WEST SEATTLE CRIME WATCH: Gunfire investigation

Police investigating a report of possible gunfire have found evidence. They got a report from High Point around 1:55 am that someone heard suspected gunfire and the sound of a car taking off; about 10 minutes later, an officer told dispatch they found “a couple of casings” a few blocks east of the caller, in the 2600 block of SW Brandon. No reports of injuries.

Heard what sounded like gunfire twice last night in the North Admiral District between 9 – 10pm and expected to hear sirens or read some kind of news about it. Have talked about this before with a neighbor who shared information about after market exhaust systems installed in many of these wannabe race cars that the kids drive that can actually make a popping sound resembling gunfire.  Is that really a thing?

      Yes, it is.

The modified car exhausts can sound a bit like gunfire, yes.  Especially if you get your perception of what gunfire sounds like from movies and TV, not actual gunfire.  Modded exhausts can be quite loud and abrupt, and are very common (daily) up and down Alki, Harbor, 35th, etc.

Both times they found casings and the car does have a modified exhaust.   So double noticeable.

We have a fancy Subaru on our street that sounds like a Glock pistol every time the young man downshifts. You can tell what time of day it is when he comes and goes from work.

Same experience here. Luckily the little brat finally graduated from high school and moved. Modified exhausts are illegal, but good luck pushing for LE to enforce the law.

If you hear suspected gunfire, report it.  Many times people will think that someone else will or that it’s just fireworks. This is the wrong way to think, every report of gunfire is one more piece of information that may lead to the arrest and removal of that firearm from use.
