SEEN OFF WEST SEATTLE: Submarine and another ship of note (updated Thursday)

4:29 PM: Thanks to Steven Rice for the photo! Seen from West Seattle late this morning, a submarine and NOAA ship Oscar Dyson, an “ultra-quiet fisheries survey vessel” currently at Terminal 46 downtown. (That’s West Point Lighthouse in the photo.)

ADDED THURSDAY MORNING: We sent a note to the Oscar Dyson’s general email address, asking about their Seattle visit, and Commander Emily Rose replied, “The ship is in Seattle for a few more days before heading back to Kodiak after completing some repairs in the Puget Sound area.”

I see Elon is now literally torpedoing government agencies.

5 bucks says that NOAA vessel is in port because it’s job was defunded and the crew 86’ed.

Nope! Repairs. Got a reply this morning from the commander; added above.

Please stop taking pics of Subs.

Exactly!  Anyone who does obviously doesn’t take into account the national security implications.  Whether or not they support the military they need to know if you took the same picture while at the Banger base you’d soon be in the Brig.

Question Authority/Jen.  HUH????? Do you really believe that our adversaries don’t have satellites and can’t see them?? Do you think that nobody with a view of the water can’t see them?? If you’re concerned, then your ire needs to be directed at the navy for letting them operate on the surface. And finally, as wonderful as the WSB is do you really think our adversaries are reading it to see if there’s a picture of a military vessel???

So, so wrong. Information is power. You want to limit information to Americans by insinuating the information is going to enemy? I strongly believe that satellites and spies are providing our enemies with all the info they need. Well informed Americans provide our security. We need new thinking to dethrone satellites and spies.

Why our tax dollars built them.

You have to be kidding me.   You’re worried about a security lapse on the blog?  You don’t think that Russian and Chinese satellites aren’t taking all the photos they want (and btw … why – by treaty – the sub pens at Bangor and King’s Island on the east coast are built in order to reveal whether there is an Ohio class sub there at any given time).   Until our boats submerge, we’re fully visible to anyone who wants to track them, as theirs are to us.

If it can be seen by a camera it can be seen by satellites. If a movement required stealth, they wouldn’t do it at the surface from within easy view of occupied land.

The US government is engaging in illegal domestic surveillance of American citizens every single day.

    • WSB February 28, 2025 (8:48 pm)

As noted above, the commander said they were in this area for repairs…

I was married to a US Navy Radioman for Submarines. The public is permitted to take photos and videos of submarines unless submarine is in an area designated as a non-photo/video area. Millions of pictures of submarines have been taken over the years. You can take pictures of any military equipment if it is in public. If they don’t want to be seen, they would not be afloat while underway….I miss being a Navy Wife…sigh…

Sorry, comment time is over.
