UPDATE: Flipped-car crash on Admiral Way hill

2:26 PM: SPD and SFD are responding to a reported “rollover” blocking one southbound lane of the Admiral Way hill (north of the West Seattle Bridge). The driver is reported to have gotten out of the car so it’s just a one-engine response.

2:48 PM: Photo added. We just drove by the scene, which is not in a safe spot to pull over and ask questions. Only the outside downhill lane is blocked.

3:10 PM: They’re still waiting for the tow truck. Once it arrives, clearing the scene may temporarily block more than just the outside lane.

4:07 PM: SFD tells us that the “approximately 24-year-old male driver was evaluated and treated at the scene and did not want to go to the hospital for further care.”

Driver is safe and a fire truck/police car have arrived.

Just drove past this – and right before that I had someone do a 360 in front of me from SB 99 off-ramp to the West Seattle Bridge – roads are slippery.

Just drove past this! Glad everyone is safe and medical units have arrived. It’s a bit of a blind corner where it happened and a man ran out in the middle of the street when I came around it. That was also scary for myself and the cars behind me. It’s definitely wet out there! Be safe!

That hill needs a protected bike lane. Scary stuff and gets a lot of bike traffic. Glad the driver was okay!

      100%

I couldn’t disagree more.  A protected bike lane on the downhill of Admiral would hem cyclists into whatever substandard narrow non-code compliant soggy leaf-strewn morsel SDOT would deign to give us, and most likely mandate that cyclists use the ludicrous Luna Park chicane at the bottom of the hill.  It would necessitate either narrowing the main travel lanes or lessening the space for the uphill bike lane.  I would rather have the whole lane available to me. What protection from a rolling over sedan do you think a protected bike lane would provide?

    Slippery when wet!

Just went by on bus. Car is flipped right side up, but the scene isn’t cleared yet.

The driver was extremely fortunate to come out of the crash unscathed.  Did I miss if speeding was a factor?   Every time I drive Admiral Way SW going north or south on the hill, the number of speeding drivers seems to be increasing.  The higher the speed the less control a driver has over the vehicle.  Rainy streets are slippery and not conducive to speeding drivers.

What is the posted speed limit?

    • Myles September 25, 2023 (7:56 pm)

There are only 2 speed limits on Seattle city streets to my knowledge. Arterials = 25. Non-Arterials = 20. So, 25

The speed limits are a joke. There is zero enforcement. Nobody obeys them. I’d get run off the road of I went 25.

Not by me! I have respect and appreciation for people who drive the speed limit, they keep others in our community safe.

Agreed. Everyone does 40 on Admiral.

      TwentyFive.

20 mph residential streets and 25 mph arterials…arterials have a  broken yellow center line

I suspect speed and weather played a big part. The roads are going to be really slick. We haven’t had a big rain storm in a while. All the oil that’s been coating the roads mixes with the rain and turns the roads into slip-and-slides. Slow down!

Sorry, comment time is over.
