Yes, that was a Seahawks flyover

This time it semi-paled in comparison to last night’s lightning storm, but still loud, so in case you weren’t sure, yes, that was a Seahawks-bound flyover heard a bit ago over West Seattle. Via Twitter, found some background info here – F-16s from Holloman AFB.

This is just so extremely messed up. I was terrified, my wife was terrified, my dog was terrified; and I’m sure thousands of other Seattleites had similar experiences. It also strikes me as just plain weird that the military sends fighter jets from New Mexico to here, afterburners in combat mode,  just to give some football fans a 10 second endorphin boost, while scaring the bejeepers out of probably way more people.

That’s a ten second recruiting pitch.

      Really?

You probably would have had the right to be terrified if they were enemy AC but turns out to be the SOUND OF FREEDOM…count your blessings

If it wasn’t for the brave men and women of our Armed Forces the jets you might hear next flying over your house might not be from this country.  Go USAF

I’m with you. It’s a grotesque spectacle that must end.

Hmmm….I’m wondering what “afterburners in combat mode” means?   I guess spending 4.5 years on the Abraham Lincoln, learning the combat specs of ALL our Airwings aircraft F-14 Tomcat, F-18 Hornet, S-3 Viking, EA-6 Prowler, A-6 Intruder) watching 100’s of launches and landings, I never saw or heard of more than two modes for afterburners; ON or OFF.   As a general practice, the afterburners on military jets are not commonly used over populated areas, and I will just about guarantee you that what you heard was NOT afterburners, but just the normal volume of military grade jet engine (the F-16 Falcon has only one engine, vice the F-18 Hornet which has two), the General Electric F100-PW-100.   Yes, military grade jet engines for our fighters ARE louder than a passenger jet engine, as they do NOT have any noise reduction measures installed.

Well, no, it’s currently Seahawks 14, Bengals 10.

I never heard them and we were out and about at the time.  I hear military planes occasionally as we are near several bases, including a naval base. It’s not that out of the ordinary to hear fighter jets flying over Seattle.

You’re nothing but a troublemaker. Can’t believe I still read this. Hope you are well my friend.

  • ITotallyAgreeWithYou September 8, 2019 (3:47 pm)

That explains my sighting of them a day or two ago flying into Boeing Field. I could hear them today from Mt Baker but sorry to say I missed the show!

    Your tax dollars at work.

    • West Seattle Hipster September 8, 2019 (5:26 pm)

I know, right!  Tax dollars are usually spent so efficiently, especially in Seattle.

    • Go Navy! September 8, 2019 (7:15 pm)

Love the Blues at Seafair and the F-16’s at Seahawk games! I have no problem spending my tax dollars like this. Go Navy, Go Air Force, Go Army, Go Military!!!

I work just NW of Boeing Field and her Jets occasionally and when I do it doesn’t scare me, it makes me thankful that I am an American and that we have brave men and woman putting their life out there like they do to protect us/our country!

  • ~Hockeywitch~ September 8, 2019 (8:47 pm)

I heard them! :) Startled me at first, then I went out on my balcony to try to see them… LOVE THOSE planes… Blues, Thunder Birds, USAF…

    Sound of Freedom!!

Honest question – not intended to be snarky.  Have we reached a point that climate change
is a bigger threat to our way of life than invasion from a foreign
    military?

  • Matt P September 9, 2019 (2:44 pm)

Yes, such freedom that no one cares about the veterans with ptsd this affects.

  • Don September 9, 2019 (2:53 pm)

Yes, Skeeter.  And climate change is a reality. It’s already happening.  No disrespect to America’s military.

  • Hypocrisy Now? September 9, 2019 (7:28 pm)

Yet, the 10’s of thousands of commercial flights daily for vacation travel and business trips are not even mentioned. But our military should never perform flyovers to celebrate our freedom? Really???

  • Chrome_CW September 10, 2019 (10:15 pm)

Turns out they used an airfield on Vashon to take off from to time the flyby closer with the anthem, which explains why it made such a racket in West Seattle. One of the pilots left a recap on Seahawks.NEThttp://www.seahawks.net/viewtopic.php?t=155708

Sorry, comment time is over.
