Startling sounds in North Admiral early today: Fireworks

Lots of questions this morning about something that sounded like gunshots in North Admiral overnight – around 2:30 am, by most accounts. As we replied to several people, we know nobody GOT shot in this area overnight, but that’s as much as we know for sure. However, one WSB’er (who didn’t want her name used) reports:

I called 911 last night at 2:25 AM, Sunday morning, in the N. part of North Admiral Area because of what sounded like possible gunfire – 2 rounds of 2 “bangs” about 1 minute apart (startled me out of bed).

This morning, called Police Dept to follow up,.They said there were several calls about this and they believe it was attributed to “fireworks” thrown from a vehicle and that they “had a description of the vehicle” but that is all they would say.

We’ll let you know if we hear anything different. 11:24 AM NOTE: A comment’s just come in from a witness who was the original caller – fireworks for sure.

This was very loud and actually felt like my bed was bumped twice. I got up because I thought it might be my dog alerting me to let her outside. She was sound asleep in another part of the house. Earthquake?

It was teenagers driving around lighting off fireworks in intersections around North Admiral. We heard the booms from a few blocks away. Then they stopped in front of our house and set one off, causing us to call the police.

They were in a red 90s Jeep Cherokee, and the passenger, who got out and set off the firework, was a long, dark-haired young woman in a white sweatshirt and black pants.

The police cruised by a few minutes later, and other teenagers started appearing on foot and in another car. Maybe it was some kind of celebration/game related to homecoming? Annoying, but then I did the same basic thing as a dumb teenager–until I got caught:-)

Pretty sure J.J is correct. It started off earlier in the evening, by the sounds of it, near Belvidevere ~10-ish. Probably M-80s, judging from the sound of them.

I happened to be awake at that time and I heard the two bangs, and several seconds later another one. I live on 44th and Charlestown, so if that was fireworks in North Admiral they had to be large ones.

About six weeks ago this exact same thing happened. Middle of the night, we were awakened by what sounded like gunfire or rockets going off. Very frightening and disturbing. All to say this isn’t a “celebration” related to homecoming, it feels like a recurring deliberate act targeting a neighborhood. I wish the police would catch whoever is doing this.

It was most definitely fireworks; at one point I saw green sparks outside my window. I get that teenagers do stupid things that they find funny or thrilling, but the noise and hour is totally unacceptable when people can react negatively (health-wise) to such a commotion.

Sorry, comment time is over.
