Gatewood arson update: ‘Probable cause’ found, bail hearing delayed till tomorrow

We’re on our way out of downtown, after a very brief King County Jail courtroom hearing in the case of 40-year-old John C. Siegel, arrested (as reported here last night) for investigation of arson in connection with the fire yesterday at the Gatewood home for which county records list him as co-owner. Siegel did not appear; lawyers told the judge he was “too sick” to come to court today, so the bail hearing is delayed until tomorrow, but they did need to ask the judge if she found “probable cause” to hold him till then. She reviewed documents containing the police report in the case, and said she did. According to those documents, he was found at the burning home, and told investigators he was asleep and woke up to find the house on fire. (His “last known address” is listed on the police report as Mercer Island.) The report says investigators determined the fire was “intentionally set with a hand-held flame to available combustibles,” started in the northwest corner of the house (shown above in our post-fire photo from last night). More details from the report after the jump:

Siegel’s ex-wife told investigators he was at the house when she left at about 7:30 yesterday morning, three hours before the fire. She said he had told her the night before that, quoting the report, “if she did not come back to him, he did not want to live.” When firefighters arrived, the report says, he was found with an injury to his wrist that he said was self-inflicted. He is reported to have told a police investigator at the hospital that he “woke up to blood all over and the sound of the crackling fire. There was fire and smoke all over. … When (arson investigators) were advised of what Siegel had said, they said it was such a fast-moving fire and with Siegel saying it was crackling and smoke it was a free-burning fire and not a smoldering fire. With that information, if what Siegel had said was true he should be burned.” However, the report says, he did not have any burns on his body; he claimed to have “singed hair,” but none was seen.

ADDED 3:24 PM: In addition to those details from paperwork included with the “probable cause” documents provided to media by the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, we also have a few more from the report on file with SPD. That report says he told one of the first police officers at the scene that he was homeless and that his ex-wife had let him move into the Gatewood home a few weeks ago. As noted in our report last night, he spent two months in jail earlier this year and was released after a plea bargain in a case involving domestic violence against her and threats against a judge.

This guy has been a terrible neighbor and although I was suprised to come home and find that he did this, we always suspected he was capable of great harm. This is my first real exposure to domestic violence and I hope that they lock this guy up for a long time and his ex-wife and children can find some peace.

Please keep this guy off the streets!! Obviously, something is VERY wrong with him!

I’m concerned about our next door neighbor too. The “upstanding” type, good job, money, family, etc. But if a neighbor simply has concerns is there really anything you can do?

  • enviromaven June 29, 2011 (7:04 pm)

Arson, domestic violence, threats against a judge – yikes! This guy is a serious danger to himself and others. I’d be worried, too, if he was my neighbor…

It’s frightening to be a neighbor to domestic violence. When ever I hear anything out of the ordinary on our block I call the police. Thank God, it’s never domestic violence. If a marriage is over, I just can’t understand why both parties can’t just walk away, and if a kid is envolved, do what is best for them. So sorry for the wife and family. A sweet peaceful life is just around the corner for you. A neighbor

He will be out in a week and live rent free under some kind of tax paid program…god bless America!

We lived in the neighborhood and enjoyed all the children that lived on this property (2 related family households). We hope they are OK through all this and will miss them.

This house was definitely the ‘dog’ of the neighborhood. We used to walk by there on occasion but it became to creepy… The kids didn’t seem to know English and it looked like an abandon sh__ hole. We were walking by one day when the police pulled up and said someone called 911 and asked if it was us. They went to the door but no one answered. I hope these people leave forever… If she had a restraining order why was he even back in the house??? The whole thing seems dysfunctional, isn’t there a trail going in Florida right now that could have occurred in that house.

I hope the house sells and they all leave… Mercer Island would be a good place for them to go, not West Seattle.

Dora, your comment is unkind and also nonsensical. A trail to Florida? I understand you wanting them to leave, but you could be nicer about it; there are children involved.

  • Aqui no June 30, 2011 (9:26 am)

wishing the best to the victims.
Dora, you are a fine example of a NIMBY, yes, send “them” to Mercer Island, we dont want “them” in West Seattle!

If she had a restraining order why was he even back in the house???

Because restraining orders often aren’t worth the paper they’re printed on.

  • 35this35mph June 30, 2011 (8:19 pm)

    I’m guessing “trial.”

And restraining orders are not made of magic. They are also not a legit pretext for blaming the victim.

  • Dora June 30, 2011 (10:34 pm)

    Aqui no,
I have to ask who do you consider to be the victim in this instance? Is it the firefighters who risk their lives (one was injured) to put out a fire that was intentionally set, is it the neighbor next door who could have been affected if the fire spread? In a comment on a separate post for this story it was stated “He has made my wife scared for her life several times. I know of other people that have the same fear.” Who exactly are the victims here? I agree the children are victims. I don’t agree that the two adults are victims. It appears he was let back into the house without incident.
Datamuse, the police can only enforce the restraining orders if you call them. The ex-wife did not call the police if he was ‘in the house at 7:30 when she left’. Maybe there was more to it than that, but it doesn’t read that way.
I am happy to be called ‘not in my back yard’ I don’t want dysfunction, drama, an unmaintained property and arson in my neighborhood.

Clearly Dora knows nothing about domestic violence. Glad she’s not my neighbor! I sure hope the victim isn’t reading this blaming trash, if you are, disregard Dora’s ignorance.

  • datamuse July 1, 2011 (3:46 pm)

I agree, anon. Dora, I really, truly, honestly, and sincerely hope that you never find out what it’s like firsthand.

“He will be out in a week and live rent free under some kind of tax paid program…god bless America! -Paul”
Paul, you’re not the victim here… try to keep the paranoid ravings to a minimum.

  • Aqui no July 2, 2011 (6:30 pm)

    Dora,
You just made me a “victim” of your ignorance. On top of being a victim of Mr Siegel and his wife. Argh. Now I have to pay for his trial and her medical coupons/food stamps/section 8.
Why me? ME! ME! ME! (sarcasm here)

Sorry, comment time is over.
