Distracted driving suspected in Fauntleroy Way crash

3:51 PM: Thanks for the tips. This scene on the west side of Fauntleroy Way just south of SW Edmunds was getting cleared when we got there, but here’s what police told us – they’re investigating (updated) a driver for distracted driving, possibly phone use. That driver is reported to have veered into and damaged two parked motorcycles and a parked car. No one was hurt.

6:08 PM: Here’s a texted photo of where the silver vehicle ended up, taken before the tow crew arrived:

Saw this on my way home. Looked like the car hit and then pushed a parked car forward and on top of the red car. It appears that car was already taken from the scene but it must have been hit hard since the whole left side was crushed.

I hope the driver has insurance and pays for all the damage

Put your damn phones down people!

Please West Seattle.  Do not drive while impaired.  Or distracted.  Or at excessive speed.  Our spouses, children, friends are counting on us arriving home alive.

If the damage to other people’s vehicles isn’t bad enough, that thing could have jumped the curb and hit one or more pedestrians… —Mike

Ya I’m with Mike. I walk my dog there all the time and live right across the street. Hard to imagine that happened at 25 mph🤷🏼

I saw this accident shortly after it happened and there was another car involved.  The silver SUV was hit and pushed into the other cars by a black Jeep.  The Jeep had to have had some speed as it appeared the other cars were parked and moved by the impact.  There was someone collecting things from the Jeep when I drove by (appeared to be the driver but I’m not sure).  There were no response vehicles at scene yet just a few people standing on the sidewalk.  Hopefully someone witnessed it and gave statements.

My daughter lives right there and often parks in that area. Luckily she’s on vacation or she may have been carless for awhile. I’m mortified by this scene and as a motorcycle rider, seeing the bikes crunched up like this just makes me so relieved nobody was on them. They would’ve died instantly.

I was at work when I heard the crash. I was the first one at the scene besides the driver. It was a young girl in a black Jeep. She was unharmed but shaken and in shock over the incident. It appeared to me that she had to have been distracted (assuming a cell phone) and didn’t realized she veered out of her lane until she hit the parked silver car you see in the photos (the one getting towed…hers had already been towed away as it had been blocking traffic). The impacted pushed that car over two motorcycles and on top of the red car. FYI, I’m the photo I posted the silver car in the very back was just someone that drove up and parked in the spot about 5mins after the accident occurred. I didn’t get the Jeep in the photo, it’s hidden behind the crashed sliver car.

Speeding is still a problem on Fauntleroy. I regularly have people pass me in the turning lane when I’m trying to keep it at 25. I’ve witnessed hoons race down Edmunds and turn left through a red light at that intersection without even slowing down.

  • Phoebe April 8, 2022 (10:28 pm)

I also have a video from my store front. You can’t see much, but you can hear the crash and see the silver car getting thrown onto the red car. Just don’t know how to share it.

    • Caitlin April 9, 2022 (1:39 pm)

Hi Phoebe,I own the silver Toyota. Any chance you can share the video you got with me? I left a voicemail with the Business on Fauntleroy way today with my phone number. Thanks!

You can send us the video, or upload it to a publicly viewable service like YouTube or Vimeo and send us the link. Meantime, based on the witness accounts here, we’ve amended above to reflect that *a* driver is being investigated for distracted driving. There was no mention of an additional vehicle when we were there, but quite some time had elapsed – we don’t often go to crashes with no injuries but in this case we got multiple texts from people and decided that indicated something about it was notable enough that we’d better go.

I was on Fauntleroy yesterday not very far behind when the accident happened. I didn’t actually see the Jeep hit the parked car but..heard it. The Jeep appeared to have driven right into the parked vehicle. Glad no one was hurt as it could have been much worse. Be safe

I ride a class 3 e bike around town a lot.  This bike easily goes 28 mph on all but steep inclines.  I hope that many of you on here complaining about excessive speed are not some of the people who constantly feel the need to pass me when I am going plenty fast just because I am bike and you feel entitled to go 40 mph + on streets like California.  It does feel good though when I catch up and pass you again take my place at the front of the column once you are caught at the light at Morgan or Alaska or Admiral though.

Rocket, need to realize cars will pass a bicycle no matter what speed the bicycle is going. It is their duty. Their only greater duty is to pass the bicycle mere inches before the intersection that they will immediately turn right into, no signal needed. Or parking spot. It is embedded deep within the car’s amygdala and has never successfully been tampered with or otherwise reprogrammed.

  • Rylie April 9, 2022 (10:09 am)

I witnessed this accident. I was parked behind all these cars attempting to merge back into fauntleroy from an appointment when a jeep went FLYING by my vehicle (way past the speed limit) millimeters away from hitting me and plowed directly into the two three parked vehicles in front of me. She was going so fast the wind from her passing shook my car. She immediately got out of the jeep and started getting and hiding things out of her backseat with her hood up hiding her face. It did not seem like sober behavior. I called 911 and waited for the fire department to arrive. The jeep popped the silver SUV up over a motorcycle completely crushing it and then onto the back of a red car. I’m so grateful no one was hurt. I was so close to being involved more physically.

    • Caitlin April 9, 2022 (12:45 pm)

Hi Rylie, thanks for calling the police. Did the jeep drive away? I can’t get a police report request in until Monday. (I own the silver Toyota). Thanks!

      • CrushedBikeMan April 9, 2022 (7:48 pm)

The Jeep did not drive away. It was a rental and was towed. I stuck around on site for a while hoping the owner(you) would show up, but never saw anyone. I replied to another of your comments as did my partner. Feel free to send a message to the email she posted in her reply: mnova9029@gmail.com . I have only a small amount of info so far, but I have several photos and video, an incident number with the police, and have been attempting to reach out to the rental agency she was using. I also have contact with the owner of the red Toyota yours ended up on top of. So sorry this happened to you, but I guess we’re in this together now…

I have not felt safe in west Seattle in a long time.

  • Caitlin April 9, 2022 (12:37 pm)

I am the owner of the silver SUV that was hit by the jeep. If any one has any helpful information like the license plate of the Jeep, please send to to me! Thank you!

    • CrushedBikeMan April 9, 2022 (1:35 pm)

Hey that’s me in the pic and those were my bikes under your car. If you call west seattle whole foods produce and ask for Po I can give you all the info I have.

    • Sirena April 9, 2022 (2:36 pm)

My partner is the owner of the two motorcycles that got crushed. I have more pictures and the license plate number. Email me and I’ll send them to you! mnova9029@gmail.com

    • momosmom April 9, 2022 (3:00 pm)

The Police should have all the information you need.

  • CrushedBikeMan April 9, 2022 (2:54 pm)

I’m the one picking up the pieces of his totalled motorcycles in the picture. If anyone who witnessed this is able to reach out to me it’d be much appreciated. Here are two photos I got of the plate of the Jeep and the driver. My understanding is it was a rental and she was distracted on her phone.

Speed cameras are going up by Fairmont Playfield so hopefully that slows drivers down.

This is insane, this could resulted in someone killed just trying to get home to their family. There is no email or text message more important than the life of your neighbors.
