Casting a wider net for adult pickup soccer game in West Seattle

Out of the WSB inbox, from Scott Jones:

Myself and a group of old soccer players have been trying to get an adult/big kid (high-school age and above) soccer pickup game going every Sunday 10:30 am at Fairmount Park (just past the old Huling Bros on Fauntleroy Way). We were at Hiawatha until their fall leagues started and we could not get on the field. We have been working with the West Seattle Soccer Club (many of us coach our kids in their league) and we are just trying to get the word out to more West Seattle folks. Men and women of all skill levels, level of fitness, ages are welcome! It would be great to get a pool of about 50 players with 20 or so showing up every Sunday to have some good pickup games going. Most of us have busy lives and can’t commit to joining a full team for a full season, but we love to kick the ball around when we can with like-minded folks looking for some fun and exercise.

Interested? Just show up. Here’s a map.

Drove by Fairmount today – turf looked chewed up and muddy from all the youth teams use. Should be a bog by Sunday morning after the big incoming rain storm tonight. Any chance of meeting earlier (8:30?) at Hiawatha before the league games start?

What about Alki field or another field? Fairmont park has a bit of a sideways slope and a big dip in the center – no joke. I stumbled in it just walking across the field while coaching.

I’d be interested in participating. One question, is the intention for this to continue year-round or just for certain seasons? Since I also enjoy watching football, there will be some Sundays I’ll be preoccupied!

You might try setting up something at meetup.com. They have several pickup soccer game meets listed but none for West Seattle. I can’t make it this Sunday but will definitely be interested in the future.

Thanks all for the comments! Yes we are trying to keep this going year round, although I realize this is a tough time of year to keep this going! Some of the “hard-core” are willing to try to keep this going through the winter. Hiawatha worked out great before the leagues started–we have tried to find a schedule to see when the field is open, but have not had luck with finding a master schedule. When we started this, most of the group wanted to have it start at 10:30 so they could have some sleep in/church time if possible–that’s why we did not start earlier, though that is an option. We chose Fairmont park because that was one of the fields we knew were open and had several smaller fields, so we could start with some 8v8 games and when the numbers grew we could start another game on the neighboring field or move to a full field at that time. I realize all natural grass fields will be starting to get tore up this time of year, but it seems difficult to find the time and space we could have guaranteed every week to play–maybe when Delridge field is complete? Thanks again for you comments and I hope you pass the word!

Sounds great, I’ll try and make it to Fairmount Park this Sunday at 10:30. Is there an email list or other way to stay notified about location/time changes?

Sorry, comment time is over.
