Followup: Potter Construction’s pencil, permanently poised

West Seattle artist Stephen Rock‘s 13 1/2-foot-tall megapencil is now poised right outside the offices of Potter Construction (WSB sponsor). We previewed this last night. Check it out next time you’re in the 5600 block of California SW! (The folks at nearby Illusions Hair Design, also a WSB sponsor, tweeted this photo of Gary Potter with his new, artistic addition.)

In 2007, I was present for the unveiling of the biggest pencil in the world, as certified by the Guinness Book of World Records. Created by Ashrita Furman, who holds the Guiness World Record for breaking the most world records, it is 76′ long and has a 2-1/2′ long eraser. It now resides in the City Museum in St. Louis, Missouri.

Here is a link about the pencil:

Also, following is a link to a great 10 minute video clip about the pencil’s creator, Ashrita Furman, from when he was interviewed on Real Sports with Brant Gumbel in 2009. It is a riot! He has set 358 official Guiness records siince 1979 and currently holds 133

How do the people that live right next to eraser feel? Nice to know they can erase any pencil markings they ever wanted…j/k

I agree with you Andy. I actually live right where the pencil is placed. I guess I just dont understand the point of it.
