PHOTOS: Neighborhood volunteers clean Fairmount Ravine for the 25th year

Along the road and on the slope, another big haul in the annual Fairmount Ravine (north of here) cleanup today.

This was the 25th annual edition of the cleanup, this year coordinated by Matt Algieri, taking over for John Lang. Here are today’s volunteers, with Southwest Precinct Community Police Team Officers Jon Flores and Todd Wiebke:

They had piled up more than 80 bags – similar to last year – by the time a Department of Corrections community-work crew arrived for pickup and haulaway:

Excellent work, everyone! I know for a fact how exhausting and physically challenging it all was. One of the volunteers is sitting/sleeping right here….I was shown later in the day that area everyone worked on. What a hill to climb!

    Thanks to all the volunteers!

How does so much trash get there?

people driving up and down that hill, tossing their trash out the window is one way, wind blowing the street trash  around Hiawatha and WSHS down there,  for another. I’m just east of Safeway, not far from the ravine, and at lunchtime, there are plenty of high school kids who buy fast food from JITB, prepackaged food from Met Mkt and Safeway, and they have no problem discarding food wrappers and drink containers in the ‘hood, as they walk back to school. And , it was fairly windy the last two days…

As one who used to live under that bridge i must admit there is alot mor trash under there then there ever should be and homeless and taggers and highschoolers should b a little more respectfull and pile their garbage better. It goes both ways tho. Should b a garbage bin somewhere on fairmount to throw it in etc. Ida been there to help cleen but circumstances prevent me from doing so.
