POWER OUTAGE: 8,000+ customers in south West Seattle, White Center, beyond

3:13 AM: Thanks for the tips. Power is out for more than 8,000 customers in south West Seattle, White Center, and beyond. Updates to come.

3:40 AM: City Light says the cause is “under investigation.” Some of the affected customers lost power in outages just last Friday/Saturday (here’s our Monday followup on those causes).

4:54 AM: Via Twitter, SCL says, “They know the cause and are working to get power restored safely and quickly.” (Please let us know when you’re back on, since the map lags – thanks!)

6:10 AM: Thanks to everyone who just texted that their power’s back. SCL says the cause was “Transformer wire fell on a distribution wire.”

6:23 AM: SCL map has updated and shows about half the customers are back, half still out.

6:50 AM: Now the outage is down to 585 customers, mostly south of South Park, though the Myers Way pockets are still shown as out.

Three times now in six weeks, multi hour outages in thus area. They need to sort this. Getting rid some. I need a medical device for safe sleeping so power sure would help.

Restoration estimate moved to 9 a.m….guess a bunch of us will be driving into offices today.

    • WSB August 18, 2021 (6:17 am)

Please remember, as we note every time, the “estimated restoration” times are absolutely useless and not worth paying attention to. And indeed, for example, here we are with power back at 6 am – for at least half – when the “estimate” (they’re just guesses, City Light explained to us long ago) was 9.

I don’t understand why there are so many road closures.  I get the whole safety thing.  But then why did the close Hwy 599 heading towards I5/Tukwila?  Why shut down Hwy 599 heading towards the 1st Avenue bridge?  Cant they just block the streets heading INTO West Seattle?  Why shut down freeways?   I was leaving WS to go to Renton and I was detoured off Southbound Hwy 599.  Makes no sense.  Makes me wonder what’s really up.

Just came back on near 13th and Roxbury.

Highway 99 is blocked off in both directions where the power lines cross at 116th Street.  Lots of flashing lights there.  I was forced to take the exit at Des Moines Memorial Drive southbound.

    • BlairJ August 18, 2021 (8:53 am)

Correction:  Highway 99 was closed off around 100th, where the power lines cross the freeway near City Light’s Duwamish Substation.

It was the wrong morning for a 5am airport drop off. Like Tetris getting there and back with so many road closures. In the dark and no explanation except for an “incident.” I had no idea it was an outage until I finally got home snd looked at WSB.

Just came on 6:35. Shorewood area

Regarding the highway closures, WSDOT says the 509/599 problems are “power related” and specifically says 509 is a downed line. Can’t tell what’s specifically related to this outage, will be following up with SCL later.

    • sally August 19, 2021 (8:52 am)

Were there any follow ups on the cause of this outage? Was there an accident that caused the wires to come down?  thank you for any follow up

I have that inquiry out and am waiting for the reply.

Everyone of my co-workers were late this morning coming from the So.End into Georgetown.  They said they all had to take back-roads.  I saw the Closure at Cloverdale to get on So. Bound to 509 as I headed to the South Park Bridge.

8000 customers out of power due to a “transformer wire on a distribution line”?  What is that anyway? The SCL system is not designed very well if a distribution wire causes 8000 customers out of power.  Can’t they isolate and energize from alternate sources through switching?

Sorry, comment time is over.
