West Seattle Crime Watch: Car prowls; mail-theft attempt

Three Four reader reports in West Seattle Crime Watch today – click ahead for details:

Car prowlers are still busy at Lincoln Park. From Devon last night:

Took my dog for a walk at Lincoln Park and came back by 5:30 and my 2013 Kia Sportage was broken into through the passenger window…police report filed. Just sad this continues to happen here.

(added at 10:06 am, just in via e-mail) Barb reports a car break-in last night:

My husband parked on a very dark section of 45th SW in front of our house last night in the 4800 block. He had a trailer behind his truck so couldn’t fit in the lighted parking area behind the house. This morning he found the truck broken into with credit cards, phone, tools, CDs and more missing. A screwdriver was in the ignition, but the thieves couldn’t disable the locking code. If they had we’d be out many thousands of dollars in vehicle and flooring supply losses plus an on-loan trailer. Do be on the alert for prowlers and guard your stuff.

(back to original report) The next two are from anonymous tipsters. Tuesday in Admiral:

At 5:20 am (Tuesday) morning on California Ave SW and SW Lander St, my car (2-door Honda Civic sedan 1993 model) that was parked just right on the side of Lafayette Elementary (just slightly north of the playground) has been prowled on. I discovered the trunk was open. The driver door was unlocked, and the hood has been opened as well. Inside, the car documents were scattered on the floor. What was taken was a box located in the trunk that has tools, towels, water, and a pair of brand new windshield wipers. I want to remain anonymous, but sending this message to let others be aware and be careful.

Mail-theft attempt in White Center, 10th/116th – but since authorities have pointed out that the same suspects in recurring crimes often work both sides of the city-county line, potentially of interest:
About 5:15 am Sunday 10/27, a dark-skinned female with a black shoulder bag was walking south on 10th Ave SW. After opening several mailboxes, she got into the back passenger seat of a white, cream, silver or light colored 4-door Volvo or similar type car that had a wind deflector on the roof and sounded like a large diesel truck. Very friendly. I heard her say “Good Morning” a few houses up before I realized they were trolling our neighborhood for mail. Police were called immediately.

P.S. The next West Seattle Crime Prevention Council meeting is less than 2 weeks away, Tuesday, November 19th, 7 pm @ Southwest Precinct (Delridge/Webster), with special guest Jim Curtin from SDOT talking about traffic safety, collision hotspots, and more. All welcome.

Not to be a jerk (as I’ve been a mail theft victim on occasion too), but there are more lucrative days to prowl for mail than on Sundays.

That community ‘small’ business owner did not deserve to be preyed upon by worthless slime. He is a good man, hardworking and deserving of respect. He and Barb are longtime West Seattle residents and wonderful neighbors. Their loss and the invasion of their privacy just makes me sick!

Maybe we should all contribute 5 minutes on our way into and out of the park strolling the the length of the lot and noting suspicious vehicles and behaviors. Panel vans always make me look twice in the lot. Being visible and purposeful a la neighborhood watch-the-lot (s). Depending on observations, next steps might reveal themselves.

Sorry, comment time is over.
