West Seattle Crime Watch: Knife found; robbery attempt

In West Seattle Crime Watch tonight – an update on the knifepoint robbery reported last night, plus a new report of street crime. First: Police went back today to the scene where a woman was held up at knifepoint last night by a robber who took her iPhone. They didn’t find the phone (a black iPhone 4S) but they did find the knife, described as a “dagger-style” weapon. We also have learned more about the arrest made in the case. After the victim reported the holdup in the 3400 block of SW 106th – where she was walking after getting off a Metro bus – Officer Scott Luckie (of “tweetalong” and burglary-arrests fame) was “working the area,” according to an SPD summary, and “spotted the suspect in the 9200 block of 35th … The suspect tried to hide from Officer Luckie, but Luckie was able to relocate him and detain him …” The summary identifies the suspect as a boy who turns 17 next month and is “on probation for robbery.” Since he is a juvenile, online records don’t show whether he is still in custody tonight, nor do they show full details of his record, but we did find partial information on a case in which he appears to have been charged with third-degree assault last August and pleaded guilty in late October.

Second – a robbery attempt last night in the Genesee area. The victim is a visitor from out of the country, and the people he’s staying with say it’s the second time he’s been victimized:

Joshua’s family is hosting the 26-year-old man, a “homestay” student from Saudi Arabia attending UW to study English before seeking an MBA. Joshua sent this note late last night:

I’m sorry to report that our homestay student has been attacked again tonight at about 8:45 pm on his way walking home from California Ave to our house. There were 4 teenagers, again all late teens, all caucasian. One of them grabbed (the victim’s) backpack from behind and tried to take it off his back. (The victim) fell down, got up and ran back to our house. It happened at approximately 47th and Dakota St this time. This was again on a Friday night, which says to me, these are kids from outside the area coming to see what things look vulnerable to take. We again reported it to the police. This is the second incident, the first being Dec. 23rd. I hope with these reports the patrols will increase in our area.

We hadn’t previously heard of the December 23rd incident, but Joshua says it happened a few blocks away, at 51st/Dakota. We looked up the report, which was filed a few days after the incident happened – the report says the victim didn’t know to call 911 since he had just arrived in the country days earlier, but the one last night was reported immediately. The would-be robbers, the report says, asked the victim for a cigarette, then tried to take his cell phone, which the victim managed to wrestle back. They were described as white, male, roughly 18-20 years old, wearing dark hoodies, and “intoxicated.”

*awesome* that Officer Luckie caught the perp in the first instance.

p.s. I would really love to know the name of the person in the first case. How might I find out?

[I’m referring to the hoodrat, by the way.]

Sorry that I can’t help you – I won’t be publishing his name unless he is charged as an adult, assuming he is charged. The city only publishes redacted versions of the report online, without the suspect and victim’s names, so it won’t be there. Only thing I can suggest is: If you know a name you think might be his, try the Washington Court Search/Name Search online (it’s publicly accessible, no software, no cost – the cost and sign-ons come if you then try to look up paperwork on a specific case, which in this case isn’t available online anyway since it was juvenile), and see if he comes up with a case that started in late August … TR

    OK, thanks WSB! Will do.

Wish there was a way to thank Officer Luckie personally. Hope he reads this.

one of these kids is going to rob someone who’s packing one day and that will be the end of that kid. maybe that will teach the rest of the hood rats a lesson

What a terrible impression this homestay student must be getting of our country. Sad.

  • SomeGuy January 8, 2012 (10:30 am)

Great point cclarue. In his home country, Saudi Arabia, it’s easier to tell who the hoodrats are since they are missing one or both hands. Hard to work an iPod with nubs! :)

@joel, I had that thought, too.
Anybody know what the laws are regarding private citizens carrying tasers?

  • questionable January 8, 2012 (10:57 am)

The people who puff up their chests in internet comments are hilarious. If you shoot someone, you’re going to jail and will face a long road in the judicial system whether it was warranted in your opinion or not. Assault with deadly weapon and murder don’t change in the eyes of the law just because you think you’re john wayne.

  • marty January 8, 2012 (11:48 am)

questionable: You don’t have a clue about what you are talking about. If someone pulls a knife on you, you have every right to shoot. If he is leaving and you shoot him in the back, you are in trouble.

Bernie Goetz would disagree. If you are an able-bodied male and you shoot and kill a bunch of teenagers who surround you, you are going to be run through the ringer. Doesn’t even matter if it is completely justified. Society and the media needs to make someone pay for the dead bodies, right or wrong.

Officer Luckie, you are my hero!!!

  • bridge to somewhere January 8, 2012 (6:56 pm)

Yes, according to state law, it’s justifiable to kill someone if they are committing a felony toward you or are attempting to do great harm to you or your family. Check the RCW that WSB posted for verification of that law.

Ick… I can’t stand reading about all the violence. I’m sorry you were in this situation. But is it necessary for everyone to talk about shooting people.

Just to clarify, I wondered what would happen if it were someone who *did* have a gun. I don’t care to have one myself. I do wonder about legality of less lethal self protection (tasers) tho…

  • Ace20604 January 9, 2012 (6:12 am)

    Tuba-man, kids can kill, remember…

  • Ajax January 9, 2012 (11:04 am)

A 16 year old who has at the very least committed assault, robbery and aggravated robbery in the last year or so? The parent(s) obviously failed so it would appear that it’s time for the state to give it a try. Adult crimes should result in adult punishment.

  • Without my Phone January 9, 2012 (1:25 pm)

    Agreed, Ajax

  • bridge to somewhere January 9, 2012 (2:32 pm)

@Lolaleah: fair enough. I think there are many folks out there who feel helpless and like to think that there may be *something* they could do to prevent this kind of crime, even if they aren’t likely to do it.

Don’t threaten my life at knife point, that’s all I’m asking for. All these posts on violence year after year scare me. I live and work in WS and enjoy my long daily walks to and from both locations. Good thing I haven’t yet been robbed like these poor people, I have a valid permit and always carry my pistol stuffed with hollowpoints everywhere I go. But the reality is ppl don’t usually get carded before they get shot. So let’s all play nice and not go looking for real trouble.

Sorry, comment time is over.
