UPDATE: West Seattle power outage

8:19 AM: Thanks for the tips. Almost a thousand customers lost power in east West Seattle just before 8 am. The map shows most in Highland Park and Riverview, but also some out in west South Park.

8:30 AM: Chris says the signal lights at Olson/Myers are out.

9:58 AM: Julie Moore from SCL tells WSB they still haven’t figured out the cause; however, the map shows the number of customers out is down to 155.

11:16 AM: Texters say their power’s back. Meantime, the SCL map now attributes the outage to “equipment failure” (we’ll update when we get more specifics on what failed).

ADDED FRIDAY: According to Moore, “a tree fell and broke a cross arm on a pole” along 3rd SW near Westcrest Park.

Any idea the cause of the outage?

I have an inquiry out with SCL. Most of the time there’s something obvious like readers reporting a blown fuse, or a car hitting a pole, but this time so far nothing. (If anyone’s seeing a crew in the area, let us know!)

Purpleair.com shows horrific air quality in that area (markedly different from surrounding areas).  Is there a fire associated with this outage?

    • WSB August 5, 2021 (10:10 am)

No fires working in the city anywhere.

Isn’t it past time to start undergrounding the power lines?  If so, I think many of these outages would not have happened.

Undergrounding is massively expensive (and has its own problems; see upcoming story on Brace Point replacement-project preps).

Good time to check your earthquake supplies such as water, non-perishable food and clothing.  Also have cash in small bills as without electricity cash and credit card machines do not work.  Gas pumps also do not work so keep auto tank at least half full.

Sorry, comment time is over.
