West Seattle Crime Watch: Robbery outside Avalon apartments

We’ve just obtained the police report for an armed robbery reported early today in the 3200 block of SW Avalon Way. The exact address has been redacted, but the holdup is described as having happened in an apartment-building parking lot visible from apartments above it (which likely means a parking area off the alley). The police report says it happened just after 1 am and that the victims told them they had pulled into the lot and were getting out of their car when the three robbers approached from the north.

One said, “Give me everything you’ve got,” and the first victim refused, until that robber pulled out a black handgun and pointed it at him. He then handed over his wallet and cell phone. Two more victims who were still in the car handed over a cell phone and a jacket. One of the robbers then was reported to have said, “We’ve got to get out of here,” and they walked away northbound. No one was hurt.

The report says all witnesses described the robbers the same way. The one with the gun was a Hispanic man in his early 20s, 5’6″ with a “chinstrap” beard, wearing a black baseball cap, black jacket, Nike high-top shoes; the other two, Hispanic males, one in a black jacket, one in a red jacket. A witness who reported seeing this from an apartment overlooking the lot said those two stood behind the victims’ car while the robbery was happening (which would explain the more-vague description). Police noticed security cameras nearby but could not find an on-site manager from whom to obtain video at the time.

Note: The SPD report also says that while officers were responding to the call, they heard over the radio that the robbers might be in a red Cadillac with a white top, traveling south on Delridge. A car matching that description was stopped (a “high-risk stop,” which means, at gunpoint) and its driver was taken to the robbery scene, but the victims said he wasn’t one of the robbers, so he was released.

Very scary situation. All I will say is to be extra vigilant when out after dark. Criminals are lurking everywhere waiting for the right opportunity.

Another very scary garage is under the Jefferson Square lot, I do business with the Real Estate Agents in this building and every time I pull into this garage in the evenings there seems to be some creepy guys looking in car windows!!
