call it good?  I see a lot of people having fun on street corners in a party atmosphere, but few really suffering;  I don’t see the urgency to match the crisis we’re allegedly in, a crisis that predates Trump.

    • Oerthehillz April 19, 2025 (8:09 pm)

      👍 agreed

    • LinPP April 19, 2025 (8:47 pm)

Thank you for your smug put-down.The point of this event wasn’t “…having fun on street corners in a party atmosphere…” but standing up to sound the alarm and join others in solidarity. We are angry, and we are scared. If you saw me or others smiling or seeming to be enjoying ourselves, it was because being with smart and empathetic people who also  recognize that we are in a crisis was energizing and, yes, joyous. We are in this together, and if you don’t feel this then you’re either much better off – or much worse off – than I can imagine.

    • mygoodness April 19, 2025 (10:46 pm)

Gosh, I don’t own a Tesla. I don’t even have a garage. I am not a person of wealth and I support Democratic candidates. Maybe protests aren’t your thing. I respect that. Me? I am boosted by the energy and support of communal protests. Your cynicism and critical take on how others process fear (some with the humor, joyous rebellion, and good trouble of protesting) is sort of sad to me. Open your heart and try to understand the variety of ways that your neighbors are processing this trauma and finding strength. For some it is ringing cowbells. For some, it’s crying in their beer. Who are you to judge? I would also caution you from letting  your pursuit of perfection in all things be the enemy of progress. Republican lite is better than fascism.

    • Jolyn April 19, 2025 (10:57 pm)

If you are on Medicaid, you know the fear.If you’re on Social Security, you know the fear.If you work for a government agency, you know the fear.If your retirement account has dwindled down lately, you know the fear. If you’re a woman of child bearing age who is sexually active, but doesn’t want to have a baby, you know the fear.If you are a veteran, you know the fear.If you’re a child who has been getting a free lunch, you or your parents know the fear.If you have a child with a disability who requires Medicaid, you know the fear.If you work in a university on federal grant funding, you know the fear.If you are an artist who depends on grants, you know the fear.If you’re a parent or grandparent, and not a billionaire or even a millionaire, you know the fear for your kids and grandkids, as well as for yourself. If you live where there are sometimes big storms, floods, fires, windstorms, earthquakes, slides or other natural disasters, you know the fear.If you know anything about the holocaust and other authoritarian attempts and successes at coups, you know the fear.If you have hopes for science in the near future, you know the fear.If you understand the critical necessity of maintaining our international alliances and/or the danger of allying with Russia, pushing China too far, abandoning Ukraine, leaving the UN, and a host of other actions currently underway, you know the fear.If you’re an undocumented, or even a legally documented, person living in the US, you know the fear.If you’re not Caucasian, male and straight, and have a fully functioning brain, you know the fear.If you understand anything about economics, you know the fear, and I’m leaving out many others who’re experiencing fear right now. If you’re any of the above, and haven’t fallen for the MAGA propaganda, knowing you haven’t been victimized by past liberal governments, you probably feel very angry, outraged, helpless, overwhelmed, sad, desperate, frustrated, and ashamed of the US. Getting together to protest feels empowering and unifying — even joyful.

    • Karen B April 19, 2025 (11:45 pm)

Scarlett: To your comment that you see few of us really suffering, and that the “crisis we’re allegedly in” predates Trump – consider the way that this administration has been upending people’s lives in cruel and indiscriminate ways, and without due process. Consider how he pardoned his convicted, violent, Jan 6 felons, loosing them back into society; yet is deporting migrants without any history of criminal convictions or violence. Look at the slashes to the federal workforce and programs that were doing so much good. Many of us who were protesting today may have been smiling and waving – but we are also incredulous that people such as yourself are drinking the Kool Aid and not seeing any problems except with those of us who are trying to call attention to what we see happening. I’ll go pat myself on the back now…for doing something that I believe matters!

    • Zipda April 20, 2025 (10:01 am)

It’s clear you have been asleep since Trump and Musk came to power.

  • Downonthecorner April 19, 2025 (7:34 pm)

Huge THANKS to the DRUMMERS / PERCUSSIONISTS that made the great protest at the Junction – well, great!  Also, the folks that led the chants… “ALL WALK” crossings have never been so fun.  For all of you that honked – each one of you made us protesters feel supported. Keep it up when you agree – HONK HONK HONK!

  • Cait April 19, 2025 (9:13 pm)

    For my dude Fred

  • Real April 19, 2025 (10:46 pm)

I continue to voice full support for President Trump and Elon Musk. I absolutely voted for this. At some point, the misguided protestors will acknowledge that relentless progressive policies are fully to blame for Seattles many woes. #Vance2028!

