WINDSTORM AFTERMATH: Lincoln Park path blocked

Thanks to the texter who sent that photo this morning. That big tree is down across the trail in the central upper area of Lincoln Park. We don’t know if it’s already been reported but if not, your options for reporting this or any other park maintenance problems include 206-684-7250. P.S. This is also a good reminder that you want to stay away from tall trees during windstorms – in parks and elsewhere!

Oh wow! I remember during the Columbus Day storm early 1960’s. The next day there were dozens of trees up routed and they were the original old growth. Huge root systems up to and exceeding 15 feet. Of course I was a small kid so the carnage was immense. During the storm you could hear massive tree cracking and breaks throughout the day. Not a good idea to walk under most trees during these storms which appear to be stronger and more frequent.

      It’s a little full. Lots’a sap.

The bad combinations are saturated soils and wind, snow and ice loading and wind, or humidity after bud break and wind.  Trees usually are pretty good with just wind. There is also extensive root rot throughout the park. This is an incense cedar from the grove by the rings

Is that one of the coastal redwoods?

Tree’s still there as of noon 12/18… Submitted a Find It, Fix It request in case SPR somehow isn’t aware. There was also a new downed tree (much smaller) nearby on an intersecting path. I assume that one went down with the high winds yesterday/overnight.

Sorry, comment time is over.
