West Seattle wildlife: In the trees and on the beach

While walking in Lincoln Park yesterday afternoon in relation to this story, the group we were covering stopped to check out a baby eagle in a nest high above. We couldn’t get a photo – but today, Gay did, along with the photo below, and tells the tale:

We got some great directions to the nest from our friend Tami and then good guidance from a kind stranger. Amazing chance to see one of the juveniles quite literally “out on a limb” waiting for lunch. The adult dropped off a big fish in the nest, rested a bit on the same limb and then went right back out to the Sound for more fish. It was glorious…enjoy!

Speaking of the beach, we mentioned today’s low tide in the morning preview. Jim Clark shared some sights on the beach, including this one:

I wonder what the eagle thinks about the proposed zipline??

Probably about as little as the rest of West Seattle’s birds, wild life and people. Can’t imagine having that there. Boooo.

A bigger eagle might think, ” DINNER!”

…Too bad he and his parents don’t get a vote. It’s up to us to speak for them to make sure they are always able to nest here with no concern about zip-lines or other human intrusions into their wild homes.

I’m wondering what the impacts of fireworks will be on these nesting birds in Lincoln Park. I’ve been monitoring a 100-acre sanctuary in the southend for decades. Every year after this holiday, the place is staggeringly silent, this despite a cacophony of calls and songs up through July 3rd. It’s a very different place on July 5th than just few days before.

If you monitor the nests in Lincoln Park, please let us know if the nestlings are still there tomorrow or Friday, and post your findings here on this thread so we can track it.

Copy that, Suzanne. There were quite a few people out there today so I am certain someone will chime in. The zip line was a common topic of discussion out there today. Thanks to WSB for keeping us all in the know!

I will not be able to get back until Saturday…let’s hear from you, people :)

Sorry, comment time is over.
