TRAFFIC/TRANSIT TODAY: Wednesday watch, 6th week of West Seattle Bridge closure

5:58 AM: 37th morning without the high-rise West Seattle Bridge. Here are the cameras for the restricted-access low bridge (where police enforcement continues) and the 5-way intersection west of it:

For general traffic, the main route across the Duwamish River is the 1st Avenue South Bridge (map). To get to I-5, exit at Michigan. Here are cameras for the bridge and Michigan east of it:

You can also cross the Duwamish River via the South Park Bridge (map), which puts you on East Marginal Way about a mile south of where the other bridge does. Here’s the South Park camera:

Check the @SDOTBridges Twitter feed to see if a bridge is opening for marine traffic.

TRANSIT ALERTS: Metro buses contine on a reduced schedule – details here. Also, bus capacity is now restricted … The Water Taxi continues its reduced (and shuttle-less) schedule.

Italy rebuilt the Genoa bridge reuniting the city of Genoa in 18 months.  Maybe we can at least have a plan in 18 months but I am not holding my breath

We can’t even get our streets repaved, and buckling sidewakes fixed. I see this bridge thing  lasting for years.

You’d think it would be attractive to do it fast because then MayJ could get her name splashed across the top while still running the place. But alas we have lost our sense of civic purpose, it has been sacrificed to the new gods.

Can we follow the Genoa Bridge example?Extraordinary times can create extraordinary opportunities to break old patterns. Here is a a link to the NY Times article and even a photo of it if the link doesn’t work.https://www.nytimes.com/2020/04/28/world/europe/italy-new-genoa-bridge.html?referringSource=articleShare

Hey, that first pic was used yesterday!

These are “live” images from SDOT cameras. The URLs don’t change, but they pull directly from whatever the cameras are sending. We retooled some weeks back to drop the high-bridge camera links, for obvious reasons…

Northbound 1st Avenue Bridge closed right now. Southbound still open. Men seem to be working on the bridge. Not sure what’s going on but been sitting here for probably 15 min now.

They were doing work, over now. I will start monitoring the WSDOT twitter channel more closely as that’s where it was announced.

Have any signs gone up related to the 15 mph speed limit on multi-use trails run by Seattle Parks and Rec?  It sounds like it’s a systemwide thing that was passed in late 2019, after the 1 year pilot of the Burke-Gilman Trail, Elliott Bay Trail, Mountains to Sound Trail, Melrose Connector Trail, and Duwamish Trails. The low bridge multi-use trail appears in one of the maps on the website , but I’m not even sure if that’s under the jurisdiction of SPR (which controls 7 trails according to their Nov 14th presentation).

The 5 way intersection looks to be operating better!

Heads up West Seattle, The Urbanist Blog just posted an op-ed that calls for NOT repairing/replacing the bridge at all due to climate change concerns. I don’t think for one second this idea will actually get any traction with the city/SDOT, but I wanted to get the word out that there are some people out there who want the bridge torn down and not replaced at all.

Thank you WSB for making this a reliable weekly update!
