TRAFFIC/TRANSIT TODAY: Thursday updates; 2 upcoming reminders

(Live view from the east-facing WS Bridge camera; other cameras are on the WSB Traffic page)
As we begin the morning, one more reminder: The new southbound Delridge Way detour between Holden and Thistle is now in effect. Looking ahead to the weekend, the only major planned closure happens on Sunday, for the West Seattle 5K and then Seattle Summer Streets on Alki:

Along the usual car-free-day footprint, Alki and Harbor Avenues will be closed for WS5K approximately 9 am-11 am, and then everything reopens except Alki between 56th and 63rd, where festivities will continue till 5 pm (see you there!).

BUT FIRST … tomorrow (Friday) is Bike to Work Day, with a commute station under the West Seattle Bridge 6-9 am as usual, and other special events/stops as shown on this map assembled by the Cascade Bicycle Club:

ADDED 9:55 AM: Thanks to commenters for word of the truck flip on the hill to and from the Myers Way ramp to/from Highway 509:

It was a Charlie’s Produce truck, witnesses say. No injuries reported; traffic was getting around, albeit slowly, and the tow truck had arrived by the time our crew got there.

ADDED 10:39 AM: SDOT just tweeted that a crash reported earlier on southbound 1st Avenue South at Horton has closed the 1st Ave. ramp to/from the westbound West Seattle Bridge.

ADDED 12:54 PM: Still closed at last report. Thanks to Tony Bradley for the photo:

We’ll update when the blockage is cleared and the bridge ramp reopens.

Not sure if you have been informed, but there is a large truck on its side coming down the steep hill on Roxbury. Traffic was a mess getting past and to 99 N.

For those headed to 509 from the White Center area… There was a truck rolled over at the Olson Place/Myers Way intersection around 9:00. Maybe it’s cleared now but when I was there it was pretty slow going.

Thanks, Rick. Co-publisher went to check it out – no injury so not on 911 log – and said the tow truck had already arrived and traffic was getting around it. Will be adding.

Hey, a note to drivers who arrive at a red light where a cyclist has stopped (I know you don’t believe that scenario, but bear with me…) if you are getting to the light just as it’s about to turn green, don’t blow past within two feet of the cyclist at 30 mph. (I know you’ve got all sorts of anecdotes of cyclists behaving badly, but two wrongs don’t make a right…)

Then after subverting the new median divider where Delridge hits W Marginal Way by making a blatantly illegal U-turn to get on the low bridge without waiting at the Chelan 5-way intersection don’t charge at that cyclist who is now in the crosswalk.

There’s no justification for that kind of anti-social behavior.

Oh and tomorrow’s bike to work day!

Thanks, JAT. Last night I saw two cars approach a traffic circle at the same time, at 45th and Andover. The woman on Andover couldn’t see the guy approaching on 45th, but she slowed down just in case someone was coming. She had the right of way, and the guy who didn’t have theright of way didn’t slow and just swung around the circle at full speed without looking.

Kudos to the woman who avoided getting hit by being ultra cautious.

i was on the 113 bus and saw the accident happen – he couldnt stop for the light coming down the hill, turned to the left but the load inside the truck was all on that side and over he went – skidded about 25 feet – didn’t hit anyone – and with the help of a guy (and a few from our bus)who climed up the truck – the driver was able to get out with no visible injuries.

Can’t think of a city, in general, less suited to bicycling due to hills, blind-spots, poor lighting, poor condition of narrow streets, weather, etc, etc. It’s like trying to fit a square peg into a round hole.

  • First Avenue May 16, 2013 (1:43 pm)

Wow. It seems like it would be tough to roll a semi on First Avenue South in that area. Speed limit 35 MPH and all…unbelievable.

  • Christie May 16, 2013 (2:56 pm)

no he was coming down hill from Roxbury where it turns and then you get on the SR509 towards the 1st ave bridge.

What’s going on with the tippy trucks lately? That’s 3 in the last 1.5 weeks in/near WSeattle by my count.

I went by on a north/eastbound Route 60 probably around 10:15-10:20 this morning, and by that time the Charlie’s Produce truck had been uprighted, and was sitting crossways across the south/westbound lanes of Myers Way, hooked to the tow truck, with traffic still squeezing through. Was wondering what had happened. Glad the driver is okay.

    .

Another rider said something like; “I wonder what happened?”. I resisted the urge, in regards to the produce truck, saying; “Beets me”. ;-)

    Christie:

There were TWO rolled trucks today. I was referring to the semi on FIRST AVENUE SOUTH.

    Check out the photos above.
