West Seattle volunteers needed: All you have to do is drive

Just got a request from the Senior Services Transportation Program to put out a call for volunteers. They have an urgent need for people to drive seniors to health-care appointments – and right now, they’re so short, they say they’re turning away half the seniors who call! You choose the days and times you are available to give someone a ride. Want to know more? Contact Melissa at melissat@seniorservices.org or (206) 748-7588.

I talked to folks at Senior Services table at Highpoint Health Fair last weekend, who told me about Hyde Shuttle for 55+; got out my brochure, and just clicked on link above; Hyde Shuttle is right under Volunteer Transportation; I called the contact listed, a live person answered right away; she said they have shuttle vans available to transport seniors in West Seattle, the more notice you can give the better; but there is transportation for seniors to medical appts via the Hyde Shuttle; she said you can even call a month in advance to book rides for appointments; and both the Hyde Shuttle (206) 727-6262 Toll Free:1-877-415-3632 (WA only) and the Volunteer Transportation teams need drivers

“Created in 1997, the Hyde Shuttles transport seniors and people with disabilities to hot meal programs, medical appointments, senior centers, grocery stores, and other local destinations.

The service provides riders with an opportunity to socialize and stay active within their communities. It gives our van drivers an overwhelming sense of satisfaction and a chance to form many special friendships. There is no charge for rides, but donations are welcome.”

This request for us to publish a volunteer-recruiting call came directly to us from Senior Services and they didn’t say anything about the other service you mention, but thanks for noting that they need drivers too. – TR

I was more concerned about seniors thinking there were no options for them to get rides (due to lack of drivers); if seniors are turned away due to lack of individual volunteer drivers, there are rides available via the Hyde Shuttle

Sorry, comment time is over.