    • Rhonda April 20, 2025 (12:33 am)

      Amen, Real 🇺🇲

    • LeftistsRuleConservativesDrool April 20, 2025 (5:16 am)

Amazing the lengths you’ll go to just to own the libs or whatever. But hey, when you’re dying of a completely preventable disease at least you know you mad a trans person’s life worse, and that’s really all that matters to you.

    • Frankchoice April 20, 2025 (8:28 am)

Who cares who you support. Misguided? How arrogant of you. Relentless progressive policies? Crawl back into your small minded racist ignorant hole dude.

    • Lauren April 20, 2025 (8:30 am)

I’ve read stories about Germany in the late 20th century. How many former Nazi supporters claimed they were always against it. Comments like these remind me of that.

    • KW April 20, 2025 (8:40 am)

Real, may I come live with you when my Social Security and Medicare disappear, when my savings dwindle to nothing, when I lose my home, when my neighbors vanish?   Or will you wake up and stand up?

    • Alki resident April 20, 2025 (10:05 pm)

      Real… thank you for this.

  • aguywhocares April 20, 2025 (12:08 am)

Thank you to everyone who showed up today! The energy was really great. Let’s keep it going. ✊https://westseattleindivisible.squarespace.com/https://5calls.org/

  • D-Mom April 20, 2025 (7:05 am)

Thank you to all the people in cars, honking and holding signs out the windows. That and the all-walk at Alaska really made this a great day. Next time, I have noisemakers.

  • Actually Mike April 20, 2025 (7:38 am)

Thanks to the organizers for getting so many of us to come out, and thank you WSB for the coverage and pictures! It was great to join with so many other folks demanding change. I did see a few people intentionally blocking intersections, either by being slow to cross when the “Walk” sign lit up or by “parking” vehicles in traffic lanes through a green light cycle. That’s not cool–we’re not going to win any hearts by keeping people from going where they need to go. We should all remind each other to keep it clean next time. See you then!

  • Scarlett April 20, 2025 (7:42 am)

I’ll answer all of you, en masse, to save time and breath.  What I see in all the rallies across the country is the revolt of the porcelain white, affluent 401k-ers, from here to NYC to Atlanta, GA where I’ve been many times.  You’re not selling your story to those those you need to sell it to,  the MAGA who are dug in on Trump, perversely, if only to spite you on the left.  Most of all, you’re not selling it to the poor, MAGA or not, who’ve seen you capitalize financially over the years on globalism and then lecture others about the joys of undocumented immigration and riding bicycles to work to save money.

    • CarDriver April 20, 2025 (10:43 am)

Scarlett. Left scratching my head as to your point. You believe only rich white people have savings? You believe the “left” is evil but maga is not a problem? Clearly you have no interest in a solution but are content with your pity party.

    • Lauren April 20, 2025 (1:16 pm)

Yeah, zero interest in courting MAGA, thanks

  • Marty April 20, 2025 (3:22 pm)

I am more than willing to give it some time and see what happens. Maybe some crooked politicians will finally be exposed. Protesters have to be patient, this administration will be around for a long time!

    • Alki03 April 20, 2025 (7:39 pm)

Are you blind? Has the last 100 days not been crooked enough for you? Also, here’s Scarlett everyone :  https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZP8jVAREs/

    • CAM April 20, 2025 (7:40 pm)

I do believe the “crooked politicians” have already exposed themselves. Corporate sponsorship of a white house easter egg roll? Threatening charges of domestic terrorism against (and only against) people committing vandalism to one single brand of vehicle whose owner has given millions to individuals in power? Paying millions to individuals for votes (on camera)? Disproportionately firing female and non-white staffers at NIH? Creating, uncreating, recreating, and then uncreating again massive (and completely nonsensical) tariffs and watching as people “magically” know to always sell or buy just before some big announcement about those tariffs will be made?

  • Admiral-2009 April 20, 2025 (4:09 pm)

Trump is a disgrace to the office of President of the USA!

    • Alki resident April 20, 2025 (10:07 pm)

Trump is the BEST President we’ve had in many years.

Sincere question…what makes him the best POTUS we’ve had in many years? I’m genuinely curious on how others define ‘best’ —TIA

Tell us one thing he’s done to improve our lives, Alkiresident.  Is it crashing the strongest economy we’ve literally ever had, and tanking everyone’s 401k? Is it the tariffs, making life more expensive for everyone and alienating our former allies? Is it the kidnapping law abiding people and sending them to concentration camps, doing away with due process just because they have brown skin? Is it the widespread erasure of women and people of color and all of their accomplishments from all government websites? Is it the hiring of unqualified and highly dangerous people to run our national security, putting us ALL at risk and making us a joke in the world? Or is it just simply that you can finally be a loud bigot out loud, without rebuke? Please, expand on what makes him SO GREAT. Because I think we all know your answer.

Video of 1800-2000 patriots (or as many as we could fit in) stretching junction to junction to petition our government for redress of grievances:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v0DDfIHgrrk
