High-school basketball season is now fully under way, and the West Seattle HS teams had a big night against Roosevelt on Friday:
In the WSHS gym, the Wildcat girls’ varsity team won, 61-36, followed by the boys taking their game against the Rough Riders, 52-40.
More photos from both games, ahead:
It’s the first year for girls-varsity head coach Darnell Taylor, after the departure of Sonya Elliott, who took the team to the state tournament last year:
That’s senior and co-captain Gabby Sarver, #21, with the coach, above. Three members of the team share the senior/co-captain description this year – also including #30, Lexi Ioane, and (below) #32, Lydia Giomi:
Fans of the team have new players to cheer for, too – one example, strong outside shooting last night from #10, freshman Jenna McPhee:
For the boys’ team, head coach Keffrey Fazio is back this year. He has two senior/co-captains – #4, Chaaka Trahan:
And #24, Carter Golgart:
Otherwise, the team is dominated by juniors, including #1, Nate Pryor:
Both WSHS varsity basketball teams are now 2-0 for the regular season, according to the Metro League website, so last night had much to cheer about, including Wizzy the Wildcat mascot:
Next up for the Wildcats: The girls play at North Thurston High School this afternoon, 3:30 pm; the boys are off until Tuesday, when they play at Nathan Hale, 7:30 pm.
