Senators in West Seattle to announce job-training program

This past hour, both of our state’s U.S. Senators were at South Seattle Community College‘s main campus here in West Seattle to announce a $20 million federal grant that “will train 2,600 more workers with the skills needed by Washington state aerospace employers,” according to the official announcement. SSCC President Gary Oertli was among those with Senators Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell for the announcement at one of the training facilities expected to benefit – the Aerospace Joint Apprenticeship Committee’s Advanced Inspection and Manufacturing Mobile Training Unit at SSCC. After the formalities, we photographed Sen. Cantwell inspecting an SSCC goodie basket from Pres. Oertli – with some of the college’s trademarked food/beverage creations:

We covered the announcement; our video is here.

    This is great news.
I was laid off 8 years ago from boeing.
Now with 13 medical restrictions issued from the boeing company for work related conditions, I have had my application in for years for rehire but have never been contacted for re-employment from boeing.
I dont think Target would even hire me with these restrictions.
For years boeing said they were going to give me a medical lay off but instead they just layed me off with no benifits.
Maybe now I can get someone to hire a highly skilled aircraft mechanic with disablities

You would think boeing would rehire the people they laid off. Plus what a bargin for boeing to get the feds to pay for training the new help. What ba country.

I think this grant is a great way to help skill up workers in Washington and will help train workers for the other 650 or so aerospace companies in Washington who supply to Boeing. It’s shortsighted to only think of training for Boeing. It’s all the suppliers who have this need for skilled workers too.

Sorry, comment time is over.
