Stolen pickup crashes into Westwood yard

(WSB photo)

Thanks for the tip. That was the scene we found this past hour in a yard at 24th/Thistle. The police response drew attention as this is just east of Chief Sealth International High School. Police told us at the scene that the pickup was stolen; a resident told us that the driver abandoned it and got into a waiting semitruck cab that then left the scene. No injuries reported.

Glad no one was hurt. Noticed that there were some semi cabs parked next to Home Depot yesterday along with the other permanent vehicles on that road. Hopefully the cops will follow up.

the driver got into a semi that was waiting? I wonder if that is connected to all of the semi’s along Myer’s Way. There are a lot – and while I don’t want to assume that they are illegal, they look totally sketchy as they are parked along the guard rail by numerous trails that go into the woods there.

Semis are parked in a variety of places – elsewhere in the city, too – mostly because their operators need somewhere to park at night and aren’t able to do that wherever they live. There’ve been a few on Myers Way over the years but indeed, we just drove that way a couple days ago and was surprised to see how many were lining the street. This was the subject of a City Council discussion some months ago that I never did get around to writing about. As for this incident, first time I’ve heard of a semi-truck getaway vehicle, but who knows … last night in some other part of the city, a tow truck was stolen (and police recovered it shortly thereafter). – TR

There are also several semi cabs that have parked on 35th adjacent to the Myrtle Street reservoir park across from Our Lady Guadalupe. Not as many recently so not sure if there were restrictions hence more on Myers Way?

Thanks for bringing this up. This industrial parking has been going on for months now. At first it was just one semi cab. Then others started joining. Occasionally a complete tractor and trailer will be parked there. Sometimes it’s like a local version of Marginal Way.*********** I would think that industrial parking is not permitted in residential areas. It’s really bad when they park up close to Myrtle and you can’t see who’s coming up the hill on 35th if you’re waiting to pull out onto 35th from Myrtle on the west side. Is this legal?

It’s been going on for several years. I assume if they move every 72 hours and park 30 feet away from the intersections it’s completely legal. Curious though!

Get your tape measure out. Vehicles over 80″ wide may only park in industrial areas between midnight and 6AM. Report violations. If no one files reports enforcement will never happen. I don’t know if this area has sidewalks, but parking on sidewalks is a no-no also. A guy kept parking a big truck in front of my house on the sidewalk and finally broke a water meter cover. Karma was on my side — I saw a parking officer a block away and was able to catch up with her. She came right over and nailed the truck, plus a bunch of cars that had expired registrations. That broken meter cover was an enormous hazard and I want to compliment Seattle Public Utilities for replacing it within a couple of hours.

I have reported these semis across from OLG and haven’t seen any enforcement. They definitely stay more than 72 hours and often have expired tabs. Not sure if they are 80” + wide. There’s a really big patch of gravel that trucks bring. It’s all along the parking area, it gets kicked up and dings windshields. I filed a FIFI for that too but don’t think it was ever cleaned up. This was a few years ago.

Bill, you sound like a neighbor that would get me to move to another neighborhood. I live on Myrtle, have for over a decade, and someone parking a semi on 35th has NEVER bugged me nor caused an inconvenience in getting onto 35th. Im also stunned at how proud you are to have chased down parking enforcement to ticket the crap out of all of your neighbors. I can’t imagine why you’re practically bragging here. You may have zero self-awareness. Unregistered cars? Jesus, man

Adam, You are part of the problem. Stop enabling this behavior.

Too bad the driver was able to escape. If they were stuck in the truck they could have been held accountable for their actions and the damage they caused to someone’s property and the truck.

Sorry, comment time is over.
